One of the greatest bands live ever, i've seen them perforn live over 20 times from 1972 up to the present day most underrated bands ever.... Phil Mogg - vocals Michael Schenker - lead guitar Paul Raymond - keyboards, rhythm guitar, backing vocals Pete Way - bass Andy Parker - drums
One of the best live albums ever made. Great production. Michael Shenker's lead playing is the pinnacle of seamless, melodic transitions from one segment to another.
U.F.O. was formed in the UK by Phil Mogg (vocals), Pete Way (bass) and Andy Parker (drums) in 1968... They debuted in 1970, but it wasn't until German lead guitarist Michael Schenker joined U.F.O. after leaving German rockers Scorpions in 1973, and the album 'Phenomenon' was released in 1974 that U.F.O. took off in popularity... They were a huge influence on rock/ metal bands in the 80's - Iron Maiden, Metallica, Europe, Def Leppard, Ratt, etc. Paul Raymond joined in 1977 on keyboards & rhythm guitar for the 1977 album 'Lights out'. However, internal conflicts led to Michael Schenker leaving U.F.O. in 1978, just before the release of their 1979 live album 'Strangers in the night'... the live album was their most successful record to date. U.F.O. carried on in the early 80's w/ guitarist Paul Chapman, but their popularity declined significantly by the mid-80's. Meanwhile, guitarist Michael Schenker briefly rejoined the Scorpions in 1979, but left again soon after and formed his own band Michael Schenker Group (M.S.G.) in the 80's and had some success... In the late 80's/ early 90's, vocalist Robin McAuley joined M.S.G. and they were known as McAuley Schenker Group for 3 albums. In the 90's, Michael Schenker rejoined U.F.O. and the band released 'Walk on water' in 1995 w/ Phil Mogg and Pete Way... However, the reunion was turbulent, and Michael Schenker left U.F.O. again in 2002 after 2 more albums. In 2004, Phil Mogg and Pete Way relaunched U.F.O. w/ Vinnie Moore (guitar) and began recording and touring again w/ Paul Raymond (keyboards & guitar) ... Original drummer Andy Parker rejoined in 2007 and U.F.O. saw their popularity rise again on tour and record sales. However, founding bassist Pete Way was afflicted w/ health issues by 2008 and was absent from U.F.O. and Rob DeLuca (bass) joined the band... In 2018, vocalist Phil Mogg announced that he was retiring and U.F.O. would embark on a farewell tour. Sadly, Paul Raymond, Paul Chapman, and Pete Way all passed away by 2020 (R.I.P.) ... Phil Mogg suffered a heart attack in 2022 and was advised to stay home... All of U.F.O.'s tour plans have been cancelled since. Michael Schenker still actively tours and often plays U.F.O. songs w/ his solo band(s). Other U.F.O. songs - 'Doctor doctor' ... 'Try me' ... 'Rock bottom' ... 'Too hot to handle' ... 'Let it roll' 🔥🔥🎸🎸
Man, they don't make live albums like this anymore. So sonically pleasing to the ears. Judas Priest, AC/DC, Peter Frampton, and a host of others made great live albums in the 70's. Even with today's technology, they can't match that live sound, how they did it, I have no idea. Just wow.
A European group who never got the love they deserved here in the states. Guitarist Michael Schenker started touring in his early teens and seemed only to get better and better over the years. This live album stands above most live Rock albums ever recorded!
This just made my day. The GOAT on the guitar imho. Schenker is straight fire. Rock bottom live and Love to Love are both epic bangers. Ballads like Born to Lose he emotes gorgeously on the solos. Also, greatest live rock album of that time is Strangers in the Night. The last tour they did with Michael.
100%. So great to hear you react to this. You should react to the whole album, you won’t be disappointed. Michael Schenker is the most criminally underrated guitarist just as UFO is an underrated band. Schenker was also one of Randy Rhodes influences.
When I started at UGA in 1981, I had never heard of UFO until my roommate dropped the needle on "Rock Bottom." I grew up and lived in the sticks of South Georgia, so this group was new to me as their music never took root down here as airplay of such groups were scarce. Since then, I've been hooked.
I'm a Metal Head since '79 and I have to say you guys are going down a rabbit hole that gets deep,lol...just the fact you analyzed it and did not just give up on it makes me hit the like button
That entire double live album is one of the greatest live albums ever recorded. One of my favorite albums of all time. You need to get that one on vinyl.
Was lucky enough to see them multiple times at the old Amphitheater in Chicago. Was there when recorded tracks for this album. One of the Greatest live albums of all time!
I have owned this album since it came out in 1979, the year I graduated high school and it is still one of the best, if not THE best, live rock album I've ever heard. This has been played at countless parties in my youth and I still jam this either in my car or at home regularly. Thanks for the reaction to this classic hard rock song. You could do a special episode to react to the entire Strangers in the Night album. You won't be disappointed. Thanks again guys.
I saw them several times but the most interesting was opening for Jethro Tull in a HS gym in 1975. They were a powerhouse in the day. Fine band to see live. Good choice! The song is about the German bombing of London in WWII.
rock bottom live from the same album is pretty amazing, has a massive guitar solo they inspired a lot of metal bands, iron maiden often plays their song 'doctor doctor' before their live shows and steve harris dressed in reference to them in the 80s a lot of metal bands of from the 80s had songs called 'lights out' which i always assumed is also a reference to them
What a great pick! I had the great pleasure of being at this actual concert and the crowd was as wild as it sounds on the recording. Ah, the good old days.
I saw them my senior year in high school 1979… they just kicked you in the teeth from the 1st song. No one could touch Michael Schenker on guitar back then. Thanks brothers!
Well, except for the fact that we'd all heard the first Van Halen record by then. No knock on Michael, though, he's still in a class by himself. His combination of taste, feel, soul, melody, tone, fluidity, and technique altogether is unmatched. Its like in his solos he's composing incredible melodies on the spot at high speed, and effortlessly mixing it with the grittier bluesy playing.
This song along with others on this live album came out in the studio one year prior to Van Halen’s first release. Eddie was a great technical player, but to me his playing lacks deeper emotional tones and style. Michael and UFO was a slightly underrated guitarist/band. UFO is hard driving rock. Van Halen is more glamour pop metal rock.
Saw Schenker/MSG a few years back, nice small venue, place was packed, had never seen him or UFO live, dude was absolutely on fire, was as blown away as I hoped to be and they played pretty much every song I wanted to hear from his entire catalog...Michael Schenker was on FIRE! He even busted out one of his classic white Gibson V's (he played Dean V's through most of the set)
Hey guys..It's awesome that you guys are reacting to UFO!! I first heard this band in the late 70's and it's been one of those bands that always comes up in the early days of metal discussions..Great band for sure..Rock on guys!!Shout out from the old metal head from Detroit!! Peace and love as always..Keep up the excellent work!!!
As a kid in the late 70s & early 80s everyone had posters of Kiss, Van Halen, Boston. Led Zeppelin & the Eagles. But there were a few teen that posters were UFO, Little Feat, Budgie.
MOTHER MARY, THIS KID’S, and I’M A LOSER are a couple of Bangers. All the tracks are great on here. Really appreciate you listening to one of my ‘desert island discs’. I will tell you that I have probably put in more time listening to this album than almost any other album in my collection. So glad you guys got to hear some of it. Love taking the journey with you Fellas…..“And we out!”
Nice reaction :) As a lot of other people have said, one of the greatest live albums of all time. Not a bad song from start to finish and it's a double album. The next song that the people were wanting to hear was Rock Bottom and it's absolutely killer!
As you sit back and marvel - remember this is LIVE in '79 - with the guitar god Michael Schenker. This is considered by many to be one of the greatest live albums of all time. SO many bangers. Oh, did I mention the guitar work?
Damn dudes you dropped another deep track, You guys are the true masters of the deep dive reactors. Great reaction guys keep it up. Check out Doctor, Doctor next.
An amazing band and one of the best live albums ever. Glad you enjoyed it. Rock Bottom from the same album really showcases Michael Schenker's guitar playing. Andy Parker kills the drums as well.
Great reaction, and what a treat for Friday!! SO many incredible tracks on this live album (and probably one of the BEST recorded live albums of the 70's!) Love to Love, Doctor Doctor, Rock Bottom ALL need to be experienced from this album! Michael Schenker (guitar), Andy Parker (drums), Paul Raymond (keys), Pete Way (bass) & Phil Mogg (vocals) are OFF THE CHAIN!! Cheers.
Heard the studio version of this in just about every house or apartment party that I ever enjoyed too much in the late 70s. Killer song from a killer album.
As a teen in the early 80's, I bought the Lights Out studio album for this one song. I figured that there would be a few more killer tracks that I hadn't heard yet. I was wrong.
YES! One of the greatest live albums ever! I was lucky enough to see them on this tour when they opened for Blue Oyster Cult. Amazing show! Rock Bottom is a real banger, as well
Ok you are daring me to subscribe now. My favorite guitar player originally from Scorpions as a teenager Michael Schenker ended up with UFO because their guitar player had a passport problem and borrowed Michael. You can hear his German accent in his solos it's freaking AWESOME!! This is one of those deals where the live version is better than the studio (in my humble opinion). Any song on this album is reaction worthy especially: Mother Mary, This Kids and the lady's favorite LOVE TO LOVE!! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
My first concert . I was at this recording 12 years old remember it like it was yesterday. One of the best live albums ever made. Also arguably one of the best rock guitarist of all time . Amazing quality of the recording and musicianship.
You just heard the greatness of a kid named Michael Schenker, brother of Rudy Schenker of the Scorpions, on guitar when he was barely into his 20's. The song Rock Bottom has one of the greatest solos ever captured and he was a teenager when he played it. Michael Schenker is known as one of the greatest to ever pick up a guitar. His style is blues based pentatonics mixed with the more complicated classical scales and set on fire when the two are mixed. He knows how to build and build a solo till it catches fire. You guys were right on about the musicianship. Once again showing you guys know what you're talking about.
Guitar God Michael Schenker, 'nuff said!! This album is a true masterclass of the art of lead guitar playing, a sort of hard rock /heavy metal bible for future generations of guitarists!
I was at the show where that was recorded (in Chicago!) UFO is one of my favorite bands and Michael Schenker is my favorite guitarist. For some reason they never got the recognition as most of their contemporaries and just as they were catching fire Michael left the band. The song after that one is rock bottom, check it out.
A hugely under-rated band. Schenker is the man on guitar. SITN is one of if not the best live album of all time. Incredible performances captured brilliantly.
They were very big I was 11 when I first heard their music now I am 60 so they were huge back in my day. That’s what got me off of disco and into real music.
Since everybody's already said the name Michael Schenker already. He's one of the most underrated guitar virtuosos that's ever play the guitar he started out in his teens with a little band called The Scorpions with his older brother check out some early scorpions when Michael was around first two albums let's say
Oh man I'm strapped in for this one!!!!!!! Let's GO! You'll need to go down that rabbit hole. I'm ready!!!!!! My girlfriend's favorite band. They had a following. Michael Schenker is a top notch guitarist. Can I suggest you do a song called I'm a Loser? Either from this live record or the studio. I PROMISE you, I PROMISE you you will not be disappointed. Now I gotta go find your other reactions for this KILLER band. Much love and respect always
Can't give enough credit to Paul Raymond who played keys and held down rhythm guitar on this album. Michael Schenker reportedly did not want to do overdubs on this album so it was a true reflection of a live album. That whole album is worth a listen lots of great songs and solos on that album.
I got a CD that has lime 40 songs in it and they all rock I heard them in the late seventies. And I think they over shadowed by a couple of other bands . UFO does have a following. Peace n love
I adore Michael Schenker (between: Hendrix and EVH HE was "THE guitarist's guitarist!" 🤘🤘 NO question!), BUT the "secret" to this band was, always: Andy Parker's drumming and Pete Way's bass playing!!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥 (and Schenker, by this point, was about to leave this band because he was so messed-up on smack! (WAAAAY deeper than Jimmy Page, who was a disgusting mess in '76 & '77!) ...and, STILL, put out 2 brilliant albums with a solo band in the early '80s [He and Gary Barden were MAGIC!!!! ...This is Schenker I am talking about, here (in case that didn't seem clear!)].)
Woo-hoo, you guys just stumbled into one of the best live albums ever by a Rock Band, it influenced all heavy bands in the 1980s and I saw them 5 times, twice for the Lights Out album then for Obsession the following year. They rank just below Led Zeppelin and the The WHO for great, quality hard rock with metal leanings. Great band and album guys, Rock Bottom is epic on it. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
I bought Lights Out and Obsession on vinyl from my local flea market a few years ago. That must've been amazing seeing them back in the day that many times!!! 👍
@@wc1994 Yes, the shows with Schenker were the best but they were great with Paul Chapman and Vinnie Moore, saw them play lead guitar once each and they killed it as well. UFO was a monster band that never had any luck getting really big but their fans know how good they really were.
Honestly, I usually prefer studio tracks, but for UFO, their live recordings are kick a$$. One recommendation I would have is: "Mystery Train" from around '79 / '80. (live or studio) you'll dig it boys.
Found some UFO, that's cool, they never broke big in the U.S. but they are certainly an important heavy rock band from the '70's; was at the grocery store a short time back, realized I was humming along with a track being played over the PA in the store, had to stop and actively listen for a second...it was UFO, "Too Hot to Handle"...I was hearing UFO, in a freaking grocery store, I realized it is official, I'm old now lol
