Birchbark is one of the best tinders out there. Burns hot and fast, does not decay as quick as wood and other resources and is readily available in most forests in the northern hemisphere. It's really a great tinder source to use.

Here in Urals, Russia it its everywhere and i find it to be the best type of tinders for sure. It is also very useful as it repells mosquitoes that can cause a lot of troubles especially in the swampy areas.

Great idea! I’ve struggled for some time with the concept of using birch bark as a tinder source with a Ferro rod. I’ve known there must be some way to make it work but didn’t think of simply grinding it down, this creating fine shavings with lots of surface area, in order to make it work. I live in northern Wisconsin and have this everywhere in the woods...probably more abundant than any tinder source. Now I know how to make it catch a spark or ember and to make it work as a tinder source! Thanks mate!

I like to use the thicker bark more than the thin stuff, i use it almost like a reusable match. I scrape from the inside and use a spark to create a flame which i then use to light feather sticks. I can then dab out the bark and put it away to be used again. This way i can make the bark last alot longer. If the conditions are bad i can always use it less sparingly.

I found that the curl works in my favor once I have established first ignition. I have had plenty of fires where the curl will knock over the structure of the fire but I think that comes down to preference as well :)

What works best is to not waste the bark. You don't need it to build a fire. The dust work perfectly for that. Burning a large piece of bark is just being wasteful. And it's "right", not "rite". American public school, "rite"?
