Binging with Babish: Ram-Don from Parasite

Rarely does a dish serve as such a central metaphor for a film's primary conflict: in Parasite, boujee beef sits oppressively atop bargain noodles in the Park family's version of Ram-Don, the way they sit so literally atop others. It was tricky doing this one without spoilers, but I think I managed!

I’m korean, and almost everything was perfection (both pronunciation and the recipe). The only missing point here was the absence of soy sauce when stir frying vegetables for the jjampong. When stir frying all the vegetables, but prior to adding the dashi, put little bit of soy sauce around the edge of vegetables. Fried soy sauce around the edge brings out a new level of aroma and flavor. Also, instead of korean dashi, pork or chicken (especially pork) broth goes well with jjampong.
@heroino89
@heroino89 3 года назад
Well the pronunciation wasn't perfect. He pronounced the J of Jjajangmyeon more like in Jacques than in Jack. And Neoguri is not pronounced like Neo from the Matrix. Wow, I must be really fun at parties. Just realized how pedantic this comment makes me look. Anyway, I agree with everything else you say and I love that Andrew puts in the time and effort to research the pronunciation and the cultural background of his dishes.

The director mentioned that the significance of this dish was to portray that regardless of class, wealthy or poor, children want to eat instant noodles because it just tastes good. Kids that young do not know or discriminate certain kinds of foods based on what is considered for the "elite" or for the average consumers. But the Park family add high-quality beef to what is considered "cheap" instant noodles to make it more suitable to their class level. Director Bong is a genius!

Yeah, it has multiple symbols tied to it. -Something a kid would like because kids don't know the diff between high quality and low quality food. But the mother can't stand it being a "low food" so she adds expensive beef to it. -Mother was also just going to dump the whole thing away when the kid says he didn't want to eat it. It would have cost the main family quite a lot of money to even eat it but to the mother, it was something she could just throw it away with no worry. Now I'm hungry lol

I recently watched this movie and I missed the entire significance of the Ram-don. I just thought it was a dish she didn't know how to make but managed to fake her way through it. @@passiveagressive4983 u can hear that it's still called "Jjapaguri" in the film rather than "ram-don" so it's not the director inventing a new name for the dish on a whim, rather it's taking the same pattern of combining the brand names of the noodles used (Jjapagetti + neoguri) and applying that to the base type of noodles in the dish (ramen+ udon) to make the name more comprehensible to an international audience which may not be familiar with these korean brands

I always watch this video when I'm eating instant ramen that I've fried up with some leftover beef after a special occasion (usually something like chateaubriand because it's my dad's favorite) because it hits the right stim and let me tell you - if you really, *really* want to do something like this, it's best to just use leftovers, lol. Still tastes fantastic and it isn't a waste.

There was a part that dads made food for their kids, so a lot of them made food putting in a lot of effort. But there was one guy who just made Ram-Don which doesn't require that much effort(at least compared to other food that they made). But kids picked Ram-Don as their favorite food. I can NEVER use Korean chopsticks... they're so heavy and unwieldy! I definitely prefer the japanese-style.

I'm korean and I prefer using the wooden chopsticks, cause they're easier to use (I suck at chopsticks, shame to my kind)

@@basicblisseys3494 aww you're not a shame to your kind. There is a breed of us Koreans (half Korean) who don't know how to use chopsticks.

Fun Fact: Hanwoo beef is only available to South Korea and it's citizens. The only way to access it is to travel to the country and try it for yourself.

"It's the worlds most expinsive cookie!" Oh, what makes it so costly? "It's just a tollhouse cookie, but we wrapped it in goldleaf"
@FlutterMouse
@FlutterMouse 4 года назад
The funny thing is, what restaurants charge for food decorated in gold leaf is WAY out of proportion to what edible gold leaf actually costs. You pay like 18 dollars for a pack of gold leaf. You can make your own gold decorative cookies at home for fraction of the price.
@writershard5065

What's worse is that - imo - food wrapped in gold leaf just looks gross and inedible. It just looks like someone took a shit on my food.
