I am half Korean and was never taught to speak Korean. I have been trying to find videos to help myself and my kids learn Korean to make my mom happy and maybe talk to my Korean relatives one day. These are by far the best videos. You explain really well and enunciate every sound. Thank you so much for sharing this with the public!
@@fabiolamachuca I think hes a foreigner, but I think people in general that learnt a language later on in life (not as a child) would be better at teaching the language because they studied it from a deeper prespective than some child. So the adult learner can say something other than "that's how it works"
I started learning on Duolingo before trying your online lessons, and whilst it was great to learn 한글 - when it came to learning full words it was more difficult. For example 닭 - "Chicken" - always threw me, because of the silent 'ㄹ' which was never explained and I now learned why that is! A perfect example of why one should listen when you say not to skip content!

I teach English in South Korea and have tried to learn Korean on Duolingo on and off for three years. These videos are far more helpful than any app I've used. I learned Hangul in like five minutes with a chart that showed the Korean letters compared to pictures they look like in English. Like 비 is like a bucket, 미 is like an mouth, 하 is like a man wearing a hat, 시 is like a ski slope or slide, and 에 and 애 is like an open gatE and closed gAtE. And the pre-vowel consonant was a goose egg, as in "NothinG," but also the egg before the baby (which are the vowels.)

I tried learning on Duolingo before and it just didn't work out. It was hard to understand how to properly say it with all of the romanization. And they never explain rules for anything so it just left me confused. Thank you for making this series, it has really helped me so far and I hope that maybe one day I can be able to have conversations in Korean thanks to you 😊

This helped me so much! I would always watch videos on Korean and do language apps but none of them taught me stroke order, syllable blocks, or how to blend syllables. This series is just what I needed. Thank you 🙏
Is it normal that I still can’t read fast enough? Or should I stay practicing Hangul? It’s not like I can’t read, but I’m rlly slow idk if I should continue even though I already memorized the alphabet :((
It takes a lot of practice and reading to become faster. It took me a few months to read at a decent pace. When I first learned Hangul I had to read it one syllable at a time so don't worry, it comes with learning new languages.
Knowing the alphabet doesn't equal fast reading. Just take your time and you'll get it eventually. That's the case for all kinds of learning. It's hard to emphasise how learning is all about time and patience and not just "I read this so I learnt this". Think of it like this, you can most likely read English at a decent pace since you've gotten used to seeing the characters, same goes for Korean. Read it enough and you'll get used to it, nothing strange going on here :D

Good morning, Billy! I re-watched this video today, and what I got is as the syllable 삶 didn't have any syllable next to it or anything else we just don't pronounce the ㄹ. Am I right?

I always hesitate to go onto the next lesson because my reading of the words are sub-par and I feel like I am falling into training habits of repeating the same syllables over and over. Thanks!!
You can move on as long as you feel okay with the material. With the alphabet though, you'll never *master* it until you've already started learning the language. Feel free to move on as long as you can recognize the letters and write them :)
So did he mention that we're reading the bottom consonants from right to left or that we read Korean from right to left? I've been reading all the visuals and he's also been pronouncing the syllables from left to right until now.

I just finished this class and I have a question regardless the last examples, you said, "When a syllable has two consonants at the bottom, and one of them is ㄹ, and the next syllable doesn't start with ㅇ, then the consonant ㄹ will USUALLY not be pronounced" However, you put some examples without any syllable next to them, for example, you just put "삶" without any syllable next to it, so in this case, how will I know if I should pronounce the "ㄹ" or not? I'm going to give you an example, if I have "핣시" I don't know if this is right, but for what you taught the ㄹ shouldn't be pronounced, right? But what if it is just written "핣" alone, should I pronounce the ㄹ?

There is something that I find unclear in this lesson though: for the rule about blending syllables, and specifically about the example '영어', does the 3rd letter (ㅇ) in the first syllable still get pronounced within the first syllable, or is pronounced within the second?

In your last part, you mentioned about ㄹ rule, where at word such as 삶 , the ㄹ was silence. but what if ㄹ is at the end of bottom consonant? Does it still silence? Or those type does not exist?

I first off what to say thank you for taking the time to explain all of this. But I do have a question, is there a reason why we can't use romanization just for the simple parts to get the correct pronunciation. For just the first part of the videos, I have got to make some type of note for myself to make sure I am understanding and that way I will know what I'm saying . If that makes any sense at all. If you don't answer it can someone please help me, I'm a very visual learner and it helps if I have something for me to study other than just having the letters. I'm sorry if this is a long message but I really need to understand what I'm doing so i can make good practice.
It's not going to hurt to use romanization in the very beginning - before any words. It's just important to not rely on it, so I would definitely not be writing any words/sentences with romanization. In the very beginning, things like "ㅁ is kind of like an M" is pretty helpful just to get an idea of where to start. But it's important to remember to keep it loose, and not write something like "ㅁ = M" and focus on that sort of thing, because that will cause you a lot of problems down the road.
Hi there! I’m a bit confused I hope I didn’t miss something because I think I got the rules but when you pronounce 삶 you skip the ㄹ indeed and we hear the ㅁ but in 흙, 읽, 밟 and 닭 you skip ㄹ but don’t pronounce ㄱ and ㅂ as well can you tell us why?
This question should be explained in this video on the slide "How to Read ㄹ." It's "most of the time." However I didn't skip ㄱ in 닭 - I do say "닥." It might be also your ears playing tricks on you, because these sounds don't match with any English sounds you may be used to.

You don't need to learn any of these "words," as they're just being used here for practicing the alphabet. Any important words I'll be sure to mention as the lessons progress :)
Hello Billy. Thank you for the video. Could you please clarify one thing about ㄹ for me? You say that when a syllable has two consonants at the bottom, and when one of them is ㄹ, and when the following syllable does not start with ㅇ, then most of the time ㄹ is not pronounced. That being said, why do your examples of 읽 and 옮겨 omit the ㄹ? Or are these exceptions to the rule, a.k.a. not "most of the time"? Thanks!
I think you may be mixing one rule with another. The rule about when to pronounce ㄹ or not is when it's at the end of a syllable on its own (for example when trying to read words like 여덟 or 흙), not when the syllable is followed by another syllable (thus allowing it to be read normally in many cases).
@@GoBillyKorean Thanks for the reply, Billy. After rewatching this part of the video several times, and after speaking to another learner of the language, I had it clarified to me. I thought you were referencing the same syllable and saying that the syllable needs ㄹ as one of the two consonants on the bottom AND this particular syllable cannot begin with ㅇ. I wasn't reading "following syllable" as "proceeding syllable". Therefore it makes sense why you would read 읽겨 as 익겨 because the FOLLOWING syllable is 겨 and thus does not begin with ㅇ. I need to pick a better time to study than at 4 in the morning. :-p

In the 3rd example word, there is the use of the silent letter "o" at the start of the syllable then how come the letter "ㄹ" becomes silent in the syllable slient@GoBillyKorean
@@revatijagdale761 I recommend re-watching the part around that, which explains where that happens. I mention words that have two consonants at the bottom when one of the letters is ㄹ , so 읽 has ㄺ which applies to this case.
Probably I'm the one messing up things for nothing, but I want to be sure of one thing: in this video when Billy says a syllable with 3 letters in the "literal" way, he barely pronounces the last consonant, but in the previous videos I can hear the last consonant in every example it was made. I understood the flowing through concept, but this difference still baffles me. Is the third letter of a syllable meant to be silent as it is without a vowel after? Or was it a way to enhance the difference between the literal and the spoken way? I really hope my question is clear otherwise please tell me and I'll try to improve my mental chaos... (Also this is posted before ending the video so I might add some new question later)
That's because these sounds aren't the same as in English, so your brain is expecting a harder sound (in English) than there actually is. I'm not saying the last letter any softer than it's supposed to be, but it is not going to sound the same as any of the English letters since none of the 한글 will match with English letters perfectly.
Hello Billy! I am confused in this! You haven't told about when one of the last consonants in the l/r letter and the following syllable does start with o, then what to do?? Ppls clarify, my head's aching right now! :(
Yes, that was taught along with the sound change rules. ㅇ is the empty consonant at the start of a syllable, so anything before that would just flow through.

It just takes time and practice :) And even if you learned all of the letters, it can take a very long time to read quickly, so don't stress about it. As long as you're able to slowly start reading, it's enough to continue,

It's just your ears tricking you. These sounds aren't in English (or in other languages), so your ears are just guessing what they sound like to you, which can change depending on how loud they are, etc. It just takes time and practice, but you'll get used to it :)

Yes i see when it is not pronounced, but you said ㅇ Needs to follow the ㄹfor it to be pronounced. and in this example for it ㄹ to be pronounced: 여덟 , i do not see an ㅇ anywhere in this syllable? Hey billi some at last part is so confusing .. Becz when o comes at the start you didnt pronounced the l or r sound... And some place you pronouncinh r to l and k to g it also confusing eng : saramee snd salmee
The reason is you're still getting adjusted to these sounds. It's important to avoid equating any of these sounds to English (or any other language), since they won't match up. Your ears will trick you into thinking these sounds are something else. In the first example of 한국민 and 한구긴 you pronounced 구 as gu but ㄱ this is pronounced as 'kh' as far I have watched the videos... please tell me it's kh or g...🤔
It's neither of those, since it can't be written accurately in English. The reason is the sound is softer than what you're expecting in English, so your ears can mishear it as different sounds. The same thing happened to me when I was first learning the alphabet. Just give it some time and practice and you'll be able to hear the sounds better.

@@imjopping It's when the *next* syllable starts with ㅇ - that's due to the part where I explain how to read sounds through the letter ㅇ. For example, 흙 is "흑" but 흙이 is "흘기."
Reading syllables must be a joke. 🙈 I think I know how to pronounce it and then you sound totally different. 😄 Audio lessons are essential. Read, hear, repeat.
It takes a long time to get good at reading the alphabet. Don't let anyone tell you they mastered it in a few days ;-) You can definitely learn all of the letters in just a few hours though!
In the last part where there is 흙 and the next syllable is 읽, why had we discarded ㄹwhen the next syllable already hadㅇ in it, same thing with second last word 닭 as it's also followed by 예덟, please answer my head is aching thinking about this one😂
