What goes on inside the mind of a rock-star mathematician? Where does inspiration come from?
With a storyteller’s gift, Cédric Villani takes us on a mesmerizing journey as he wrestles with a new theorem that will win him the most coveted prize in mathematics. Along the way he encounters obstacles and setbacks, losses of faith and even brushes with madness. His story is one of courage and partnership, doubt and anxiety, elation and despair.
We discover how it feels to be obsessed by a theorem during your child’s cello practice and throughout your dreams, why appreciating maths is a bit like watching an episode of Columbo, and how sometimes inspiration only comes from locking yourself away in a dark room to think. Blending science with history, biography with myth, Villani conjures up an inimitable cast of characters including the omnipresent Einstein, mad genius Kurt Godel, and Villani’s personal hero, John Nash.
Birth of a Theorem combines passion and imagination to take us on a fantastical adventure through the beautiful, mysterious world of mathematics.
Math has never seemed so magical or so exciting.

It took me half way through the video to realize that you meant to say "sense". You see, my brain has done the "hard work" of realizing something was wrong, and a "flash" occured half way through the video and sovled your problem. Lol.

Kurt Gödel was not a "mad genius". Kurt Gödel was a serious and important mathematician. Kurt Gödel divided the history of mathematics. Villani did not talk about Gödel. I think he should have. If there is a way to computacionally check if a proof is right, he may well relate it to Gödel and the proof of the two completeness theorems. Anyway I like his bug and his tie. The way he describes a mathematician's daily efforts, the constraints, the failures, the eurekas, the applications of maths, etc is very accurate. I don't think it would be stimulating for new generations. Each mathematician has his own story to tell. Thanks for enviting professor Cédric Villani and posting this.

Exactly, Gödel was the best logical mathematician of the history. And one of the most smarter man in the world.

Dear Cedric Villani, I have a theorem: The complex number i relates change in y due to change in x, implying relation between all pairs of 'cause and effect', as explained in page 217, of Visual Complex Analysis by Tristan Needham, Empiricists held for 300 years that they are independent. Surprising, they do not have a physical relation but a mathematical one. Perhaps a new definition of i. Please comment. (effect) y= i (cause)x.
