BioShock is a biopunk first-person shooter video game with horror themes developed by 2K Boston (now Irrational Games), and published by 2K Games. The game was released for Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360 platforms in August 2007; a PlayStation 3 port by Irrational, 2K Marin, 2K Australia and Digital Extremes was released in October 2008, and an OS X port by Feral Interactive in October 2009. A mobile version was developed by IG Fun. The game's concept was developed by Irrational's creative lead, Ken Levine, and was based on the ideas of Objectivism as highlighted by Ayn Rand, while incorporating influences from other authors such as George Orwell. The game is considered a spiritual successor to the System Shock series, which many of Irrational's team including Levine had worked on previously.
BioShock is set in 1960, in which the player guides the protagonist, Jack, after his airplane crashes in the ocean near the bathysphere terminus that leads to the underwater city of Rapture. Built by the business magnate Andrew Ryan, the city was intended to be an isolated utopia, but the discovery of ADAM, a plasmid which grants superhuman powers, initiated the city's turbulent decline. Jack tries to find a way to escape, fighting through hordes of ADAM-obsessed enemies such as the deadly Big Daddies, while engaging with the few sane humans that remain and eventually learning of Rapture's past. The player, as Jack, is able to defeat foes in a number of ways by using weapons, utilizing plasmids that give unique powers and by turning Rapture's own defenses against them. BioShock includes elements of role-playing games, giving the player different approaches in engaging enemies such as by stealth, as well as moral choices of saving or killing characters.
BioShock received critical acclaim and was particularly praised by critics for its morality-based storyline, immersive environment and its unique setting. It received several Game of the Year awards from different media outlets, including from BAFTA, Game Informer, Spike TV] , and X-Play. Since its release a direct sequel has been released, BioShock 2 by 2K Marin, as well as a third game titled BioShock Infinite by Irrational Games.

One of the best games ever made. The story and characters are all great, while the combat is consistent and tactical, while not being too slow.

Bioshock 2 is my absolute favorite out of the three. I finally got around to starting Minerva's Den, 2 years after initially completing the trilogy. And oh boy, it feels good to roam around again in this setting. Maybe Part 2 didn't have THE plot twist like part 1 but to me it improved upon every aspect of the already truly amazing predecessor.

The differences between the bio re-constructors and the vita chamber is: The re-constructors only worked if you had Nanintes (money) left. Made dying a punishment more than a relief. Why this concept got dropped? I dunno. You nailed it again! Top notch review!

Ok so here is my tought... I played the game, and i semi liked it; because: The game setting and design of everything is amazing and since i love to draw (especially steampunk fantasy etc.) i *loved* the setting and design, BUT what i didn't like about it is the repetitiveness in the game like: Got a weapon, go there and collect that, kill a bunch of enemies on the way, go back kill more enemies, learn more about the storie, get a new weapon, go there collect that, kill more enemies, etc... But the game was really good but i never finished really (came to the orphanage and didn't go past that) because i felt bored playing over and over the same thing... *I don't know why i REALLY want to love the game and i do but not that much*

+SeriousGamer753 Oh and the sheer fact that you use the wrench 50% of the time because it is so f***** op...
@EldritchAugur
@EldritchAugur 8 лет назад
+SeriousGamer753 The game unfortunately does just sputter to a halt after Hephaestus. It has such a fantastic build up. Gradually introducing you to the history of rapture and the various gameplay elements and it climaxes with one of the best twists in any video game. But then it just goes on... and on... and on... far past it's prime until you are just bored shitless at the end. It's a shame because the first 2 thirds of the game are so damn amazing. But I agree, the last area of the game in particular, Point Prometheus is where the game goes from mediocre, to just bad. The audio logs disappear into nothing but boring technical details and the architectural design is repetitive and simplistic. It just looses so much steam by going on far longer than it should have. If it was a 6-8 hour game it would have been a masterpiece.

I remember playing this game and being blown away my first time around. Replayed it a few years back and really enjoyed it. It's a shame Ken tried too hard when making BSI; of all the games I was looking forward to in 2013, it was definitely my most hyped game of that year, and I was pretty disappointed when it turned out to be rubbish. Ever consider reviewing Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2? They're a gamecube games, but Dolphin (gamecube\wii emulator) has pretty much got it down, aside from a few problems. The Metroid Prime Trilogy version of the games have some more lag issues, but it fixes some issues with the original game, and you can use the mouse to look around.

When I played this in 09, it was great. When I played Infinite with no improvement in combat mechanics or feel 4 years later, it was underwhelming. That game succeeds primarily by virtue of its atmosphere. But, for its time, Bioshock was an excellent shooter. I still need to play 2.

I prefer system shock 2 over bioshock here's why: - System Shock is hard and makes you think about choices, challenging resource management, scarce health ammo etc. - Never felt challenged in bioshock, no puzzles, plentiful ammo I ended up fighting all big daddies because I was bored - The whole game is pretty much a crazy amusement park but it was a bit sensory overload for me all the crazy splicers, vending machines, little girls, robots just like many modern games it lacked subtlety and became too cartoonish - The story could actually work well as a fun movie

I honestly was very invested in this game, and loved everything about it...I never played System Shock 2 so I don't have a reference for your complaint saying that this is a dumbed down version...but I think that's not fair using comparison to a completely different game that just shares similar features in gameplay style...most developers like to expand on their own signature style into all their games, sequel or not....but anyway all I want to say is...I loved this game...for me it gets full marks

I think this game could benefit to a conversion into the next Unreal Engine that will come after the current one (UE4) in some years because it's a big mess on PC. Between the sounds that don't work 2/3 of the time, the mouse move awfully, etc... Adding new effects/tech could make the game perfect tho (PBR material, new lighting, physics, water shaders, etc...) To this day I don't find any places as unique as Rapture. LOVED the story in this one and loved playing as a big daddy in the 2nd.

The story and the atmosphere overall are absolutely LEGENDARY... The real problem about ALL the Bioshock serie is the fact that once you pass a certain point they all crank up the difficulty by making the enemies bullshit bullet sponges. Moreover (especially in the first one), most of the plasmids just felt completely useless or redundant.

I must say, I love this game for atmosphere and story, but some of the gameplay elements... ugh. I don't see the point in praising what has already been praised to death - what Bioshock does well, it really does exceptionally well - atmosphere, game's world, plot - all of this is bloody awesome. But there are some things that stain this great picture. First of all - gunplay - I found it... jerky. The combat itself is mechanically fine and refined well enough - combos of weapons and plasmids, different ammo types and so on. However, the use of the weapons feels really off to me for some reason. It is something with a feedback - recoil feels jerky and unnatural, it feels... mechanical. It almost feels unfinished in some aspects. It may sounds like a minor complaint, but in a game where you ARE going to shoot a lot, it builds up. Some people might say that this game is not really about a combat, but I call bullshit on that - because combat is exactly what you are doing for the majority of time. There is no excuse, it should be spot on, but it isn't, to the point it is immersion-breaking at times. The whole hacking system - the minigame itself is fine for first couple of times, but takes simply too long, given how often do you have to perform it. It is the funny thing, because Bioshock 2 did those two elements far better, while being far inferior in terms of plot. While it does balance out a bit, I'd say Bioshock 1 is still a superior game by far, if for the story alone. Also - there is the camera mechanic - I do not like it. For the game really based on immersion, it feels a bit too gamey for my taste. Still, an in all Bioshock is absolutely amazing. Although I don't consider it to be this flawless gem that you can't criticise. It has flaws, some of them serious, but they still do not overshadow the overall experience.

Excellent points, one thing that really bothered me were the limitations on how much ammo or money you could carry at a given time. Sure, let me pull out this grenade launcher and reload it with the 6 mines max I'm allowed to carry, after switching from a pistol to a sub-machine gun to a shotgun to a literal crossbow.

Vita chambers have no loss in resources and no need to activate them. Disabling them on consoles forces players to wait upwards of 50 seconds on PS3 to load. Would have been better to copy SS2 wholesale.

I agree, Bioshock 1 trumps over 2 in a lot of ways: it's story, gameplay, characters, environments, scripted events, music choice (I love the 40's-50's era of music), weapons, and overall presentation. Bioshock 2 was great... but I beat it in one day... and I don't even recall it very well... something with large, muscled-up gorillas and a golf club joke? I... really couldn't tell you... and the multiplayer... fuck that to high hell... and then some... I never played Infinite, mainly from my experience with 2, but, Bioshock will always be one of my favorites games to have ever graced the planet, and I can still boot it up and smile and know every line of dialogue, every jump-scare, and every plasmid/tonic. I still get a smirk every time I think of when I'd use telekinesis on a bunch of cigarettes and kill the character off by chain-smoking a hundred packs at once, scream "FUCK YOURSELF WITH BEES AND FIRE!", or when I'd guzzle down a thousand snack cakes out of a dead, burn-out's body with glee... Bioshock... no other game can really top that special kind of place in my heart, even if it's a linear and short game... Now... would you kindly go and download the game?

With STALKER I consider this as best game of the last 10 years, due to the atmosphere and the fantastic underwater city in the 1920's style. The fps and shooting isn't as good. I regularly ran out of ammo due to the tough opposition. I resorted to using the wrench which can be upgraded as well. All in all an absolute recommendation but I suppose by now that everyone has already played it.

Please review Deus Ex Invisible War. People often call it one of the most over-simplified games in history

I feel that gameplay wise Bioshock 2 was the best one in that respect, it ironed out a lot of the issues, hacking is quicker but but also easier to fuck up, the weapons are better, the melee combat isn't atrocious and I found the level design just a bit better, plus big daddy fights feel like duels to the death rather than a desperate chaotic mess and the research is improved out the arse. though the story can go fuck itself with Bouncer drill, Bioshock 1 definitely has the best story out of all three

A simple suggestion pal.... If you review a game which is a franchise, please review all of them.

i dont think the simplification of bioshock has anything to do with consoles I think its just trying to reach a wider audience to sell more copys look at the souls series its mosty a console series with the first being ps3,the 2nd being ported to pc and bloodborne being only on ps4 u don't need to blame consoles blame publishers or developers

I remember just using the enrage plasmid all the way through. I really do hate the vita chambers because it felt like I was cheating. I disabled it.

Gggman what do you think of Bioshock 2? I played it after getting it at discount having never played bioshock 1. I just couldn't get into it, just didn't feel good as a shooter. After watching your review I'm interested in giving the original a go but would like to know how you think the two compare.

+Larry I really liked it, even more than the first in some ways.

Thanks mate, I think i'm gonna get the original, regardless of how I felt with number 2. Certain things like no reg health and limited ammo picks ups frustrated me back then, but I have gone back and am playing some classic FPS and love the challenge. Also looking forward to the new Doom when at first I wasn't due to the above. Love your reviews, keep up the good work.

SHAWKLAN 27 That's a fairly common belief. Bioshock 2 is much better gameplay wise than Bioshock 1 I think.

Bioshock 2 was a superior game in all ways but story, but I still think the approach they took with the story was quite smart. Bioshock 1 was all about discovering Rapture, so naturally yo can't just repeat that for the sequel. You know Rapture by now. You can't be another silent explorer trapped in crazy town. So they did the next best thing and gave you a more personal stake in events. It's a revenge story, and one where you actually have a reason to be silent. That, and the gameplay was just better. More skills, more enemies, streamlined hacking, and better researching.

+Sabbat-X I disagree. I think bioshock 1 weapon progression and level design is better.

After playing through Bioshock 1 too many times to count, discovering things I missed almost every time, and being pissed at the bugged 360's "Brass Balls" achievement not unlocking after several attempts and possible work arounds, I can safely say no game has intrigued me more than this game, even to this day. Bioshock 2, I couldn't get in to. The teaser trailer excited me, the eventual gameplay basically bored me. I went through it not really caring about what was going on, and found the flashbacks from Elanor somewhat cringey. It felt like a game I needed to play rather than wanted to play. But, i've yet to try it again, and i'm keen on doing so.

I really enjoyed the first game. Its universe, atmosphere and visuals....but the main plot itself.... When you figure out the coming "twists" (yes, I did figure it out ; most probably because I already saw similar stories in other medias) in the two first hours of the game, having them being focused on for god knows how long many minutes as if it was something "incredible" was quite annoying. Then if the game indeed had a dark universe, it completely failed at the horror part, for me. I could sense the moments that were supposed to spook me but I couldn't care less. As for the second game, it was even more predictable and felt more like an extension rather than a sequel. Still, I really enjoyed the two games. Now I have to try Infinite. PS : I love the humming (or whatever) of the Big Daddys.

guys i always wondered , does this game and its sequel Bioshock 2 have new game + ? I've beat them already and can't find the option to do that.

If i remember correctly new game plus for bioshock 1 was exclusive to the PS3 version until the recent remaster, now its available on pc and both the consoles. Not sure about bioshock 2 since ive havent played it in a very long time but i think it does have new game plus.

I always hypnotize one Big Daddy then go pick a fight with another one. It's really fun watching 2 Big Daddy killing each other. On other note, Insect Swarm is very effective plasmid. It can stun, damages multi splicers and turn their corpses in booby trap for more swarms.

@CentsTwo
@CentsTwo 10 лет назад
No, I found that too. Big fan of the game, but that just made it feel draggy at the end especially. That's when you have to get creative and think of novel ways of combating enemies as you fetch items so it sort of feels less tedious.
@likuytfd
@likuytfd 7 лет назад
There's so much padding towards the end it really dragged down the enjoyment of the game for me.
