I started this year's filming season quite nicely: a singing white-spotted bluethroat. A few older shots of this bird were already sitting in my archive ( • Bird sounds - White-sp... ), but all the time my greedy eyes wanted to improve them. You know - the bird across the whole frame, diffused light, blurry background and all that. So in mid-April I grabbed my equipment along with my friend Dušan, and we went to check if a bluethroat was singing again at my tried and true place.
He did. So I filmed him. Sorry, but that's pretty much the end of the story. That morning simply went as planned and nothing dramatic or otherwise worthy of telling actually happened. At most, you can amuse yourself by watching the funny failed shot that I showed you back in spring ( • You Silly Bird, Wait f... ).
Since the bluethroat was cooperating so nicely, I went to see him again, about a week later. However, as is a good habit in nature, the second time the maestro ostentatiously ignored me and sang in the distance out of camera range. He would not have been heard anyway, because in the meantime the sedge warblers arrived from the warm regions, whose crazy loud calls practically drowned out the bluethroat‘s gentle chirping.
In the Czech Republic we have two bluethroat subspecies - the white-spotted bluethroat and the red-spotted bluethroat. The red-spotted one sings only high in the Krkonoše Mountains and its nesting there has always been an ornithological sensation. The white-spotted bluethroat, on the other hand, seeks dense reed stands at lower elevations and is most often found on the banks of large ponds. With its bright throat, it is almost kitschily beautiful and possesses one of the richest song repertoires in our nature. During its lifetime it learns the songs of other birds, and then composes its own performances from these. It is therefore often quite difficult to distinguish which bird is actually calling at the pond. Nevertheless, the bluethroat‘s singing contains one typical expression, which I personally like the most and by which I can safely recognize it - it often inserts a sound that sounds a bit like a muffled sizzle of electricity. See if you can hear it in the video 😊
