Take the time to stroll through his album credits, any of his albums. He personally has written every song, every lyric. Every one. How does one person have this much talent? I heard him interviewed and he said there is a song running through his brain all day, every day. If Captain Jack doesn't prove his brilliance, just listen to "She's Always a Woman" and "She's Got a Way". I mean, what the F? I fell in love with his music the first time I heard his album The Stranger, maybe in middle school. Give 'You're My Home" a listen. Best Live Album - "Songs In The Attic". Wowser.
One of three great regrets in my life is that I didn't apply myself to learn to play the piano. Damn, that. Anyway, at least Billy and you, Dixie, can.
He had a high level of piano, but did not particularly flaunt it, he always designed his piano playing to serve the song, more than to be admired for his playing.
i mean the fact that it’s fast and singing while pushing the mic to a better position though nowadays some keyboards can have the right set of keys do a different sound
Had the honor as a 22 year of promoting this concert at Conecticut College in New London. He was an innovator and prodigy and still is. Never be another like him.
Great song, poignant lyrics. I was honestly never much of a Billy Joel fan, but this particular song has always resonated with me, mostly because I have lived out most of the lyrics, but also because of the passion in his singing. Even if you can’t personally relate to the lyrics, everybody knows someone like the protagonist in the song. I know plenty of others who this song has really struck a chord with. It’s a powerful tune.
What a great talent! Playing the synth without looking and moving the Mic with his chin. So much energy and still focused on his singing. Just an amazing artist!
My dads turning 65 this year and I still remember him taking my brothers and sister and mother to a concert of his…still remember and still listen…so do my sons…I was still in grade school…it was awesome…still is…
A very youthful Billy Joel, who had already lived enough at this point for two lifetimes. A singer-songwriter-musician-performer-perfectionist throwing all caution to the wind as he shows the local crowd that it’s still rock n roll to him. I believe this was just on the heels of his underrated masterpiece perfect collection of classics and standards, “Turnstiles”. And forgive this tangent but am I the only one disappointed in MLB not taking advantage of the All Star activities, last year, 2017 in Miami, Florida with “Miami 2017”? I wish someone can ask Billy on his reaction to the 2017 All Star Game being held in Miami. 🌟
Yes, Miami 2017, awesome song!!🎶🎵🌆. But, just saying, isn't there a bit of disrespect to Miami in there? The song is more of a rallying cry to support NYC through hard times; Miami is where they go when they give up the fight. Just saying ...
How they made the "So you decide to take a, holiday..." verse groove so much. Real chemistry of the jazz and blues licks side by side. After listening to the album version for years, this gave the song new meaning.
Yeah every version is so different. The "Songs in the Attic" version is considered his best live one, but there's no video that I can find. Trying to figure out how to play and sing this one myself and it isn't easy.
This is an amazing song and amazing performance. As people said- the microphone-moving chin, the synth, plus Billy jumping up and down in his seat during the verse makes this man legit a talent, and a master. I'd say up there with Keith Richards and Jimi Hendrix.
The POWER and urban ANGST in this song is simply and utterly incredible! One of my FAVORITE songs. Not one of my favorite Billy Joel songs - one of my FAVORITE songs, period! The version on Songs in the Attic is MAGICAL!
man this is a fabulous recording of a fabulous performance. i say this as a dedicated hard rock, doom, hardcore punk guy, i love this song, and Billy Joel is flat out a killer musician .
I'm Japanese and I first heard this song when I was 12 years old. At the time, I thought it was cool to see American young people living a lazy lifestyle. When I listen to this song now, at age 52, I realize it's an ironic lament about suburban life.
I really enjoy the way he plows into it and then without looking does that side xylophone extravaganza. That is so delicious and satisfying, and the edgy lyrics, the risque, mahvilis.
Agreed, he plays that awesome synth part at the end without a glance, on a machine that looks like it was part of NASA’s ground control for the moon landing.
He's so great. The band is too. Keeping up with Billy and those fast fingers of his. What a gift he has. We are all so blessed to have great musicians.
@@davidboyle1193are you serious?? This song is fine but so dragged out. No melodic or harmonic variation. “None of his other work lives up to this” seriously? Ever heard of Summer Highland Falls? Basically all of the Stranger?? Glass Houses?
As a drummer myself, I infinitely appreciate guys like Liberty, playing with so much power and gusto. That's the only way it ought to be for rock drumming.
Damn if this doesn't take you back ..I don't know what will. Yester myself and my sweet hubby was in our new van with a perfect radio and the song ce on "Captain Jack" , Back when the song was out I worked at a establishment with a piano..don't ya know our elderly piano man play that song with so many others. Yesterday certainly moved me to some tears.
@isimensministry 0 seconds ago I had the privilege of blowing my last 5k promoting this concert at Connecticut College's Palmer Auditorium in December 1976. Still remains a highlight of my life. Greatness was all over the board and a few months later The Stranger came out with Just the Way You Are. There will never be another like him.
It was around this time I went to Billy Joel's concert at Dallas Brooke's here in Melbourne 35 years ago. 35 years and yes 5 hrs - Yes 5 hrs of pure magic - Captain Jack got everyone high that night for sure. Billy and Liberty DeVito - brilliance!
@Billy Joel🎼🎼 I know someone who performed with Billy and is still a close friend. I know for a fact you're not Billy. You could get reported to You Tube for impersonating him... so you should stop. You are embarrassing yourself too. Billy would never ask for a person's location anyway. You're obviously a troll just trying to get information out of people.
saw him live in Denver at Coors Field in 2019. It was nothing short of amazing. I'd never been to a concert where the entire audience in attendance sang every song word for word. Time well spent with my son and it means more now because we will never have a time like that together again. Nessun Dorma almost brought the stadium down.
I get my weed from a dispensary that's named after this song. Lol I love it. Mind you, it was my favorite Billy Joel song for a good 10 years before I ever tried weed.
Lmao that's a weird thing to name a cannabis dispensary... It's about shooting heroin. Kinda gives a bad name/image to bud, but there's no comparison at all haha. Favorite strain?
@@scottmatznick3140 True, but it's all in good fun. I doubt many people think of the sadness of the song when they see the name. I'm quite fond of pineapple express, btw. Gets me dancing.
My dealer calls themself captain jack & wears a red leather jacket, acid wash blue jeans, vintage graphic tees, mirrored aviators and a greek fisherman cap over their long hair. I tell you this because thats me. I grow my own. I'm the captain of the SS Sedan DeVille and i'll get you bi tonight bby
@@scottmatznick3140 Actually, its about sitting around in your parents shag-carpet-and-wood-paneling-with-a-bar-finished basement and pissing away your youth playing folk records on the hi-fi while baked out of your gourd. The high of doing so beats the shit out of that opioid bullshit anyways.
Powerful song describing growing up on Long Island...Many of his songs had to do with Levittown and Hicksville in Nassau County....he came from nothing and made himself into something...top shelf live performer.....
