@Ulrich Zwingli Well, this virtue thing could be debated (Hilter had by far more supporters among Protestants than among Catholics). And the Church cannot excommunicate the dead by the way, just as she cannot unexcommunicate them either. Latin is not a cult, it's a language the heritage of the Western World of Thought. The West 's foundation are Golgatha (Religion), Athens (Philosophy) and Rome (Law). You do not need Latin to be a virtous person, but it helps to understand the roots you live on.

I was an atheist for 20 years. I would say JP started me on the path to reconsider Christianity. I called a Catholic Church near me and said I wanted convert but didn’t know if I could believe. I was directed to Bishop Barron. The rest is history! @StrategicWealthLLC

I am not Catholic, but I do believe that Catholicism does the best job of discussing the more subtle issues. However, the above sentence should not be interpreted too positively. What I admire so much about Bishop Barron is his public expression of not understanding everything. While the following comment is one of ignorance as a non-Catholic, the Catholic Church strikes me as presenting itself as having an accurate understanding of God (irrespective of Bible versus saying that no one does). Now, I can steel man that stance by saying that maybe people at one time wanted to have an “authority” (argument from authority) to go to... and the Catholic Church feels bound to present itself in that manner. Yet, I believe today’s US individual would much prefer the deeper Jordan Peterson discussion. At the core, I have always thought that the place to start is with the universe’s existence, not with the Bible. By addressing the issue that one must have faith to believe that (1) a creator that exists outside of time and space and it was that creator that made the universe, evolution, etc, (2) the universe has always existed without reason, or (3) something in the natural world can come from nothing. Any choice one makes, the choice is one of faith, not science. Member’s of the church have chosen to believe that a creator is the best option of those choices. Then a church could go to the Bible and explain it as humanity’s attempt to grapple with the deep questions that Barron and Peterson discuss so well. I believe that Jesus Christ existed, but I don’t believe he was God... except in the metaphorical sense that we are all part of the creator. My view obviously challenges current Christianity, but I honestly don’t think Jesus dying on the cross and rising from the dead is important. The issue is that a creator made the system that made us. That is something we should respect. Out of that respect, we should seek to behave in a way that honors that creation... which means to love one another. Jordan’s interpretation of the Biblical stories does that in a the way that is beautiful.

@@Lerian_V - I don’t believe I said anything that straw mans Catholicism. If I erred, my apologies. I was introduced to Barron by Dave Rubin’s show. I sincerely admire the man. I believe he is dead on regarding his philosophy... and it is only my understanding of his theology with which I struggle. Whatever the creator is, well, the creator is powerful in ways I can’t even begin to cover. Raise the dead, heal the sick, make the blind see? Big deal... relative to the tiny part of the night sky we can see. Because of that, I understand not being able to understand what people call God. What I cannot accept is a belief that God would be the God of a particular people of this tiny planet and its religion. I cannot accept that the religious prophecies of that particular group of people would be reinterpreted by a new religious sect to explain Jesus as God... in a way the old sect would and did disagree. That is particularly true given that 3 of the 4 gospels don’t have Jesus clearly proclaiming himself as God. Even with my misunderstands of specific texts in English vs Greek, those are core things that speak to a much smaller creator than anything I envision. There is no explanation for the above that doesn’t require - in my view - unjustified faith in the theology. But having justified faith in a creator is easy.

Faith is - as indicated in this interview as well - trust in a person, who is Christ, who is God. It is not irrational, and is an aid to reason, and complementary to it. But faith - just like trust in a person - is not a calculated, always measuring, always ready to withdraw thing. Just like love - which surpasses understanding, and drives and gives meaning to existence. But if God is love, our response of love and faith is just an answer to already being loved. Faith is the act that helps us do that movement of response, and love back. But sometimes it is not easy, and it necessitates grace.

Dr. Peterson, Fr. Chad Ripperger is also a psychologist and a very holy priest. Speak to genuine traditional Catholics. I believe you may have had a role in my return to Catholicism after an absence of 48 years. If I relied on modernist bishops I would never have returned. This was, by far, my FAVORITE conversation/interview Jordan. My twin sister and I are 49 years old and the youngest of eleven children. My siblings and I were raised and educated in a devoutly Catholic family however, I abandoned the organized church years ago for a plethora of reasons, many of which you and Bishop Barron touched upon here. I struggled for years to find and carve out my own, personal, meaningful path back to the church for a very long time to no avail. After I listened to your conversation here, with Bishop Barron something in my perspective and in my past understanding shifted. I am excited to see if this fresh perspective may lead me to a door I've been looking for, for a very long time. Thank you.

As an agnostic (note to atheists: yes, I am using the term advisedly), it's amazing that I find infinitely more meaning and Truth in this conversation than in anything ever uttered or written by the likes of Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins, or Christopher Hitchens (I give a little bit more credit to Daniel Dennett, but only a little). Their shallowness, and failure to grasp fundamental aspects of the Order of the World is fully exposed. Thankfully it appears as though more and more people, especially from younger generations, are seeing this as well. There is hope...
@KRGruner

@@stonwall9065 Yes, I get that. I personally never saw him as all that wise. I am on board with his call for naturalistic explanations to the maximum extent that we can provide them, but it is precisely in that department that he falls way short. For example, his take on Free Will is pure nonsense (and yes, I know he is not the only one), even from a naturalistic/rational point of view. But he seems unable to see that, even though he acts day-to-day in a manner that contradicts his stated position (just as he fails to see the Judeo-Christian assumptions he makes all the time). And then again, his irrational side came completely out in the open with his views on Trump during the last presidential election. I mean, I get not wanting to vote for Trump, but Harris' rabid, irrational reasons and his support for Hillary Clinton (albeit not all that enthusiastic) outed him as being at least as prone as anyone else to really deep biases that he is unable to overcome not matter what the evidence actually is.

@@stonwall9065 Yea, he is not an idiot, but he still is ignorant about several concepts in Christianity I've learned about before I was 10 years old. Which makes the discussions he participates in similar to the ones I had in my teens. Same for Richard Dawkins, though at least I have learned a few things about biology from Richard and seen some interesting, decent if not good, interviews by Richard with religious people. I wish he had stuck to these interviews and making biological documentaries instead.

@KRGruner
@KRGruner 3 года назад
@@veganworldorder9394 Dawkins is great as a popularizer (and to some extent as a scholar) of evolutionary theory. However, he is total failure as a philosopher. His take on religion is ludicrous (and mind you, as pointed out, I am an agnostic) and shows a total lack of understanding of how the world works, in particular of the Natural Law and the necessity for a normative branch thereof. For example, he (and Harris, etc...) think that something is "moral" if humans have evolved a capacity to feel it as "moral," when in fact the exact opposite is true: humans evolve moral intuitions because there is an objective, reality-driven Natural Law (natural order, same thing) against which those intuitions were selected by natural evolution. In addition, these objective moral criteria CANNOT be based on or comprehended solely on the basis of the physical sciences. It MUST take into consideration the emerging (from complexity) order of INTENTIONS, GOALS, TELOS, and FREE WILL which have no place under strict materialism/physicalism. Dawkins and Harris are complete failures in that respect. They refuse to go beyond the strictly material/physical and therefore MUST end up in the grips of immorality, or at the very least amorality. The fact that they pretend to be more moral than others because they reject religion and rely on "reason" is indicative of their profound ignorance. And if judged by how they act (versus what they say to appear cool), they don't believe any of their own pronouncements. In the end, I have to agree with Nassim Taleb who calls these guys and their ilk "entertainers." That's pretty much it.

(unsuccesfully) then peterson showed up and started talking about religion in a way i had never heard. talking more about the values, and the meaning behind the stories. with the way he talked about god it felt wrong to make fun of christianity and the impact and meaning it had for the Western World. i was still atheist but became friendlier and less hostile towards religion. then finally i decided to convert back. i recently started going to church. mind you i'm not the same christian i was at the beginning. god has a different meaning to me. he's no longer real to me like he was back then. but i do try to act like he is. to put it comically: i'm pretending. and i do feel that life has more meaning now then it had when i was still a full on atheist. church is also good for me. i go outside more. and think more about my morals and actions. it wasn't just peterson though. these videos helped to convince me too. even my friend who is still a die hard atheist needed a moment after these. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-u0cKuFfYnVw.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tk62CtH6-mg.html

I hope you make it all the way back to faith and hope you do have a profound experience w/ the living God again. Nothing wrong w/ taking a rational approach to questioning your faith though, and the God does encourage this in the bible (unlike w/ islam and others). "Come let us reason together, says the Lord; though your sins be as scarlet they shall be white as snow", OR, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge". Great talk, I love listening to JBP - But I wish I could listen more to Bishon Barron speak on this one rather than Dr Peterson... although I did like his new take on Nietzsche - God isn't dead - he has been dismembered... and things that have been dismembered can be remembered back again

I felt JP didnt let the Bishop elaborate enough, which he was eagerly wanting to do, but JP would cut him off and hog the conversation. I enjoyed tremendously though.

I’m in high school and a lot of the Catholics including myself see the fault in the only mercy approach of the church. It seems that the next generation of Catholics are leaning towards the side of justice and accountability. Excellent talk.

That great to hear from someone so young, brother. I was in your exact frame of thinking when I came to faith in high school as well. Follow that thread!

On June 10, 2018 in Charlotte, NC, I had the opportunity to briefly speak with Jordan Peterson. I asked him when he was going to have a chat with Bishop Barron. His response was, "It's on my to do list.". It's finally happened!! Hopefully this will be the first of many!

I'm a Christian and I've watched some of your Genesis series. Excellent! People love listening to it because you went to the Bible with a honest teachable heart, curious, without pressuptions wanting to learn and it's rare. Dr. Peterson don't worry about living the Christian life get saved First and God will do His work through you by His grace for His glory. Love you, 🙏 JP

"If you continue in my word, you shall be my disciples indeed, And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." (Jn 8:31-32) Easy to overlook that statement. Blessed Fulton Sheen (soon to be beatified!) always emphasized this: If you live His doctrine, then you will understand it. "Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God."

Yes, like waiting for a favourite artist's record to drop, I was so glad to see this talk is finally here. Jordan really presents as a "man of sorrows and acquainted with grief" at many points in the conversation. This only adds to the cred of what he passionately expresses. Will definitely watch at least twice!
