NZ Rubbish Trucks goes international with a visit to the Gold Coast, Australia. Travelling for a work function, there was not much time for me to get out and explore the area but with a 3-hour time difference between where I was staying and New Zealand, I was often awake early and took this chance to see if I could capture any videos of trucks and the like working.
Sadly I came up short but have tried to put together a couple of videos showcasing things I spotted.
I found out afterwards that although drivers start early, trucks will often not be emptying bins in residential and apartment areas until much later in the day due to noise complains. So sadly I lucked out and my 4:30am start to try and find trucks was a bit of a waste of time. By share luck, my Australian garbo mate who lives/works in a different part of Australia just so happened to be on holiday at the same time I was there; it was great to catch up with you!
There will be two videos, one focusing on the limited number of trucks I spotted including while in transit to airports and another for bins, dumpsters and compactors.

While on foot, hanging around street corners trying to spot rubbish trucks, I documented the different sorts of bins that are left out on the streets and spotted some compactors as well. Bins from businesses and accommodation facilities were scattered all over the place. Along with standard front lift bins, there is a high uptake of onsite compactors for large facilities. It is very rear to see a compactor in New Zealand and they are usually very securely locked away so took a look at their units. Noticeable different to anything I'd seen in New Zealand (outside of their accessibility) is the use of an auger/corkscrew mechanism for compacting the rubbish into the box. It reminds me of a scaled-up kitchen mincer and has the same results by the looks of it!
Stationary compactors I've seen in New Zealand use a horizontal ram/press to move waste from the hopper into the box and they don't really break things down until there is enough waste in the box for it to press against. However these auger compactors start braking things down right away in the hopper.
