I thought there could only ever be 1 group of toa around, like a legend of some sort. It's blowing me away that three groups of toa toa meet together. Reminds me of that Power Rangers movie with all the generations of PRs meeting up.
@@centurosproductions8827 having makuta teridax take bionicle's place of god is really horrifying. That what makes it so good. Other lego themes don't even dare do this. And it is permanent. Until Mata Nui, golden armor tahu, and a space rock came in.
Some corrections: Bomonga was the one who translated "Bara Magna" beneath the colosseum, not Gaaki. The two dead Glatorian didn't just end up in the same tunnels somehow during the Shattering, they were supposed to be emergency pilots in case Mata Nui didn't function. They died because of the Great Cataclysm.
@@ToaFierek2 they were underneath the colosseum, which noone previously to the 2008 story entered. They weren't in the movie or anywhere in the Metru Nui story arc
@@Alex-mb2cy i know that, but my question was if they were alive and well behind the scenes before the great cataclysm ocurred (which we witnessed in Legends of Metru Nui), even tho they weren't mentioned or shown in 2004 since they weren't a thing until late 2008 and early 2009.
Heh, I just love the toa empire dimension, it works great in contrast with the main universe and shows that it's abusive actions that create evil and no species are inherently evil.
@@DuckBricks This decision to implement ambiguity made bionicle's final chapters really stand out and elevate it beyond a toy franchise a little bit, I was generally pleased with this direction tho at the time it was a complex narrative to follow for a teen, but intriguing non the less.
Had this on my Watch Later list for months, finally got to it. As someone that followed Greg Farshty's stories and collected every scrap of info put out by LEGO during the BIONICLE run, your completeness and attention to detail are without peer. I bought some "cute robots" at a Toys'R'Us for my small son back in the Christmas season of 2002 - Bohrocs, I believe. I bought all six Rakshi and Toa Vakama shortly after that ; afterwards it was my mission to get the new releases from LEGO while buying the older releases from E-Bay sellers and collecting all the lore i could find. To this day I have almost all of the BIONICLE series (never could find any Mamas Crabs for sale, for example, and the MacDonald's toys are priced like gold), and I am still in awe of your collection. Kudos, "DuckBricks"!! Duty, Honor, Destiny!
One of my favorite years! The introduction to the bionicle multiverse, the battle in the sky's at the core of the universe. Truly one of the best stories of all of bionicle history
Thank you for all this work. As all Bionicle comics were never translated in french, and as I was a child in the early 2000s, I’ve never been able to learn more about the lore, which is way more complex that what I thought !
Such an epic journey I have been on, found my old box of Bionicles in the attic and combined them with all my latest purchases, I am loving this revival!!!
I've seen movies shorter than this episode. Dang, man, two hours. I'm going to be doing house chorus while I watch you. Anyway, in for quite an episode!!
It's been 13 years and Mata Nui Rising still gives me chill bumps. "... and towers above the clouds for the first time in a hundred... thousand... years". The words and the image are just breathtaking.
They were fighting because the Hagah announced their intent to destroy the Coliseum to flush out Teridax, and the Mahri, being the sworn protectors of Metru Nui and already on edge for Takanuva disappearing, weren’t having any of that 😂
Holy cow!! 2 hours long! Gonna order some pizza and buy some beer for this one. I've been following this series heavy when it popped up randomly on my feed
Oooooooooh! Karda Nui, as in cardio or cardiovascular or cardiac. It’s name is mutation of heart. Because it’s a heart. I’ve watched all episodes leading to this, but I’m just now making that connection.
Great summary! This was one of my favorite years! I remember when I saw that we were getting the original Toa Nuva, I was super pumped. I didn’t really care that they looked different, they looked cool and I knew that I was going to buy the sets. They sure don’t make sets like these anymore.
I hate the fact that all this was going down and I had no idea it was this deep. Like water distorting your view of the inside of a cup. I just thought that every new set was a new story. I didn't even know some of the sets were the same Toa, so I may have bought the same guy twice technically. Glad there's this to fill me in on all I've missed. I really miss this toyline and wish the reboot could've picked captured that glory, but it was just Hero Factory playing imposter
After all these years, the 2008 storyline makes sense to me. Lol! LEGO should have kept the story simple and straight forward like from 2001-2005. Maybe that's why they did sort of a soft reset in 2009's story. This is the best recap ever!!!
I think that was definitely one of the contributing factors to the 2009 move to Bara Magna. Greg Farshtey had gone so wild with the serials and additional characters (for better and for worse) that by the time planning for 2008 rolled around, there were _way_ too many moving parts to keep the series going in a way that made sense. You had two active toa teams (12 characters including Takanuva), a team of about 10 villains, about a dozen assorted antiheroes and bad guys with unique motivations, another dozen good guys with unique motivations and disconnected adventures...I'm not surprised somebody said "I think we need to step away from this for simplicity's sake."
@@Dudeman23rd There was NOT too much story to keep track of for many of us still, though. Not all of us agree with this sentiment. Not that I don’t love BM. I do. The issue was mediums, how many there were for instance, and how many countries didn’t even have some things like the novels for instance.
What I thought the 2008 story was: The Toa Nuva are flying around in mata nuis literal heart to try and kick-start it whole battling the other makuta I only heard of in passing in the Bionicle World book earlier. What the actual 2008 story was:
@@DuckBricks It's a real shame because I was a passive consumer of the story and never really got into the serials. To learn a few years later that all of the _good_ parts of '08 happened offscreen (from my perspective) was really disheartening. It made me feel like the stuff I had actually known about (the Toa Nuva in Karda Nui) was just filler and I had been gipped out of a better story.
I just finished this Ps I think that you could do a new series called bionicle: what if in which you choose a part of the story like: what if the makuta survived teridax's plan or what if the Mata never defeated teridax in 2001 or what if icarax overfrown teridax and so on. Just to give you an idea for a new series
this was a NICE BIG HELPING! Oh my! These videos have become something I've looked forward too each fortnight! Would love to make a donation in support of all your time!
@@DuckBricks honestly your doing a massive service to people like me who are now edging into their 30’s and have always been curious as to how it all went down. A lot of us have only seen the three main films and that’s as deep as our lour knowledge goes. So this really is a massively important series in regards to Bionicle as a whole.
toa ignika was considered the most powerful toa ever? didn't know that... anyway this is probably the year with the best written story/stories. timeless stuff
Bone chilling dimensions, a character who's body got sliced in half by a portal, a makuta who's atoms were scattered across the universe and 2 hours of story for just 1 year...and to think this is supposed to be a toy line
Very impressive recap here, excellent job!! I do have one question: What were the armies of the Brotherhood of Makuta and the Order of Mata Nui like? How big were they and what were they comprised of? There were only about 100 makuta if I remember correctly, and I'd imagine that the OOMN wasn't too big, otherwise it wouldn't make much sense that they have been a hidden organization this whole time.
I imagine the Order had armies comprised mostly of various robots and Rahi species, but likely also various Toa from across the Matoran Universe. As for the Brotherhood, probably mostly Shadow Matoran and paid Dark Hunter mercenaries. At least, that’s what I would ascertain from a quick glance at the BS01 wiki and some general rationalization.
Maybe since the universe died and Spherus mMagna reformation will never happen, maybe he will take over Bara Magna with the Toa or something something. I Mean, asuming that Tuma Skrall invasion asimilate the rest of Bara Magna and make them stand a chance against the Baterra, also asuming too that them did not kill them in the procces cuz Tuma is an idiot that dont repair his back armor
I'm sad, I went to Bricks N' Minifigs in Fullerton, CA last Saturday and they said you were there the day before. It would've been awesome to meet you while I was out there. Also thankyou for not buying out all the Bionicle sets while you were there, because that's definitely what I did and I was able to add some amazing sets to my collection.
51:30 Such a sick display of the power of the Ignika. And the fact that Toa Ignika immediately goes to eliminate the other Makuta after doing this makes me imagine him as Bionicle’s version of Doom Guy, vanquishing Makuta with an unyielding rage lmao
What I find kinda cool: up to end of this chapter the Matorans, Toas, Titans and Turaga fought for Mata Nui; in the following chapters Mata Nui will now fight for them
Yyyyep, I immediately thought of Suicide Squad, the moment you mentioned the Federation of Fear. I can’t wait to check them out, I love the idea conceptually of Brutakka, a disgraced hero, who has dabbled in the dark, leading a team of outlaws and wild cards. Brutakka would have a strong understanding of the outlaws and their corrosive morality and yet be more so steadfast in an attempt to redeem himself and maybe just...maybe...his fellow Federation members (haha NAWT’)
2 Things! 1. I know this ain’t original but this series deserves more views! It makes me sad how little future generations will know of Bionicles! Luckily we have these videos to show our own future generations! 2. I hope we see movies or a show someday going through this masterpiece! Ninjago is great (And I watched each episode until some real life stuff made AT&T unaffordable) but Bionicles was One of a Kind! I’ll keep dreaming!
This story is so wild and would be sooooo cool as an animated series geared towards teens and adults. My only fear would be that there are just too many characters and story lines! Might call for some spin off series or movies
It’s almost like a movie and this video is absolutely fabulous. It might sound silly but why the toa Nuba wish to reboot mata nui? I kind of forget the purpose of this….
The original mision was simply to awaken Mata Nui to end Teridax's grip on Metru Nui. However in these later chapters Mata Nui started dying and the mask of life was constantly monitoring the great spirit's vitals. The Mask had a failsafe if Mata Nui died which was to kill everything residing inside Mata Nui if such thing happened. It all started to save their home and ended becoming a fight for their lives.
Honestly your videos might be the 2nd best way to experience the story. Best way being actually going through the official source material, but this is much more convenient.
Dark Mirror would have been the _perfect_ opportunity to release sets featuring Toa Tuyet and Toa Nidhiki, as well as to-scale versions of the Toa Mata and Metru versions of Takua and Kapura. Just saying. But alas, it may have been confusing for people not reading the serials, and instead we got BIONICLE Stars Av-Matoran builds two years later. Still, at least Imagine Dragons composed the perfect theme song for it...after G1 ended: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FHp48M8N3J0.html
Was there any trouble with consistency regarding the Makuta's blindness? I have not read all the comics (yet!), however from the footage you put it sometimes seemed like the writers forgot that they were blind and depended on the corrupted av-matoran to see
So usually the Shadow Matoran were around, they’d get a quip or two as the Makuta fought, but for all intents and purposes, the blindness didn’t really affect the story
Btw Rogue One OST really fits Empire Universe ^^ Thrawn's theme when you're talking about collecting artifacts too. It reminds me his office on Chimaera
Ahkmou shouldve became a Toa of Shadow. Botar and Carapar shouldve never died (screw Botar's Replacement, hope his name stays anonymous). Instead, Carapar shouldve been driven insane but became smart in the process, while Botar and Trinuma both survived, with Botar getting his armor damaged and later patched up. Ancient shouldve had some more importance and died properly (killed for being a spy, not for knowing too much). Krika shouldve lived and became a good guy, maybe some other Karda Nui Makuta as well. Toa Mahri shouldve been Toa Inika again and wore their original masks again (meaning Jaller wouldve worn Lhikans Hau again). The Destiny War shouldve been more fleshed out. The City of Silver dimension shouldve been the Red Star. The order of dimensions Takanuva shouldve visited should've been Toa Empire-Kingdom-Red Star, after which he gets to Karda Nui through the Red Star teleporter. City of Silver doesnt exist anymore, its the Red Star now. Core universe Tuyet shouldve been actually dead and instead the Tuyet of the Toa Empire should've faked her death and made her way into the core universe. Icarax shouldve a far larger role in 08 and had been the final boss of 2008. Takanuva should've had a far more important role. Vultraz needed a better end (or at least escape the Melding universe to participate in the Battle of Bara Magna). Zaktan's return should've been foreshadowed in 2008 rather than coming out of nowhere in Reign of Shadows. Vultraz and Mazeka shouldve appeared in the main story. Dont know how to treat Melding Teridax, maybe make him relevant somehow. Wow thats a lot of my 08 criticism i may even have more. Oh wait, the Toa Nuva shouldve looked actually recognizable rather than looking like unrecognizable strangers, and need good weapons, and original color schemes from 2002, as well as eye colors, not have all lime green eyes. Just fix Toa Phantoka and Mistika. Edit: Solek is actually the main protagonist of 08. Hes a god. Hes our king. Hes legendary. Hes better than Tanma. Hail Solek. Hail Solekians.
So really, in 2008, the only set-based characters that didn't return were those that were dead - like Sidorak - irrelevant Rahi, Umbra and the Vahki. That's pretty impressive since they even found a way to get the Bohrok a part in the narrative.
@@DuckBricks ah yeah of course I forgot they never stopped Vahki production in the Empire. That’s even more impressive, though also even more surprising that characters like Umbra and Karzhani got left out since they weren’t doing much of anything at the time.
In chapter 7 didn’t you say that tuyet’s dead body wasn’t actually her body or something along those lines when are we going to get elaboration on that (and if I am misremembering please correct me) Great video by the way, takanuva’s multiverse adventure would have made a great filler arc if Bionicle ever had a TV show
Mata Nui apparently does not count as an empty shell. He has a spirit like most inhabitants of the Matoran universe have. The idea was that Mata Nuis consciousness would fight Makuta out of the system. So he had to weaken it. He shut down the robot, but now the robot obviously didn't function, so he had to wait for someone to boot it up again. And even that was not supposed to be so soon, because he needed the robot to be vulnerable. So he wanted Mata Nui to have a near-death experience before waking up. Only then he was able to take over.
So did the Makuta all have similar forms at first and have since moved on to "possessing" mechanical bodies, like Teridax did? Or is this what they all looked like originally?
I think we don't even know how the Makuta looked before the turning. The forms that they are in during the actual story years are their bodies that were modified after the transformation. And Makuta like to shapeshift. So we can't even be sure whether we have ever seen Teridax's original form. The batlike Makuta have taken their form specifically for the Karda Nui mission. The insectoid Makuta also chose their form specifically for the swamp mission but were mutated by the pit water so that they were stuck permanently in that form.
@@Makutros Ok, thanks. I was under the impression that Teridax was his "original form" during the Mata Nui era at the beginning of the series, but what you're saying makes sense.
Vezon has always been my favorite character, kind of a fluke of a being but he’s out there, somewhere, unbound by the universe and it’s heroes and villains
