A recent remark made by Governor Cuomo in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic was characterized by a misunderstanding of God that is all too common, even among believers.

@@adama5929 No Adam. As a molecular biologist, I will tell you that this is a naturally occurring virus, arising through the laws of Nature. It is NOT synthetic. There is not a whit of verifiable evidence that it was man made and all verifiable evidence is consistent with that conclusion. Typical of the supernaturalist, you rely on conspiracy theories. Your god created this virus, if, as you posit, your god created everything.

@@thomastallis7450 No, Thomas. As a random person on the internet, I will tell you that your words hold no value(Cute, trying the whole 'appeal to authority' schtick). You have not studied the virus; you do not not accept the the reports of viruses being smuggled out of Canada with Chinese scientists being escorted out of the facility and out of the country. You do not accept the information showing various parts of other viruses being present within the makeup up the CCP virus that almost certainly would not occur naturally. No, child; I never said I had a god or am religious so you see, I have not posited anything. Such a silly attempt to divert the true origin of the virus with all signs pointing to the Chinese Communist Party. You really need to stay focused and not imagine words that haven't been spoken. @@adama5929 My good buddy Adam: There exists not a whit of VERIFIABLE evidence that this new virus is anything but a naturally occurring variant. The "evidence" that you cite is specious. Such changes may well have occurred in Nature. You are thoroughly immersed in conspiracy theories. By the way, referring to me disparagingly, rather than providing an analysis of the sequence data (which I've studied thoroughly) is the best evidence that you don't know what you're writing about. I repeat: You have not an iota of VERIFIABLE evidence that this virus did not arise through ordinary, natural recombination of pre-existing viruses. Indeed, all of the sequence data point to a natural origin. See: directorsblog.nih.gov/2020/03/26/genomic-research-points-to-natural-origin-of-covid-19/. Note the author of this citation: Francis Collins himself. Also: www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2020/03/200317175442.htm. As one of my mentors remarked: "In god we trust, all others bring data." Bishop, I watched that press conference, and thought of this excerpt from Thomas Merton's Seven Story Mountain: "People seem to think that it is in some way a proof that no merciful god exists if we have so many wars. On the contrary, consider how in spite of centuries of sin and greed and lust and cruelty and hatred and avarice and oppression and injustice, spawned and bred by the free wills of men, the human race can still recover each time and can produce men and women who overcome evil with good, hatred with love, greed with charity, lust and cruelty with sanctity. How could all this be possible without the merciful love of God pouring out his grace upon us?" I thought about all the people who are losing their incomes to stay home and all the hospital workers who are risking their lives. These are small pictures of ultimate love and self-sacrifice: Jesus.

People blame God for the awful works of man. I think of a line in the movie An Inspector Calls. A man is lying with a prostitute and asks her, "Do you believe in God?" She replies, "Yes". Bach wrote S.D.G. This is from Wikipedia: Soli Deo gloria is a Latin term for Glory to God alone. It has been used by artists like Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frideric Handel, and Christoph Graupner to signify that the work was produced for the sake of praising God. The phrase has become one of the five solae propounded to summarise the Reformers' basic beliefs during the Protestant Reformation. As a doctrine, it means that everything is done for God's glory to the exclusion of mankind's self-glorification and pride. Christians are to be motivated and inspired by God's glory and not their own

In all due respect... I think you have taken governor Como's comment out of context here. I doubt that Governor Como would believe that God isn't in all things. He was simply making the point that peoples behaviour brought down the numbers, and that God didn't do it in a magical vacuum. There was no theological debate here. My wife and I get alot of peace hearing Governor Como speak, because he comes from a place of clear honesty and some genuine humility. I have a hunch he has a strong faith in our God. In His grace.

When I heard Governor Cuomo say that God didn't do that, I kinda froze and thought can he really be that arrogant in a time like this? After all the prayers that have gone up for the sick, the doctors and healthcare workers, the people who make the supplies that keep us safe, and the medications we use to treat these patients. To leave out the great author and finisher of our faith, our healer, and savior God, seemed horrible to me. Then I thought through this crisis, everyone is under tremendous stress, especially the people who are in charge. I had to say a prayer for the Mayor instead of bashing him. He's only human and I think God knows that and is so very forgiving to us. I praise God for all He has done and that things are getting better. I look forward to the day when we can all get back to some sense of normal and this pandemic is finally over. With God's blessings and grace we will.

Ah, here we go again. Governor Cuomo has exhibited more leadership ability in his little finger than Donald Trump has exhibited in a lifetime of lying and obfuscation, including his urging the investigation of the injection of disinfectant into human beings. Let's tear the good bishop's argument to shreds, shall we? 1) The bishop's god is responsible for scientific progress against COVID-19, according to the good bishop; 2) And yet, the bishop's god merely "permits" COVID-19 to kill millions of innocents and must have a "good" purpose in "permitting" these deaths, and therefore the good bishop's god remains all-good and omnipotent; If the good bishop's god is "THE" cause, it must be "THE" cause of both: destruction and cure. This is exactly the argument used in the 14th century to explain the Black Death which took the lives of 60% of all Europeans. It has precisely the same validity then as it does now: ZERO, ZIPPO, ZILCH. I, for one, could never even entertain the notion that such a god exists.

What’s so sad is that the governor is implying that the human race is able to do anything remotely good or decent without God. Can you imagine if God wasn’t a part of the last few months? It is a dreadful thought. Where there is no God, the devil resides. The government is NOT God. Doctors, nurses and all essential workers are doing an amazing job, and God is working through them. God is a part of every good, miraculous event. If God had not been with humanity, where would we be? Left with the devil, of course. Such a ridiculous thing of the governor to say. Thomas Tallis Thomas Tallis Ah, yes, this argument is fairly common. To many it is, understandably, a difficult conundrum to comprehend. How can God allow suffering? Well, there is so much amazing literature on this topic that I can recommend to you, and it might offer another perspective. I will also add, Christ died a gruesome death for us. Catholicism doesn’t run from suffering. Every Apostle (with the exception of John) and many early Christians died a brutal death in the pursuit of spreading the Gospel. Suffering is part of our existence for a reason. Peter was hung on a cross upside down. Paul was beheaded. Andrew was crucified. Thomas was slayed with a sword. Phillip was tortured. Matthew was stabbed to death. James was stoned and clubbed to death. The Blessed Mother had to stand and watch as they put her son through torture and death on the cross. Suffering is nothing new to the Christian experience. In many ways it is the foundation of our faith. As Christ said himself, “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” This is our faith. It isn’t a vacation. It isn’t always fun. It’s difficult, painful and trying. Adam and Eve chose sin over God. Humanity chooses sin over God, daily. We had paradise. We chose something different. We chose sin, and that got us here. However, despite our ignorance and lack of faith, God gives us mercy. Christ was sent to free us from this prison of sin we sent ourselves to. Through the tragedy that human dysfunction created, God unfolded a miraculous plan. As St Augustine said, “God would not allow any evil in his works, unless in his omnipotence and goodness, as the Supreme Good, he is able to bring forth good out of evil”. The Coronavirus has come, and it has created much pain and suffering. Through this pain and through this suffering God has been with us. Our existence is a painful one at times, but we can turn to the Apostles and to Christ who all suffered extraordinary deaths. We get the impeccable opportunity to pick up our crosses with them, and live and die in the grace of God’s everlasting love. Resilience is only obtained through hardship. Compassion is only experienced through hardship. It is a concept nobody wants to initially accept. Suffering, willingly and humbly for God is not easy. However, I’d rather suffer for and with God, than on my own with the devil himself. Below are some great books on the topic. If you’re open to some new ideas that will grant you insight into the Catholic perspective on suffering. In the meantime, I pray for your health and safety during these difficult times. God Bless, you! ❤️ “The Consolation of Philosophy: Ignatius Critical Editions”- Boethius “On the Christian Meaning of Human Suffering Anniversary Edition” - Pope John Paul II “The Problem of Pain” - C.S Lewis “Why Does God Permit Evil?”- Bruno Webb “When God is Silent”- Luis Maria Martinez

@@gretchenb5735 And Gretchen, not a single one of those arguments is compelling because they fail to address the fundamental, ironic, and deep contradiction inherent to this conundrum. I, for one, adamantly and thoroughly reject such a god as one unworthy of my worship.

Thomas Tallis Well, I think I did answer the question, but I think there are just fundamental disagreements we have that will prohibit us from reaching an agreement. Which it totally fine! Free will is a beautiful thing. I just want to reiterate one thing. It is fundamental to my belief, the Christian faith, and to my argument, that human beings choose suffering and have chose suffering over God. What I think you are missing is that we had paradise. We had that perfect existence you are saying God should give us. We had it in the garden of Eden. We rejected it. We chose sin. We chose suffering. We chose the devil. We chose to believe we could be God. We still do all of the time! Now our world is riddled with suffering, because of us, not God. This same God loves us, despite our sinful nature. He sent Christ to die for us. We are undeserving, and yet, He still loves us. He gave us redemption through Christ. I welcome you to do more research on the topic because your argument is as old as the Christian faith itself, and there are so many amazing scholars that will offer you insight into the Christian perspective on suffering, and why it exists in the first place.

@@gretchenb5735 Fundamental disagreement? Naw. Fundamental difference in approach to a conclusion? Yes. Again, the chain of assertions that I make is clear: 1) The good Bishop Barron says that his god is "the first and only cause" of everything; 2) The COVID-19 disease exists; 3) Therefore, everything that results from COVID-19 is "contingent" that is the result of the good Bishop's first cause, viz. his god. Now you can argue with reams of pages that COVID-19 is a good thing, that people deserve to die from it, that some ancient, never-existent human chose "suffering" (yeah right!), and on and on and on and on. Well, Caleb, since the good Bishop Barron won't respond to my query, perhaps you will explain the conundrum that I have? Namely: 1) The good Bishop says that his god is all-good and all-powerful; 2) The good Bishop says that his god is the "first cause" that is the cause of EVERYTHING (emphasis mine); 3) The good Bishop objects to the good Governor Cuomo denying that any god was involved in our success in dealing with this deadly virus; 4) The good Bishop says that his god was the real cause of our success; and yet 5) The good Bishop fails to address the ultimate (FIRST CAUSE???) of said virus, namely, his god; 6) And the good Bishop fails to acknowledge that said god is therefore monstrous for creating a virus that will kill millions of innocents throughout the world. This is my conundrum. Either the good Bishop's god is the cause of BOTH the virus and its cure, or the good Bishop's god is the cause of NEITHER. If it is the former, the good Bishop's god is a monstrous entity, utterly unworthy of my worship.

Help me understand please: if God’s existence in all things makes the flattening curve ascribable to God’s grace and it is through God that all things are possible, then is the presence of the problem, in this case Covid 19, not also ascribable to God? I struggle with this, in that God’s hand is present in all things, so it is through His grace that this is possible, is it not also through Him that we are struggling with this as well? Is this similar to the Jewish struggle against the God of the Old Testament? The argument against Cuomos statement seems a double edged sword that I dislike.

DEAR BISHOP ROBERT, Thank you for your many clarities, for the wonderful way you bring our faith to coherence - As a theologian myself practicing among Catholic university students, I have for the past 40 years labored to offer the beauty, depth and vision of the Catholic faith to my wonderful young - often lost - students. I share with you the sadness that these generations have had the tradition so poorly rendered, but that is another memo. I wish to reflect with you about your critique of a remark made by our Governor Cuomo (I'm an immigrant Irish New Yorker). Rather than critique one unskillful remark that he made during the press conference you reference, I so wish you had reflected back to our brother and your listeners the light that has been coming through him "for the life of the world." Each day, listening to his reports, I have heard the Gospel being preached- and practiced. I have marveled that I have heard the acclamation "THANK GOD" spoken so often, so sincerely and transparently by him, that he speaks of prayer, that he speaks of love. During these months of sequestration since Ash Wednesday, I have been straining to hear a shepherd's voice in this pandemic and I have heard it daily in Governor Andrew's words and deeds of clarity and comfort, in his wise counsel. He has the vision of our faith living in him at least around this crisis - it has come forth brilliantly. Each day I have thrilled to hear him offer through the vigorous dispensation of his leadership the passion and compassion of our social justice tradition. Our brother Andrew is not an academic theologian as you and I are; he has no PhD in sacred theology. Yet as one who gratefully and humbly holds a mandatum to present our teaching in its integrity and beauty, I salute him for the way he is acknowledging the presence of the Living God with us in this pandemic, how he invokes the Mystery being manifest in the great sacrifice of the healers and the great suffering of the afflicted. If I may say to you, my Brother Robert, as a sister in the faith, your word of fire concerning the Governor felt searing; it felt as if you were calling him out for an unskillful remark made in the moment that meant not to side-line the Living One, but rather to salute the incarnate power and energy of Love pouring itself out in service and sacrifice by the first-liners and all the people so essential to our wellbeing (and so side-lined). That, to my hearing, was all he meant to say. I would be so happy to hear you extol him for the gospel he IS proclaiming, for the doxologies he IS ever intoning, the grace he IS ever invoking for all of us. . Thank you for receiving this word with the affection with which I offer it. I know you love a good argument and so do I, and this seemed a worthy engagement to support a brother who is pouring himself out to save millions. Where would we be without the intelligence and consistency of Cuomo in this unimaginable moment? All that being said, know that I have admired and followed your ministry since I and my Merton colleagues invited you to be our keynote speaker at the International Thomas Merton Society Meeting years ago. When I heard you speak of Thomas M and Thomas A as the great teachers of your life I was hearing my own mind speaking with. your voice. I think Cuomo might accept the sustaining being of God as a general truth. Of course God seems to sustain being in relation to tragedy. Including the scenarios with innocent children we all struggle with. Do we necessarily address that scenario via intervention language? I am not sure that is fair. God sustained being there and one should not imply an intention to effectuate tragedy as an end in and of itself. With apparent meaningless terrible tragedy we struggle with," why didn't God intervene or how did he let this happen?" Some describe reality as cruciform. Our Catholic paradox is die to live. The mustard seed. God so loved the world that he participated in that reality very much in solidarity with our existence within that reality. I think Cuomo's comments may have addressed the ingredient idea

Now it is neither my mind, nor your mind, nor any of our minds collectively as the Universe is too massive for us to be able to contain and comprehend and more importantly we as a species are learning about it thus we can not be the source of it or we would inheritly understand it as well as a programmer understands code he has written or an author his story. Thus it must be another mind that originates both the physical world and the immaterial logic that governs it and that is God. God bless you.

@jerryw66. I like your chain of thought. That's a real miracle right there, from dust to a engineered bulldozer.

All churches are in decline. What could reverse the hemorrhaging of the faithful? The church needs a renewed sense of hospitality, more openness to the sharing of divergent ideas, true and elevated humility and a focus on God’s providence in the modern-era. What are your thoughts?

Chris Lavalley , every time the Church tried to conform with the world, it failed miserably, what sustains the Church dor over 2,000 years is a Truth called Jesus, I dare to say the Church should go back to pre Vatican II, cause many people misunderstood, on purpose or not, its objectives and in lots of places, people lost their faith completely.

He made several statements about this, even in one of his latest homily. Something like That the truth of Jesus should not change for the world, rather we are invited to change for Jesus. (Forgive me if I got it wrong).
