John Lennon originally wrote "Whatever gets you thru the night" to the tune or groove of the song "Rock Your Baby" by George McCrea. You can listen to one of the studio takes on his Anthology cd box set.

True story. Harry Wayne "K.C." Casey of K.C. and the Sunshine Band co-wrote "Rock Your Baby." He tells he story of the song's connection with Lennon while introducing the song in their shows.

I think I prefer to not see how the sausage is made... I wanted to think of Honesty as a grief-induced, philosophical song that had to be written, as opposed to rhyming with s0domy
