Birman Cat VS. Ragdoll Cat.
What are the differences between these two cat breeds?
Birman communicates in a soft voice, mainly to remind you that perhaps it’s time for dinner or maybe for a nice cuddle on the sofa. With positive reinforcement, Ragdoll cats learn quickly and can pick up tricks as well as good behaviors such as using a scratching post. The Ragdoll cat is an all-around best buddy to just about everyone. They love their human families and will get along with other pets fairly well. Docile, sweet, and happy to relax for a good cuddle session, the loving Ragdoll will even greet their humans at the door when they come home. If you’re looking for a companion, you can’t find a much better choice than one of these easygoing felines. Birmans typically weigh 6 to 12 pounds. Female ragdolls usually weigh 10 to 15 pounds, and some males weigh more than 20 pounds.
If you like the pointed pattern of the Siamese but not the only voice, a Birman might be the cat for you. He is a docile, quiet cat who loves people and will follow them from room to room. Expect the Birman to want to be involved in what you’re doing, and be grateful that he’s not as bossy as the Siamese. Docile doesn’t mean dumb. The Birman is a smart cat and, of course, curious.
He likes to explore his environment and has been known to get trapped underneath floors that are being replaced or to accidentally, maybe on purpose, go for a ride on top of a car. It’s a good idea to always keep tabs on where he is. He communicates in a soft voice, mainly to remind you that perhaps it’s time for dinner or maybe for a nice cuddle on the sofa. He enjoys being held and will relax in your arms like a furry baby.
Unlike many cats, Ragdolls are notable for collapsing into the arms of anyone who holds them, even if they are cradled on their back. They love their people, greeting them at the door, following them around the house, and leaping into a lap or snuggling in bed whenever given the chance. They often learn to come when called or to retrieve toys that are thrown for them. The word most often used to describe them is docile, but that doesn’t mean they are inactive. They like to play with toys and enter into any family activities.
With positive reinforcement in the form of praise and food rewards when they do something you like, Ragdolls learn quickly and can pick up tricks as well as good behaviors such as using a scratching post. They remind you of mealtime or ask for petting but are not excessively vocal. Ragdolls have nice manners and are easy to live with. You will find a Ragdoll on your sofa or bed, but generally not much higher than that. He prefers to stay on the same level with his people rather than the highest point in a room.
The Birman has a silky, medium-length coat in the pointed pattern of the Siamese, meaning that the color is darker on the face, ears, legs, and tail, a broad, rounded head topped with medium-size ears, bright blue eyes that give him a sweet expression, and four white feet that give him the appearance of wearing little white mittens. This is a medium-size to large cat with a stocky, powerful body that belies his gentle demeanor. The medium-long to long coat has a silky texture and little undercoat, which means that it rarely mats. It forms a heavy ruff around the neck and is wavy on the belly.
Ragdolls stand out for their large size, semi-long coat in a pointed pattern, and sparkling blue eyes. They are among the largest of the domesticated cats, with some males weighing in at 20 pounds or more. A Ragdoll has a light-colored body with a darker face, legs, tail, and ears. He comes in three patterns, mitted and bicolor, both of which have white, and colorpoint, which has no white. Ragdolls don’t reach their full size and coat development until they are three to four years old.

As a lucky owner, or should I say lucky to be owned by 3 beautiful Birmans , the answer is of course the Birman. But let's also admit that the ragdol is a lovely cat,

@@tangofoxtrot40 shedding is no problem but regular brushing is a good idea. As for temperament, well t hey are wonderful, so full of character and very talkative! And yes they are fine left alone, but be aware that they get deep under your skin and you will find you don't want to be away from them longer than you have to.

I love my Birman cats. I grew up with a beautiful lilac point named Cooper and he was just precious. So loving, loyal, friendly, calm and playful. He slept beside me every night (not against me though). Followed me like a dog. Comforted me when I needed comfort. I remember a time I was crying against my bed with my head down and he pawed my head and meowed his beautiful unique Birman cat meow while looking into my eyes. He was the most wonderful blessing for me growing up. Now I have another Birman (a beautiful red lynx), and two other cats, all less than 3 years old... I highly recommend Birman cats!

I'm researching different cat breeds. Can you please tell me if you're B IRM AN Was healthy? Any type of illnesses? Also, pretty quiet. My research tells me that these expensive pure bread cast tend to Have health issues which scares me. Especially the scottish fold cats! Oh, How about the hair? Much shedding?
@denisev.2525

@@ricknowak4582 My first Birman Cooper never had any health issues except for mild allergies where he'd sneeze occasionally, I think over the summer time. He was as healthy as can be until he was about 16.5 and I was treating him for fleas with Hertz (or Hartz) flea medicine. He died at 17 and had seizures and declined so fast. There were reports of that brand poisoning pets and cases of some dying. Honestly, I didn't know cats could have health issues like people have until I got my current cats... Cooper was also a quiet angelic-like spirit. Never was destructive, never clawed at anything but his scratching post. He was the perfect cat and had such a beautiful meow that I remember he'd occasionally use, like if he was concerned about me. Birmans are very empathetic, calm, loyal and loving cats. He was the perfect cat - though not until we brought him home when he was about 2 years old. Before that he got into fights with my Grandma's other cats and he seemed scared there. But one day he imprinted on me and came out and laid on my lap (which he'd never done before) and then he was my cat after that. Birmans are supposed to be generally healthy cat breeds. I don't know why some sources can say they're not. My current Birman Sammy is only 2 years old, he's a sweet cat too. I have two other cats that he gets along with and he is a silly character. He's a little awnry sometimes jumping on the countertop but when I tell him no he gets off and gives me puppy dog eyes, knowing he did something wrong... He got gingivitis before he was a year old and I had to have him get them cleaned by surgery at the vet. But he's been fine since. I just brush his teeth every night, along with my two other cats, which they love, especially him. My other two cats aren't Birmans. I think my girl cat is a Siamese mix, she looks like a Ragdoll/Turkish Angora, and my other boy cat is a Tabby, with a Serengeti ancestor (all Tabby's that look like him are). They're also beautiful and unique souls. We were blessed because they follow me around and like to cuddle too like my Birman. I got the girl cat, Rose, first and it was like love at first sight. She made me her person and the two hour drive home she was on my lap, licking me, and being so sweet. She'd never been an indoor cat and was scared when I came to get her because she was inside a house, but after a few minutes she came out, let me hold her and I brought her home. I stayed with her majority of the day for a few days in the laundry room and when it came to let her explore I was so surprised to not see her claw at anything or do something she shouldn't. I didn't know a non-Birman could be as sweet and gentle as her. She changed my mind about Birmans being the most precious cats. But I will always love Birmans because of my Cooper, and I plan to always have at least one for the rest of my life. They are precious cats but you can find other good cats too. Birmans are generally healthy, sweet, loving, intelligent, fun, funny and unique. They don't shed that much because they don't have an undercoat. They're partially hypoallergenic. You can read my first post a little more if you're interested to know more. Ragdolls are known to be similar to Birmans, but I don't know if they're known to bond with someone as much as the Birman does. My Grandmother always had Ragdolls. They had longer fur but I don't really remember bonding with any of them. They also had health issues when they got older. She rescued one that had inverted eye lashes. I think sometimes it depends on the cat Breeder, if they keep things clean, feed them healthy food and such. By the way, I found out the hard way that cats go through their terrible twos too. But I think it's like 1-2 years old that they do. My Tabby gave me a headache for quite a while in that time. My Birman too at that age was a little fiesty. So keep that in mind if you get a cat they age. Good luck with your research!

@denisev.2525 Thanks so much for your immediate reply! But I was shocked you were using flea medicine for your cat I take care of some Outdoor feral cats and a few let me hold them. And I have a flea comb and come out the fleas. I would never think of putting any kind of flea medicine on cats or any animal. It's toxic! You Have to be very careful when applying that medicine. The Cats slow down and R dull for a few days Because it goes in the blood system.. Not good. Well, That's just my opinion. I remember one girl put a flea color on one of the cats, and the cat was so slow and LETHARGIC I thought she was dying or sick . I immediately took off the collar and within a two days she was normal! Now that's a fact.

4:09 yes our Ragdoll has the ears set higher and are also long / tall, I like them like. Otherwise all the affectionate following you form room to room and loves being part of conversation, calm rather than docile, and intelligent. I have trained him to give the paw before eating and he now occasionally uses it as a messaging cue for food when he is really hungry. Loves people and greets everyone who visits and on Cat Walkies who we cross, instantly breaking the ice. Never scratched anyone, a very polite cat. He does not like to be picked up but tolerates it. He does not sit in our laps, I suspect he gets hot with all that fur, as he will sit in bowl on your lap. You must brush everyday with a long comb or else the home becomes saturated with hairs. There are a lot of hairs anyway but without brushing its in every corner and floats around like dust. After brushing he looks gorgeous. Scratches his horizontal scratcher, not the furniture or carpet. Cat Walkies (on quiet roads, paths only!) are great fun, albeit somewhat stressful when you cross another dog or cat, but he knows to go and hide until the danger has passed, then he joins me again to continue.

Yes, You mentioned that the Ragdoll with all that hair would be hot. Well, I take care of outside feral cats and a few of them are very long haired cats and I live in florida. Right now, the heat index is about a 110°. (Its JULY) And these cats do not appear To be uncomfortable! I don't get it either.. The friendliest one has VERY , very long hair like a Himalayan. And when I pick him up, there's no hair on my shirt, none None! That means I suppose that they are o k in the heat Cause otherwise they would be ....SHEDDING like mad! Ha.

I would go for the Birman but you would need 2 for they are prone to separation anxiety. Besides that although they have long hair they do not have an undercoat and are considered to be low maintenance. Everything you asked for you will find in this cat. Most purebred Velcro cats need a little buddy though especially if you are out of the house for more than 4 hours at a time. They are the #1 cat in France and extremely popular in Europe and Asia. They will love you unconditionally. Someone mentioned the Persian; unless if you want to give them a daily intense brushing stay away for their grooming needs are intense. Ragdolls are lovely too but much larger; quality Birmans are not easy to find though in North America so beware of backyard breeders for you might end up with a mix of something or another that they will try to pass off as a Birman. A true Birman Ragdoll mix would also be a great choice but again I would recommend 2 but both of the same sex though; I personally would say get 2 males of any of the above mentioned Velcro breeds; they are usually known to be more affectionate but this is not to diminish the fact that the females of these breeds make wonderful companions too. You will have to of course neuter/spay them (responsible breeders of purebred usually will make you sign a no breeding contract anyways) and please do not declaw them. A good cat tree or two with several scratching posts plus quality interactive toys around your house or condo would be just fine to keep them and you happy. I would personally feed them a high protein low carb diet for they are all prone to gaining weight and make sure to have at least one good sized, clean and low dust liter box per floor.

I own a Birman boy and he is fine on his own. Most cats should be ok tbh. Of course you shouldn’t leave them alone for too long, that goes with any pet and I know he would defo prefer being with me than by himself as he is a social boy but he is totally fine by himself, he just sleeps until I get back.

I have a brother & sister, now 15, from a registered breeder. Grooming is not as easy as the video states. It doesn't take long but you do need to run a steel comb thru their coat at least 3 times a week. Get them used to it as babies. They don't really get matted but I do find the odd knot here & there when I get lazy with the grooming. If you don't keep it up, you'll find clumps of hair all over the place. It gets in every nook & cranny. Even sticks to the walls. I think that's due to the texture being so fine & soft. Be prepared for extra housework. Get them used to the bath as well because you will eventually get a poop accident. As for behavior, they are very sweet little cats. You do have to watch where you step because they like to follow you around. They also like to talk. A lot. But a few minutes of attention & they'll be on their way. They can be a bit clingy at times but not all of them. My boy loves to snuggle but my girl does not. She will sit near you, never on you.

All cats should be indoors since they're an invasive species that aren't native to America and are known to harm local ecosystems (such as killing birds & chipmunks), but especially a Birman or Ragdoll which are very expensive breeds - thousands of dollars worth! I'm not sure why anyone would invest so much money, only to leave the cat outside to be taken or get hurt?
