What I like about checking interviews with Alternative/Grunge acts that survived, that they are finally mature enough to talk about what other generations acts talked for years, it isn't "against this and that" anymore, Corgan is joining the rite of passage of every famous Rock band that goes beyond success and failure, you hear EXACTLY the same point of views of interviews like rockers like Bon Jovi , Aerosmith, even Tommy Lee. Can truly say that The Smashing Pumpkins have and have always had such a unique and true to them style. Never tried to please people, just created the art that they desired. Have continued to do so until this very day. When Billy was a young pup, he was arrogant, defensive and full of ego. That has matured into one of the most flavourful fine wines ive seen. Now he can look back and laugh and put the ego aside, but he still has that intensely analytical and self assured way of thinking, so hearing him reflect on the art making process is phenomenal. Hes linked to every single great artist i listen to, he's weaved into history and im glad hes alive to talk about it all.

I don't know that that's true because he has competitive streak clearly from this and he basically made a pumpkins theatrical version of ok computer himself, and that is selling out in that way, but he seems at peace with that which is honest. Whether Cobain could have turned corners and been at peace with his art in way Lennon was, and maybe even progressing further, is the thing with artists. Cobain may have been scared he didnt know how Lennon or Hendrix would have evolved, but maybe he saw himself as better than R.E.M,/the pixies, or not as good and it messed him up. Corgan is arguably more mundane, but Cornell and Cobain being consumed, if Corgan is flipside, he's at least refreshing in that distinction, because both are insecure in their way,, but to still use that insecurity as fuel if able to bare is life. Universe was trying to kill Corgan more than Cobain seems like, so Corgain wanted to be his own expression, vs being the universe's expression. Selling out is artistically valid when it is, because there's external levels of insatiability that won't be able to distinguish that, other then in moment time.

I was at the Pumpkins show in Biloxi MS on April 8 1994, the day they found Kurt's body. Red Red Meat opened for them, IIRC - we had driven from New Orleans to see the show and were listening to mixtapes for the whole trip - we heard the news about Kurt while we walking into the show. Billy was especially emotional and combative - his I Am One rant still rings in my ears after all these years. "For 27 years I have lived with pain in my heart...." before going headlong into a rant calling a out random fan in the front... D'Arcy doesn't want you dumbf*** pissant.... Emotional show, but one of the most memorable I have ever been to.

I've always found Billy Corgan to be a breath of fresh air in interviews. I know some people find him to be arrogant or whatever, but he's always come across as open and honest when it comes to his art and experiences. Also, talk about someone who deserves to have an ego, given all his accomplishments. I will say there are times where I feel like he has been overly critical about his work, but that's something all great artists do. I remember when he brought the Pumpkins back with Zeitgeist and the heaviness that blasted through the speakers. Each Pumpkins record living independently of one another yet fitting seamlessly into a Monumental discography. I need to listen to the full ATUM a few more times but I think it's great. CYR is probably one of, if not my favorite records by Smashing Pumpkins which is quite a feat compared to what any fans call their classic, early albums.

I love how humble he was about Kurt Cobain and the fact of how much talent he had and it's like winning a game on technicality he wanted. Cobain to live and continue to make great music. So he himself could try to be competitive with that said music. Just like he said if you want to be the best you have to beat the best very good interview sorry for the long comments

The amount of times I had to pause the video and look up a band or artist for reference during this interview is crazy.

Growing up and coming from DeKalb Illinois, Billy’s stories about MJ are just the fucking best. God bless William Patrick Corgan.

A very refreshing well thought out and intelligent perspective. Genus icons such as Billy should not concern themselves with the obviously jealous rantings of an insignificant bearded man from Brooklyn. Can't wait to see the show at Jones Beach this Wednesday. Bringing the whole family! We are super excited!

Billy seems more laid back as he gets older. The more casual yet nuanced dialog is very refreshing.

I never thought Hum sounded like the Smashing Pumpkins, but now that's it been mentioned I can see the similarities. I still think Hum has their own thing going that distinguishes them. Their new album is really good

Agreed. I love the living heck out of Hum and smashing pumpkins but I don’t hear the similarities at all.

When Billy drops the ego, he is actually a super charming guy. The catalogue is hit-and-miss, but no denying the gems this man and his various cohorts have given us over the years, and the dedication to his craft. Nothing but respect that he is still at it after making it through all the tumult of his generation.
