The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

This is sheer power, technique and grace on display, the way the divas of the past did it. Brava La Nilsson!

She and the orchestra didnt sync for the wholw vid tho'. I feel like she's trying to sabotage her own show by showing how bad the conductors can't follow the singer. Her voice as always....a goddess's...
@ER1CwC
@ER1CwC 3 месяца назад
@@mubaraksenju7521 It's hard to be in sync in those conditions. Who knows where the orchestra is located and whether the conductor can even see her, and vice versa. Also, the orchestra barely knows its music. So many mistakes.

Turandot was revived especially for the divine Birgit. Listeners can see the result of her Wagnerian training. Nothing is beyond her apparently effortless technique.

She is beyond incredible!! A secure technique, floods of free flowing sound, and nerves of steel, even with the rather uncomfortable tempi and her dress not cooperating with her.

I've always been a Callas fan, and always will. She's my absolute favorite singer of all time. BUT...NO ONE, NOT EVEN CALLAS, can compete with Nilsson in the role of Turandot!
@johninman7545

That's saying something. Callas was best at dark characters
@artdanks4846
@artdanks4846 10 месяцев назад
@johninman7545 Very true! And I DO love her Turandot. But the main reason I still prefer Nilsson's is because she has that steely-cold sound to her voice that is perfect for this role. Callas had that too, but I could always still hear the depth, warmth and beauty in her tones. Nilsson sang this role like a block of ice, which I think this role demands.

I agree with you. Birgit had an incredible voice and was a really fine singer. In her prime years, she could make the hairs raise on your arms. I didn’t mean to be critical, maybe just a typo, but in the Romance languages there are definite vowel and spelling changes that differentiate between feminine and masculine. That is just how the languages work!

@@stephenschmall9029 It's okay, it wasn't a typo, I corrected it after you brought it to my attention. I appreciate being corrected. I attended a 4 day masterclass when she was recently retired. One evening I sat almost directly behind her for some gala. Her back was very strong, even then. Different technique but I'm reminded of Vickers, whose powerful build was obviously an asset in his singing
