About HOME:
Billy Strings has been hailed as the future of bluegrass, transcending tradition and genre with his high velocity, flat-picking guitar technique and intense, confessional songwriting. HOME, Strings’ remarkable second studio album, is undoubtedly the Michigan-born, Nashville-based artist’s bravest excursion thus far, completely rewiring bluegrass with elements of punk, country, folk rock, and genuine psychedelic exploration to fashion something altogether his own. Strings has infused the aesthetic with his own experiences and inspirations, adopting traditional sonic and lyrical idioms to confront contemporary social truths. With guest appearances from the likes of Jerry Douglas and Molly Tuttle and produced by Glenn Brown (Greensky Bluegrass, Marcus Miller), HOME marks a landmark on Billy Strings’ ongoing creative journey, its fearless songs and freewheeling approach recasting string-based American music in his own inimitable image.
"Watch It Fall" Lyrics
Well it's not so easy now
Though it never was back then
We still can't seem to work this out
But you can still pretend
And these tattered walls and burning bridges
Quickly start to fall
How long until there's nothing left at all?
I've been to California, man
I've seen them city lights
Been stranded in the desert
Scorching days and freezing nights
I'll never understand
Why people try to walk so tall
How long until there's nothing left at all?
Don't you love what you got used to?
When we used to feel so free
Won't you wait a while in silence, love
Watch it fall with me
Well the old men said the great big apple
Is rotten to the core
With Wall Street skimming from the till
While no one minds the store
And how could someone get so low
In a building so damn tall?
How long until there's nothing left at all?
While chunks the size of Delaware
Are falling off the poles
Our heads are buried in the sand
Our leaders dug the hole
Like junkies hooked on fossil fuel
Headin' for withdrawal
How long until there's nothing left at all?
Don't you love what you got used to?
When we used to feel so free
Come and wait a while in silence, love
And watch it fall with me
Now the answers in our heads
To the questions that were asked
It boils up from underground
And leads us to the past
To a place that's long forgotten
When we had enough for all
How long until there's nothing left at all?
Don't you love what you got used to?
When we try to make our stand
The hourglass is growing empty now
Just to leave a pile of sand (Watch it fall)

I've seen The Dead countless times, I've seen John Mayall, I've seen Taj Mahal, Led Zep. and many other greats from the past, but I have never witnessed another person with as much talent as Billy. His superb competence on guitar would be enough to put him over the top, but that's only one segment of this kid's talent. My wife and I are living on the pittance the American government doles out to old farts, so we couldn't afford tickets to Red Rocks, and such places, but we drove over three mountain passes to see them play at a free show in Steamboat Springs, and now I could die happy; I got to see Jerry Garcia, and Billy Strings in the same lifetime! How cool is that?
@sgenetti77
@sgenetti77 2 года назад
That's actually really cool, man. I'm a single dad and I took my 20 year old hip-hop loving son to see him in Cincinnati in March and it was epic. I am not into the Dead's music much at all ("Friend of The Devil" is likely my favorite Dead tune) but when Billy covers their songs I don't care, and the vibe from the two Dead shows I did go to in my early 20's was pretty incredible. Billy's songs have had a sort of transformative effect on me. The lyrics are deep and insightful, and somehow seem like some of them were written just for or about you or your life situation. It's a little strange. I play loud rock guitar, love older metal, heavy melodic rock bands like Soundgarden, etc and I am utterly captivated by Billy's music and I also don't really like bluegrass much, at least not the traditional stuff. It just doesn't seem to matter that bluegrass is the vehicle for great songwriting, because at the end of the day that's what his true talent is after sheer technical ability on the guitar, which is impressive enough on it's own and what first caught my eye about him with "Dust", like many others. What a ride!

Dude, same. I had been meaning to get into bluegrass because I knew there was a lot of talent that went into the playing, but when I heard Billy Strings, I knew that he also had the songwriting to back it up. The structure of his songs is flexible and experimental at times without having to go too far from his roots. Of course, he and his buddies can shred for days. Also, the lyrics are poignant. One of the things that turns me off from a lot of country music (and probably bluegrass from what little else I’ve heard) is when they start listing country stuff and virtue signaling about how patriotic they supposedly are. It feels pandering, and I don’t culturally relate to the rural lifestyle, so if I’m gonna hear a song that mentions it, it has to say more than “You do this too, right?” In this song, there’s a vague sense of antagonism to elitists in the coastal cities, but it feels more justified and generalizable to anyone whose success is unsustainable and founded on making the world worse, not a mindless appeal to being a country boy. In short, Billy Strings is a great artist who deserves to reach sky-high popularity. I’m going to guess that there are other bluegrass artists doing cool things if I just look for them, but he makes a great entry point.

“The song talks about how things are falling apart. The protagonist reminisces about the past and wishes things were still like they used to be. You don't want to be a locomotive engineer in the United States. While the scenery can be amazing, the carriers are slowly erasing as many jobs as they can. Class 1 railroads make billions in profit every quarter, but yet want to get rid of conductor jobs. They are pure greed. PSR comes first. "Uphill slow, downhill fast, tonnage first, safety last"

charlesissleepy Yeah, of course they use the views best suited for the video. But still, here in Sweden it really doesn't matter if you're in the northernmost or southernmost parts of the country, still you have an 85% chance of seeing only pinetree forests. 😄 And Sweden is a fairly big country after all. It measures around 3300 miles from the north to the south. Of course east to west is significantly shorter. 🙂

"Watch It Fall" Well it's not so easy now Though it never was back then We still can't seem to work this out But you can still pretend And these tattered walls and burning bridges Quickly start to fall How long until there's nothing left at all? I've been to California, man I've seen them city lights Been stranded in the desert Scorching days and freezing nights I'll never understand Why people try to walk so tall How long until there's nothing left at all? Don't you love what you got used to? When we used to feel so free Won't you wait a while in silence, love Watch it fall with me Well the old men said the great big apple Is rotten to the core With Wall Street skimming from the till While no one minds the store And how could someone get so low In a building so damn tall? How long until there's nothing left at all? While chunks the size of Delaware Are falling off the poles Our heads are buried in the sand Our leaders dug the hole Like junkies hooked on fossil fuel Headin' for withdrawal How long until there's nothing left at all? Don't you love what you got used to? When we used to feel so free Come and wait a while in silence, love And watch it fall with me Now the answers in our heads To the questions that were asked It boils up from underground And leads us to the past To a place that's long forgotten When we had enough for all How long until there's nothing left at all? Don't you love what you got used to? When we try to make our stand The hourglass is growing empty now Just to leave a pile of sand (Watch it fall

Beautiful art thank you sir! I would be remiss if I did not point out, "A place long forgotten where we had enough for all", is 100% magical thinking. We have, today, the most for all we have ever had, one hundred years ago people worked from daylight till dark in hopes there children wouldn't starve come winter, now we work hard to make sure the kids have unlimited internet on their 5G coverage. Gratitude is the most vital virtue we have forgotten.

I could not be more impressed with a song that is a reckoning for America. Woodie Guthrie was a world class artist during the time of the Great Depression and Dust bowl in Oklahoma. He joined forces with the Socialist party and fought for the rights of the common working man by unionizing. Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash and others followed in his steps helping to make life better for the common working person. I just can't say enough how Billy Strings caught that spirit with this song. It's not a fight to overcome and push back anymore. It's a song that gives me hope we'll still be civilized showing each other love and respect as we become aware of the hard facts and in spite of those facts enjoy life and keep loving.
