🙏Thanks, Jan and Matt, for sharing your story and making metabolic psychiatry happen by supporting research and education in the field. THIS IS GOING TO BE HUGE! 🏆

I agree. More research, education, and funding is needed in the mental health field and with the growing mental health crisis in our world today. It is important to raise awareness and share our stories. We need to know we're not alone and there is hope. Educated and informed parents are the best advocate for their kids and early detection and intervention is key to long term success. If a parent can identify mental health and addiction concerns early on and seek support and treatment, then the child has a chance to have the condition addressed and move forward in their lives. This is the best gift for both the parent and loved one.

My dream is also to found a treatment center that can pull all of the recovery pieces together for people who are suffering from chronic mental health issues. So much support is needed for this huge underserved population.

What a great idea. I also wanted to dreamt of something similar if I ever get my own act together. With navigators & treatment all in house so that you dont have to contact so many diff doctors to get on the same team- and all in house like a rehab for bipolar. So much support is needed not to mention all of the access to resources for such a vulnerable population. I wish they could have such treatment clubhouses around. Almost like Fountain House + Charley's house but with psychiatrists, nutritionist, therapists, coaches, peers, mentors all in house. Because after you save your life you have to figure out how to live a life now- get a job- basic self care, finances, adulting. Because so many years you spend ill and you dont know how to function away from the illness. Just a pipe dream. That's if you're lucky enough to not become a statistic... and stay safe until that point. *Hoping*

I completely agree. I love that vision too. I've served as a psychiatric RN, in the conventional system for over 17+ years and I can attest directly to that statement about the "huge underserved population." I've witnessed so many people in deep suffering, and much of it is needless. This community and the information shared here is a beacon of light in the sea of human suffering. We need more of it. I believe it is possible to start changing the system one person, one step at a time. We're all on a journey in supporting each other and improving the function of our brains and bodies. Mental health is not something that is important only to those who struggle, but to every person who has the gift of a brain and body. It matters to all of us. The journey to wholeness though is not for the faint of heart, and it is not easily or readily achieved or shared. It is a profound, life changing experience. There's deep transformation and shifting and changing of all that we are and our potential to be more. Life is a beautiful miracle that we're living in these times where we can explore, learn, and grow. We do have the ability to change our brain and our life, and Jan and Matt's story is an absolute testament to that.

Another area of study should be how brain injuries impact brain metabolism. I predict the reason bipolar kicks in by the late teens, is that the brain gets shittier and shittier at metabolizing carbohydrates as we age. As the brain starts sputtering on carbs, behavioral symptoms start to ramp up. The bipolar under fueled brain can't navigate normal stressors little on major stressors. I went psychotic from stressors I couldn't control. I lived like a hermit as a way of survival because I didn't know what I was dealing with. With cancel culture and basic lack of empathy and critical thinking this is a horrible time to have mental illness. Good luck to all riding this beast. Change the fuel so the beast can't rule.....and 100 percent relate to Matt being frustrated with the focus being on emotions. It's like giving psychotherapy to a broken leg hoping it fixes it. It's embarrassing. And shame on science for missing the link

We started having issues with our daughter after second concussion… we are still struggling to get her well. She’s so talented and smart, it makes me so frustrated but this gives me hope. We are trying to get an appt. With Mayo Clinic which is in our state, I wonder how much they will know about keto and metabolic interventions for her. We want more help!

@@roseskavnak6671 I'm sorry she's going through concussion issues. They are really awful but do get better. Hopefully dietary changes help expedite her recovery. Having support and keeping her from retreating into negative loops and destructive behavior is huge. Things that are soothing in nature are extra helpful when the brain is out of sorts. Hope she recovers quickly and has a good quality of life.

Really good point. I have also wondered about the cumulative effects of improper diet over a period of time. We do see many mental health and substance use disorders starting to ramp up in the teen years. The brain is still developing at this stage and it is a very stressful time, add to that bad diet, illicit substances, inadequate sleep, psychiatric medications, brain injury and it becomes extremely complex. Your self awareness around your situation, and the current cultural land escape is spot on. We have these Brains that have evolved over millions of years, and we assign them menial tasks for the most part. We do not use them for critical thinking or to access higher consciousness. We're certainly not using them to solve many of the problems we face today, such as mental illness. So many professionals in the conventional medical and psychiatric system downplay the importance of nutrition. They don't have any training in this matter and that is a huge disadvantage. We have to recognize the precursor for our very bodies, brains, and bodily chemicals is food. Food can really be medicine and it can also be a poison. Changing the fuel is absolutely critical. What improvements have you noticed for yourself? For how long have you been changing the fuel?

@@roseskavnak6671 It is incredibly difficult to watch your child struggling and in pain. It is one of the most challenging as aspect of being a parent. She's lucky to have parents who love her dearly. How old is your daughter? Keto and metabolic interventions are safe for most people, but not usually recommended for children under 18 years old. Although, it can still help to clean up the diet on a general basis, not necessarily following a strict keto regimen. Rest, reducing stress, being in nature, using dark therapy for proper sleep, decreased stimulation can all be beneficial and there are other holistic lifestyle interventions that can be implemented. It takes time to recover from concussions. Our brains are resilient and powerful. There is hope. How is she doing now?

It does take a lot of courage to share something this vulnerable and so valuable at the same time. I've just started sharing my story publicly of overcoming an antidepressant induced bipolar disorder through a holistic approach, including the ketogenic diet and it feels incredibly uncomfortable. I feel totally exposed but I know there are so many people who are struggling and need to hear many stories and know they are not alone and there is no shame. People desperately need to have hope.

Do they know that there are 13 randomised controlled trials and over a century of clinical use showing that ketogenic diet works for epilepsy? And that we are treated with drugs used in epilepsy? Maybe this will help to open their mind a bit!
@NeseretBemient
@NeseretBemient 7 месяцев назад
That is a brilliant question! I have thought about it for a long time, serving in the conventional mental health system as a psychiatric RN. I've had the privilege of working within interdisciplinary teams, with doctors, psychologists, psychiatrist and they absolutely need a lot of education around the topic of nutrition. Our industry claims to treat the brain, but we rarely look at it, and we know the precursor for our energy, cell functioning, our brain chemicals, and every fiber of our being comes from food. Food is the fuel all of these processes in our body require for proper functioning. How can we dismiss this as unimportant? Would you say that about putting gas in your car? It's just not necessary, it doesn't matter. Even the electric cars have to be charged! All these professionals, looking after human beings with brain and bodies, who are in a position of authority need to learn about nutrition. It should be a requirement, not an option. However, there is very little attention paid to nutrition in medical schools, and in many health care professions. Many health care professionals are incredibly unhealthy themselves, due to the stress of their jobs and being uninformed. How can you be offering people advice on health and wellness, when you're not walking your talk? Or have knowledge or lived experience of nutrition? I would recommend "Brain Energy by Christopher Palmer, MD" for your physician. You've started the conversation and that's doing a lot. Be willing to continue to engage in conversation with your doctor and provide education to them. It is essential to engage in collaborative attitude in your relationship with those in your circle of care. That piece is a two way street, and decisions need to be made taking everyone's perspective in to consideration. Do you have additional support for yourself besides your family physician? Perhaps someone who understand the intricate holistic approach to health and wellness as well as the ketogenic diet? We can never have too much support. Please, surround yourself with as much support as you can. You're ahead of the game. You're doing very well.

@@bipolarcast1133 Agree. As well as anecdotal stories like yours. Human beings tend to resist change in the beginning, and it is very messy in the middle, but gorgeous in the end. Transformation is not an overnight process. Patience is needed and required on this journey.

Ok, I haven't finished watching, so may have something more to add later, but want to say two things so far, but I'll preface them by saying I like these people and think it's great the work they're doing. Ok, so firstly, why did Christopher Palmer work with Matt pro bono when Matt's parents are billionaires? Wouldn't it be nicer if the pro bono appointments would have been instead given to someone who otherwise wouldn't be able to afford this care? Maybe I'm missing something here...? Secondly, I'm curious why he does the bright light early in the day. I've read a couple times online that that might push a bipolar person into mania/hypomania and that for bipolar people the bright light should be between about lunchtime and 2pm, whereas for other people morning is usually recommended. Anyway, it obviously works for him to do it at this time, but would be good to look into this and note that for some (most?) bipolar people it might be better to do that sun/lightbox exposure midday. Thanks

Money can't buy health. You can have a billon dollar in the bank and if you're diagnosed with pancreatic cancer like Steve Jobs, and told to "get your affairs in order", then that money doesn't really mean much. Every human being is unique and they deserve to be relieved of their suffering regardless of their financial status. And now, we have Matt's story to share with the world, which in turn gives hope to thousands, and maybe millions. Nothing is wasted. Dr. Palmer is a phenomenal human being and mental health professional, and his book and his life's work is transforming the field of psychiatry. As a psychiatric RN for 17+years, I'm so grateful to have crossed paths with Jan and Matt's story and Dr. Palmer's work. What a gift and a blessing!
