Billy Corgan inducts Pink Floyd into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame during the 1996 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, and members of Pink Floyd -- David Gilmour, Richard Wright and Nick Mason -- accept Hall of Fame awards.
'It surprises me that we don't look for more Pink Floyds and less what's at the top of the charts at this particular moment.' A sentiment still true 20 years on.
Strange that he mentions his Grandmother, when my Grandmother died I listened to "Today" over and over again. Really got me through it all. I can only hope if my band gets pretty far I could do the same.
My aunt once told me that her mother (aka my grandma) once found some journal entry where she'd written lyrics from that song, and was like, "wow, today is the greatest day you've ever known???" Or something like that, and my first thought was to ask if she put in the line about "I'll burn my eyes out" lol. Both my maternal grandparents passed within two months of each other back in 2013.
I never knew Billy introduced Pink Floyd into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This is such a beautiful intro. Pink Floyd is my fave band of all time, especially David Gilmour. I just love WPC's intro and love seeing him play with them as well. Well done sir!
You can tell Billy is not out there because he signed an agreement to do it , or because he owes some record exec a favor.. you can tell he is a huge fan and PF’s music moves him and speaks to him. That’s why i love both these bands. They put out music they want to listen to themselves and not just some conglomeration of tones, beats & lyrics the pollsters tell them will play well on Spotify.
@zefdin101 it's an insane honor to induct a band of that caliber, I'd think. The only reason I can think of to turn it down is out of fear that I wouldn't be able to do the occasion justice.
Pink Floyd has had such an influence in music, even in today's releases from different cultures and society. Their music is timeless and that is what makes them the great band they are. They say that the greatest music stands there's of time. Funny the song Time is in itself is that standard
Personally, I would say that is their best singles album (Zero) from the Mellon Collie Era. Marquis in Spades, Mouths of Babes, Pennies, Tribute to Johnny and the infamous Pastacio Medley. The second half of the latter song was used numerous times to drive my roommates nuts.
Didnt catch either. Very nice observational skills. It's really very clever & oppertunistic is what it is & kind of exemplifies Billy Corgan & his carreer in some ways. Like I said, that's clever & oppertunistic of him but is the induction into the Hall of Fame of one of the truly legendary bands in rock music history the time & place to plug your current project. 'your' being the key word there. This isn't about you. It's about Pink Floyd. I thought alot of his attempts at humor fell flat, literally, because of the smug way he'd float them out there & when he didn't get the audience response he was hoping for he would he compensates by adding his own little kind of laugh/condescending snicker that didn't come off well. Don't get me wrong. 8 love alot of the Pumpkins' music up to Melancholy/ Sadness & I was one of the only people that bought Gish when it came out. He's talanted. I get that. He's media saavy. The dude grew up in the 2nd biggest market , Chicago, in the country. I get that but sometimes he can be a bit too clever & oppertunistic for his own good
Objection!!! Having watched nearly all the Rock and Roll hall of fame induction shows, this one doesnt stand out a bit. Such a Pity. Pink Floyd is one of the greatest bands of all time and what I have just watched is like a casual low-key night that only a few people took notice of. They should be inducted again.
Tool is the closest to pink than anything plus as of now the best band on the planet... and hopefully soon they will get there’s and nobody can come close to what they do. Danny, Justin,Adam,Paul & MJK are rock gods of gen x.
@Terrence Reardon and Friends Podcast Podcast The Smashing Pumpkins' music is mostly about positivity and moving on from things, not whining about them. Not that you would know lmao dunce
@Terrence Reardon and Friends Podcast Podcast D'arcy, James, and Jimmy sang on songs. Some of them even have their own songs sung on the albums. You clearly don't know that and go on to write a bunch of common knowledge. I feel bad for people like you that dismiss the bands you mentioned. It's ok to like more than one genre or era of music. I agree with everything else you said but you didn't really take a stance that was brave or unique, everyone knows all this. One thing I don't understand is how Zeppelin got away with ripping off so many other songs note for note and are never judged by it even if they did it 'better'.
maybe unpopular statement but fuck ....minimum... for fucks sake thank the person who has just beautifully introduced you in all your pomp and ceremony no matter who or great you are... I love Pink Floyd but etiquette deserted them in their finest moment... God Bless Billy Corgan !!!! x
Meravigliosi. IMMENSI PINK FLOYD.
Not surprised at all Roger blew this off. I'ts just so Roger. It was probably 50% him not getting on with David and 50% being pissed off at corporate America and the greed of the music industry as a whole. Just making an educated guess....
Why? What if a casual fan got more of a connection with them that made a positive change in their life because of them? A super fan might not have that.
He may seem casual on the surface. But Billy doesn’t really do anything half assed. You can tell he was more than a casual fan by listening to early Pumpkins. They were very psychedelic. A direct influence of Floyd. So he may have been late to the game because of his age , but I’m sure Billy’s appreciation of Pink Floyd is fairly deep and sincere. Was he the best choice for the induction speech? That’s definitely debatable. But I believe he did fine. And I believe he was sincere. In the end, that’s all that really matters.
when you see the fuss that gets made over bands going into the HOF these days...this is a crime. These guys are genuinely great musicians for a start (which puts them above 99% of today's artists). Some of the greatests songs ever and their induction is about 1 1/2 minutes....? Billy did a great job though
@@shailendraahangama194 adore is my fav and is very mellow with electronic elements, mellon collie is their biggest variety on a single album, the new album cyr has a lot of 80s/synth to it, gish is just a heavy psych guitar record and siamese dream is a hell of a rock/shoegaze vibe where they really came into their own.
@@shailendraahangama194 of course yaar! if you want random songs all with different sounds: siva, daydream, crush, disarm, cherub rock, soma, landslide, thirty three, xyu, my blue heaven, tonight tonight, eye, to sheila, crying tree of mercury, I of the Mourning, Dross, Bring the Light, Zeitgest (the song), Song for a Sun, Tiberius, Oceania (song), The Celestials, Knights of Malta, Telegenix, Colour of Your Love, Save your Tears. Damn, I dunno why I started capitalizing it halfway through but Im too high to change it lol. Enjoy!
for years and years they did no nterviews, press,no nothing, they were a complete mystery, all you could do was examne the album covers ,they were a complete anomaly.....boy did that change
I wish that they chose someone other than Billy Corgan to induct them into the Hall...he doesn't come across as sincere and his comments just seem to be regurgitating bits and pieces from various articles that have been written about the band in the past.
This comment will age poorly. Clearly you don't know much about Billy when it comes to PF's music. He's done countless covers of PF and talks about them all the time.
I did never understand the choice of the people to talk about the band. Should be presented by old musicians that lived those moments in the begging...the choice was not happy. And the other guy did not has funny at all..and what about the Foo Figthers Drummer? Seriously?
@@andrewpappas9311 Possibly, but way too short-sighted on his part. Even with Disco - which I don't have an issue with - there was tons, tons, tons of great music in the 70s. .
@@Brooklyn3955 Yeah, plus a lot of great bands that got their start or got big during the 70s like AC/DC, Queen, Floyd, Bowie, Sabbath, Van Halen and not to mention the whole punk scene kicking off
Of all people billy corgan? a total has been that never was, this was the moment the rock and roll all of fame became totally meaningless. Pink Floyd did not need this joke of an award., their music has and will continue to stand the test of time
Could Corgan sound any more disinterested? What a terrible induction speech. For anyone wanting to see how it should have been done for The Floyd, check out Dave Grohl's speech inducting Rush. It was heartfelt, emotional and a perfect recap of why they were being inducted. Corgan's speech is pure shit.
hes just an awkward guy :/ but he has always been a huge fan of pink floyd, alot of influence can be heard on smashing pumpkins debut album, hes got alot of love for the band
lol billy isn’t the get on his knees and such off an artist dick for praise . he’s honest and true whenever he’s recorded, he’s not a type to show fake emotion. knowing dave he’s definitely a put a fake smile on for the cameras, billy’s not that
