This is an interview with Billy Corgan that ran on RTE just prior to the showing of the concert in Dublin's Olympia Theatre on May 31st, 1998. The interview is carried out by Tom Dunne. View the concert here - • Smashing Pumpkins - L...
Now here's a little tidbit for you that you probably didn't know back in the 1950s there was a magnetic toy game that allowed you to pull metal shavings from the bottom of a card that you could then manipulate with your magnetic pencil and manipulate these shards of metal on to a face that was actually Billy corgan's great-grandfather and you really could put some hairdos on Bartholomew Corrigan!
Really is a great album. Sort of my introduction to the Pumpkins, although I may have heard and liked Today before that... knew very little about them until my sister brought home the Adore album. Not too long after I got into Mellon Collie (etc)... and just recently bought their Siamese Dream CD. Working my way back, but instead of Gish, I might go forward... anxious to get to some newer stuff. (I do know and like some Gish from Rotten Apples... had a burned copy of that too as teenager.) OK I'm done, bye! lol
Certainly. I've always liked Corgan but never really listened to him in interviews until the last couple of years. He's so articulate and I love how thoughtful and considerate he is in his delivery of his thoughts. Good thing he was chatty here as you mentioned. Thanks for uploading this btw and your response.
I remember this interview- very well done and researched. I remember wondering where Dave Fanning was at the time, seeing he normally interviewed Billy, or anybody when they were in town. Adore's lush, laid back melancholia and electronica didnt initially connect with me at time, even though of course Mellon Collie had lots of touches of it beforehand. But years later, Adore really connected with me. I love when that happens with albums, taking time to reach you like that. I was at the Dublin gig in 96 that is brought up at the end here. Tom's approach is meaningful and totally sound and respectful, with Billy's hindsights and reflections being deep and thoughtful.
Philology of the word 'whore' comes from 'worship' so i wouldn't think it as being profane especially in the context of a love song like Ava Adore, like the 'going it alone' motif of production, very respective of the album central eulogy theme, and love seein Billy rap with Irish, ask very Billy friendly questions, good man Paddy Corgan
@@godfreyulex1203I assume Billy mentioned losing his mother in this interview and he wrote this cited lyric on the charity based album Adore song Tear which he was presumably touring at this time; most though not all lyrics on this album were with respect of this massive life changing event ☺️🫒💕 yo momma 😭😶🌅
I think the difference between Billy Corgan and somebody like Courtney Love is that if Billy Corgan is having a down kind of day you'll know it if Courtney Love is having a down kind of day you will really know it
No they didn't. Jimmy came back and he scrapped the "new" smashing pumpkins, so it would just be Billy, Jimmy, Darcy, and James. They toured shortly in 1999 for the "Arising" tour and then Darcy left.
@@tparker2095 "darcy left" isn't accurate. "After the KISS shows in LA, Billy and James came over to my apartment and told me they would give me three months off. I was in LA trying to do some movie stuff, but the Mickey Rourke movie never panned out. I tried to get a hold of Melissa for that, they wanted her, and I was like, ‘Okay, I’ll give her a call.’. She wouldn’t answer my call, and this was right after Billy and James had told me they were giving me three months off. Billy had already spoken to Melissa, because there was no reason she wouldn’t call me back. When Billy found out I was working towards doing a movie, he was furious, and had someone call me. They said, ‘Billy thinks that if you’re well enough to do a movie, you should be well enough to be in the studio. So you have to come back.’ I said, ‘Tell Billy to call me himself then.’ Billy would never call me himself; he would always have somebody else call me....
The shift in direction that the smashing pumpkins took for Adore has to rank among the most spectacular failures in rock history. They took a wrong turn, and never made it back.
