Lyrics:
A bottle of white, a bottle of red
Perhaps a bottle of rose instead
We'll get a table near the street
In our old familiar place
You and I-face to face
A bottle of red, a bottle of white
It all depends on your appetite
I'll meet you any time you want
In our Italian Restaurant.
Billy Joel's official RU-vid channel features music videos, live performances, interviews, TV appearances and more. I love the fact that when Billy Joel was asked why he didn't make more albums -- because he totally can -- he said that he feels that he's had his say, and I felt that. It's like we go through life and make our mark, say what we're born to say, and then go, and if we're lucky, be remembered. And Billy Joel will definitely be remembered.

Especially good for Joel because he got out right as the alternative scene was starting up and if he kept going he would've joined his other 80s contemporaries in Todd In The Shadows' "nirvana killed me career" category

Absolutely same, it did help that my neighbor kind of got me into the older stuff, including this song. imo any song pre 2000 era just had so much more soul to it. There are still some good ones, but I found my place living in the 70’s-80’s in 2023 😅

One of Billy's best. Also, very McCartney-esque with all the changes of melody within the song. Always loved this work, and Billy said it's his favorite!
@duffman18
@duffman18 2 года назад
Yeah it sounds like a McCartney song, like something off of Ram perhaps. His singing voice even sounds like Maccas in this. I wonder if that's exactly what he was going for. Like he'd been listening to a lot of McCartney's solo stuff, and his stuff with Wings, and got inspired. I wonder if McCartney has ever covered this
@michaelulbricht9438
@michaelulbricht9438 2 года назад
I cannot find any evidence that McCartney has ever sung this, however, it was inspired by the 16 minute suite from Abbey Road which is primarily Paul's musical idea. "Like most of Joel's songs, he composed the music first, which in this case was inspired by The Beatles, specifically the suite of songs on their Abbey Road album where a few unfinished tunes were put together to create one coherent piece." Take care!

Went to my 40 year high school reunion about three weeks ago. Laughing, grinning, smiling, hugging, looking at the senior yearbook and cringing at the senior photo----oh yeah, Billy Joel captured the passage of youth, immaturity, hopes, dreams, middle-age ruefulness perfectly in a seven-minute ode.
@raygutoski5765

This is a quote from Wikipedia "Joel attended Hicksville High School until 1967, but did not graduate with his class.[14] He was playing at a piano bar to help support himself, his mother and sister, and missed a crucial English exam after playing a late-night gig at a piano bar the evening before.[14] Although Joel was a comparatively strong student, at the end of his senior year he did not have enough credits to graduate. Rather than attend summer school to earn his diploma, Joel decided to begin a career in music: "I told them, 'To hell with it. If I'm not going to Columbia University, I'm going to Columbia Records, and you don't need a high school diploma over there'."[28] In 1992, he submitted essays to the school board in lieu of the missed exam. They were accepted, and he was awarded his diploma at Hicksville High's annual graduation ceremony 25 years after leaving.[29

I went to my first proper bar last night, and it was a piano bar. These two guys were taking recommendations, so of course I had to put down Scenes. Well after some great songs, they start playing it, and mom and I nail every single word just like we do in the car! Then one of the piano guys, taking a break at the bar, said to my mom, "I'm so glad she knows all the words to this song. It warms my heart." Last night, singing songs and having a drink, was the happiest I have been in a long time. I'm glad this music is in my life!

Gosh this song is sooooo good. This style/era of rock in the 70s is probably my favorite. Its basically 3 incomplete songs strung together to make one long masterpiece. That style is also seen with songs like Jungleland, Band on the Run, Day in the Life, Bohemian Rhapsody, Funeral for a Friend, etc.

"That's all I know about Brenda (Brender-LOL!) & Eddie, can't tell you more, cause I told you already!" Much like "Captain Jack", this song is a snapshot of suburban life in our country, set during a particular time & set in a certain place. Brenda & Eddie are people we once knew, or do know, or, maybe we once were. Billy Joel created a musical masterpiece with his very American take of what he knew to be true, what he experienced, what he lived in his own neighborhood & the people living in it. Brilliànt observation that resonated with people everywhere, no matter where you spent your "sweet romantic teenage nights". His area-centric tale set in the NYC/Long Island environs, resonated with so many, proving that no matter where you hail from, as Americans, we're so much more alike than we are different.

I love that whole album I listened to it over and over again flying from Atlanta to London many years ago, when my then husband told me he wanted a divorce, we are friends now but it reminds of that time in my life, back in the States now

Billy Joel’s piano in the mid section of this song is just out of hand. So great. Awesome song.

I can barely strum a guitar and sing at the same time. I can’t imagine how much coordination it would take to do what Billy does…

Always makes me think of the uncle who introduced me to this artist and old friend and an old friend / that friendship - bittersweet memories, but thank you Billy Joel!

I was born in the last years of the cold war... in a country that didn't belong to the western part of this conflict. So growing up, my exposure to Billy Joel's work was very limited. I knew a couple of his later songs, especially from the river of dreams album but I have come to discover and love most of his older songs only in recent years. And help but notice - while today's musicians mostly come from a starting point where they have a good idea for a song in form of a great beat, rhythm, a catchy tune, or a nice melody... in some cases, they have no lyrics at all and if they do, mostly they are throw-away lyrics... of course, there are exceptions where songs have good lyrics with a central important line or an underlying message. But with Billy Joel's songs, it feels like it's different... this man didn't make music and added lyrics to it - he had stories to tell and everything else (tempo, rhythm, melody, arrangement, etc.) came after and helped to tell his story in the best possible way - an art form that he was a master of and that sadly seems to be more and more lost to today's musicians. A loss to the world, that he decided so long ago not to write new songs anymore because he felt like he said what he wanted to say)
