Booker Taliaferro Washington (April 5, 1856 -- November 14, 1915) was an African-American educator, author, orator, and advisor to presidents of the United States. Between 1890 and 1915, Washington was the dominant leader in the African-American community. Washington was of the last generation of black American leaders born into slavery and became the leading voice of the former slaves and their descendants, who were newly oppressed by disfranchisement and the Jim Crow discriminatory laws enacted in the post-Reconstruction Southern states in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1895 his Atlanta compromise called for avoiding confrontation over segregation and instead putting more reliance on long-term educational and economic advancement in the black community.

The message and the scope of Dr. Washington's address put a lump in my throat. "Cast down your bucket where you are." Indeed. The narrator is a pleasure to listen to as well.

I had hoped more of the book, "Up From Slavery" would be here, it's truly worth retelling again and again. His young life was set on a good course and he took full advantage, following not after foolish endeavors but seeing how to make his way and in doing so, he was able to do amazing things...Alabama was and is proud of this man that made a real difference.

Booker knew that money is power and could see this, while knowing economic and financial independence, especially financial power and independence, was the means to making the black community relevant and with justified power and equality. As opposed to DuBois, it's about doing and proving for Booker, not talking and having crumbs thrown to the black community as DuBois proposed.
