NZ Rubbish Trucks is dedicated to filming different styles of rubbish trucks used in New Zealand. From bin flipping to compactor action, front & side lift, rear load and low entry vehicles: this channel will try and cover it. Welcome to the channel!

I have had an interest in rubbish trucks and how they operate since I was a kid. I started to film them in my free time once I was older as hobby. I try to capture different types of trucks and waste collection processes in different towns.

Over the years the trucks on our streets have changed so there are some vintage vehicles that have been here documented which are no longer with us today.

Maybe one day a driver will be happy for me to mount cameras on their truck for some closeup action or even help them out on their route for on hand experience. Health & Safety will probably prevent this sadly.

Happy to take suggestions or chat about trucks or the general rubbish collection process. Feel free to email me: nzrubbishtrucks@gmail.com

Very cool! I love the color yellow this truck is, it really stands out. I found it also creative how you included some go pro shots. Having done similar ones myself it's always nerve-racking when the bin is tipped just because you're sorta second guessing your camera placement.

Thank you for your kind words, glad you liked it. Yes, it is a really nervous time when the bin goes up with your camera on it, not knowing if you will see it again. It is very hit-and-miss too to get the right angle on the camera. I haven't done it enough times to get it just right and have had some useless shots that just haven't worked. Got to get the angle just right if you want to see the hopper. Thanks for commenting!

Thank you for checking in with me. Sadly I am out of footage for now. What would you like to see, if I can get some more footage? I have seen the council park and public bin truck regularly driving past my house at 7:30am each day and could pick up where I left off in December 2021. I have also spotted the electric vehicles diving past my house on collection day at a similar time. Sadly I'm usually heading out to work at this time myself. I would like to film the "JJ Richards" and "Low Cost Bins" Front Load trucks sometime. And would love to ask the nice driver of the residential "Low Cost Bins" Mercedes-Benz Side Load truck and see if I can put some cameras physically on his truck. There's also a new "OJI Fibre Solutions" front load truck in town. So many options I could do. But I'm just lacking confidence to go out and film 😞

Thank you for your kind words. I take it you are a bit of a front load rubbish truck fan? Are there any other kinds of rubbish trucks that take your interest? I have some plans to try and get more footage of front load trucks. There is a nice new "Oji Fibre Solutions" truck which has just hit the streets of Palmy and I'd love to get some footage of Enviro NZ trucks which I seem to neglect a bit on my channel. I could also try filming the front load "Low Cost Bins" truck. I should also track down the "JJ Richards" truck as they try to establish their brand in town. Sadly it is all about finding time and being in the right location when the trucks are there.

Palmy! Man I love these particular front loaders/ hino combination. I want to owner operate one. I’m from palmy. Question- can they to the packing cycle while driving? Cheers
@NZRubbishTrucks
@NZRubbishTrucks Месяц назад
Thanks for commenting! I'm not too sure whether they can pack while driving. I guess it depends how much PTO power it would take from the truck to drive and pack at the same time. I've seen some RU-vid videos of American trucks which can do both, so don't see why these trucks wouldn't be able to either. I would think however there is risk of driver distraction for the driver to be operating the compactor while driving.

I watched part 1 and was really impressed with the truck and its contribution to saving the environment. I am also impressed with this truck for the same reason. However, I really miss the roar and the sound of the packer, which is a big attraction for the enthusiasts and the filmers. The constant "whirring" of the electrics doesn't have the same appeal to me, and I am wondering how popular with the young garbos this will be after the initial curiosity wears off. The favourite part of this video for me is the operation of the hopper and packer and, of course, your very well written and informative description.
@NZRubbishTrucks
@NZRubbishTrucks 3 месяца назад
As always, thank you @aussiejohn5835 ! Yes I agree with you, I'm not much of a fan of the "whirring" sound of the electrics on the compactor; does get a little annoying. At least with the glass truck there was no sound until the PTO was turned on, whereas the rear loader needs to have this running most of the time to work. I wonder what the battery consumption difference between the two EV trucks I've filmed are because of the drain from the PTO (Power Take-Off)? I probably write too much in my descriptions at times, but I like to try and explain and provide information where I can. It is also fun doing the research into things as well. Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for commenting!

@aussiejohn5835 3 месяца назад
@NZRubbishTrucks I must say that for me you definitely don't write too much and I really appreciate the time you take to do the research and write the description. I know that many people don't read the description, and that can be disheartening, but just think how many will read it during the time the video is online 🤔 that makes it worthwhile in my mind.

It's not quite that bad. They can travel up to 180km on one charge, but on a daily average they only travel 40 - 50km per day which is the same average as our city's diesel equivalent.

Thanks for your comment! I do have a lot more details and specifications attached to the main video. In summary, the two trucks the council has have been operating for since August 2018. Potential range is 180km but records show the trucks only travel 40 - 56km per day, which is about the same for all the council rubbish trucks: diesel or electric. They take about 7 hours to fully recharge. Sadly I should have asked the driver about downtime and maintenance on the vehicles but I did not. The council in late 2023 purchased two new similar sized rear load DIESEL rubbish trucks. So maybe the electric trucks don't quite meet the council's expectations, or maybe it is simply the cost involved in producing these New Zealand made EV trucks which have an 8 year payoff and the council may not be eligible to receive more Government funding like they did back in 2018 when they were first purchased.

I must say that I am totally fascinated by this truck and the collection process, but I can't quite get the idea of the driver sorting the glass kerbside as opposed to a central sorting facility such as we have here in Australia. Having said that, I am really impressed with the speed at which this driver performs her duties. I really appreciate your well written and informative description, which helped me understand the benefits of this truck. This is an excellent video, well done 👏 👍
@NZRubbishTrucks
@NZRubbishTrucks 4 месяца назад
Thanks for your comments! Yes, sorting glass by colour at the curb is a very unique thing to do and I'm not aware of very many councils even in New Zealand who go to these lengths. But it makes sense to do it at this point and is way safer. Once the glass is broken and mixed, it becomes very hard to separate the colours. It is safer for all involved too because only whole bottles/jars are accepted at this point and it will be the last contact human hands have with the glass. This means no one needs to come in close contact with the glass once it is broken in the truck or unloaded at the recovery centre. No one at the recovery centre then needs to sift through the glass sorting it out. At the recovery centre, the truck pulls up to the appropriate coloured bay and tips out the load. Then machinery like a front end loader can move the materials around and make appropriate piles etc before being trucked off again for further processing.
