Was a big popular song here (Australia) in the early 70's.I still love it today 50 or so years on !! Billy and the Aztecs were a terrific live band and should have been more recognized around the world.

I'm probably a bit young to be enjoying this song. But this song specifically, takes me back to the days when my poppy was still here. Cruising around in his late 70s fairlane, singing along to the radio (4KQ). Great memories.

Billy sadly past away in 2007, way too young. I last saw him play in 2004 when he supported a Deep Purple gig here in Sydney, at the beginning of the set he said: “I tell people I ain’t no fcuking support act, I don’t support anyone, but hey, it is Deep Purple!” Was a good night, Billy Thorpe and Deep Purple, doesn’t get much better than that! Cheers,

Thank's Hanier Family for this reaction to our wonderful Billy Thorpe,....RIP BIlly....a true LEGEND when that title actually meant something. A totally loved and missed part of Australia's music scene. Thanks guys I also recommend checking out "It's Almost Summer" a lovely one from Billy and even his performance of "Over The Rainbow"..Still missed so much here but we have the privilege of his music to carry on his memory. The famous story about Billy Thorpe is in 1968 he was offered a recording contract by Robert Stigwood The Bee Gees manager. In order to make some cash to get to London he decided to do a quick tour. However his guitar player failed to turn up so he was forced to play the guitar himself. He discovered he was not only good at it but he loved doing it. So he decided to stay in Australia and form a new version of the Aztecs. By 1972 he was the biggest act in Australia ! By the way he was arrested on stage a few times for singing a song called “You can’t say F... on the radio!”. Lol

A later song by Billy was 'Believe it just like me' a song he wrote in support of the Australian music industry our great Aussie artists that were not getting the support and recognition, through the 60's & 70's and into the early 80's. By the way it is a great song!

Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs were an Australian rock band formed in Sydney in 1963 I was 17 then. They were active in two incarnations, the first as a beat band from 1963-1967, and as a hard rock band from 1968-1973. They emerged in 1964 with their cover of "Poison Ivy", which kept The Beatles from the top spot of the Sydney charts during the latter's Australian tour. They enjoyed further success through 1965 when the original members quit after a financial dispute. Peace out.

Did you ever see them at Surf City, Kings Cross in the mid to late 60's? Every Friday and Saturday night. Surf City once a live stage play theater and turned into a Rock/Pop dance hall. Many a time, over those years I had there and apart from the oveseas artists that performed there, Billy Thorpe and the Aztects were the best of the best.

A slice of Oz-rock history, for sure. On that note, a recommendation for one of the best live pub rock acts of the 80s around Sydney (and other states when they toured) was Matt Finish, fronted by Matt Moffiitt. They had little success on the radio, but they were a tight, punchy live act and Matt has a fantastically powerful and husky vocal delivery. Their bass player was also in Divinyls and Hoodoo Gurus, two of the best rock acts we’ve ever had in Australia. The song is recommend first is Always Another from their second album Word Of Mouth, but I’d recommend their live version they recorded for Donnie Sutherland’s tv show Sounds Unlimited. The one that has 60k views has poor sound and video quality so try the one by Everyday Golfer or Bill Vickerman 2.0 for a more enjoyable experience. If you love it (and I’m sure you will), their radio hit Short Note is a wonderfully written yet simple piece of music that is brief but impactful. There’s others, but that’s a good start.

Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs go back to 1963. Yeah......they were a clone of the English Mersey Beat bands but much better, although their BEST songs were only pop songs. Classical pianist, Lobby Lloyd ( John Baslington Lyde ) joined the band in 1968 to play bass, even though he was already a leading Aussie blues guitarist. Lobby convinced Billy to play heavy rock and then blues / blues rock. This video is a compilation and not an official release.....the best Billy Thorpe videos are live from a radio station .... just Billy and his guitar, about 3 songs Most People I Know Somewhere Over The Rainbow I cant think of the thirds title, but all are brilliant.

Ozz Rawk classic!!! 🤘 I don't want to encourage Robbo 👀🙄so I'm not going to talk about the times I've seen Thorie and The Aztecs live, but I will request a song for your Friday night. Richard Clapton - Girls On The Avenue Antipodes (music clip). The song is a classic and is about the ladies of the night in Sydney's Kings Cross. It's the one song I will request. I used to see Dick Clap when I was a teenager in the 70's. Like ''Breakfast At Sweethearts'', it's about Kings Cross.

Richard Clapton is a legend! Girls on the Avenue was great, but to my mind, Deepwater and I Am An Island (that one always gets played when I have a few beers and get the bass out) are better. Richard really captured the feel of Australia in the 70's and 80's.

Just a reminder of a ''Who Did It Better'' entry.. Melbourne group The Mixtures had a song in 1970 called ''The Pushbike Song'', which got to be a hit in several countries, including Canada where it got to # 31. You may even know the song! Anyway, Mungo Jerry did a cover of ''The Pushbike Song''. I created a video that features both versions. The Mixtures is the original video, and the Mungo Jerry clip from The Paul Hogan Show. Whenever you get around to doing ''Pushbike Song'', please search for and use title below. I've also sent a link in email. It took a bit of time to make the video, and RU-vid isn't making it easy to find it. *pushbike song (who did it better?) remasteredversions*

Now I had a couple of Moon Martin records in the day and knew ''Bad Case Of Loving You'' before Mr Palmer made into a hit. But I also suggest the song because our Countdown sisters are in the Countdown clip having a little dance. So it would be nice to maybe see it on your WDIB show.
