One thing that Jordan does in interview is brilliant. When he is about to make an extended point, he will say something like "..and you can tell me what you make of this..." That makes the other person sit back and listen harder, and tend to not interrupt because they want to look insightul in their reply. I need to do that more.

Look up different charm and charisma techniques if you like that sort of thing. Jordan's basically framing it as a question not a statement, making the conversation about what Bill thinks not what Jordan thinks. Keeps the person far more involved and comfortable.

It’s actually a REALLY bad habit Dr Peterson has. When he says “and you can tell what you think of this” it’s him showing self consciousness about the fact that he knows he should ask a question or stop talking. He’s self aware enough to know he’s being a bad conversationist, but he doesn’t have the humility self control to actually stop. He does the exact same thing as a host, and there are entire episodes where he just steamrolls kind, interesting, guests who his audience, like myself, would love to hear!

Jordan with Haight or Weinstein or Murray is always great. But Jordan with someone like Maher is incredible because we get to see him so very subtly try to meet the need Maher has. Jordan's ever so gently providing therapeutic insight. You can even hear it in his voice when Jordan says, 'Well, Bill, you know this,' making it easier for Maher to accept something he doesn't want to accept. Jordan is so many things, but at his very core I think he's just a loving man who is compelled to help as many people as humanly possible.

As someone who had a son when I was 19, I was extremely underprepared to raise my son in regards to dealing with his childhood experiences. The discussion here about raising children, as well as Dr. Peterson's chapter 'Rule 5: Do Not Let Your Children Do Anything That Makes You Dislike Them' have really helped open my eyes on what I may have done sub-optimally in raising him. I would love for Dr. Peterson to put out a book on raising children, highlighting key stages of development and how best to curb behaviors before they spiral into something much worse at a later age.

If I may give a suggestion: Healing your Emotional Self - A Powerful Program to Help you Raise your Self-Esteem, Quiet your Inner by Beverly Engel is a very good book. Bill is very right here on how it is better for some peple to be single. Most individuals can not be happy alone, but that does not apply for everyone and this fact should be acknowledged by more instead of blindly preaching about the importance of living in a relationship as if though it was the ultimate key factor for one's happiness. Better to be happy alone than struggling in a relationship.

One of my favorite parts was at 1:30:25 when Bill talks about the horrible dread of being sick of looking at a hypothetical wife everyday, and how “everyone” looses passion for their wife eventually. Then Jordan says he’s never lost passion for his wife, and he embraces her in total love all of the time… then there’s an awkward pause… I think that’s one of the most wholesome conversations I’ve ever seen between a contrast of people. Notice how Jordan is vibrant, optimistic, and energetic, and Bill is shriveled and negative. That speaks volume.

Well for once he wasnt constantly being under attack so it's always more pleasant to discuss with someone that doesnt want to rip your neck off just for their divergent opinions. I don't really like Maher personaly, for many reasons, but you can see that his age allows him to be more relax and chill toward decent human conversations, compared to all these hag Peterson had to face off in interviews that were already wired to undermine his person and expertise. I'm clearly not a 100% behind Peterson's views, some things regarding him doesn't fit my personal moral compass, but at least he speaks common sense most of the time.

I agree. I find that JP looks at Bible stories for the meaning behind the myth and symbology. Sort of like how Joseph Campbell did in his Power of Myth series. So he doesn't come across as an imposing worshipper.

@mlineberry25 9 месяцев назад
@TheGreekPoet Agreed. As someone who grew up in and struggled with fundamentalist Christianity, myself, Peterson's approach to studying the Biblical narratives are inviting and thought-provoking. I've enjoyed his Biblical series quite a bit. Granted, he catches criticism from both the fundamentalist and the secularists, but I think there's inherent value in what he's trying to do. I've certainly benefited from it.
@Sanosukeafo
@Sanosukeafo 9 месяцев назад
@mlineberry25 The main issue with the Bible is that it's false and most of the meaning behind the stories are bad, lazy or uninteresting from a philospohical standpoint. Joseph Campbell's work on the monomyth is interesting because it shows how humans are primed biologically to be attracted to very similar story structures that transcends culture and geography. Which is the opposite of what Peterson does by jacking off the Bible for his right wing grift and pretending like the bronze age fairy tales of the Bible are uniquely important or philosophically interesting. Philospohical thinking has comes so much more advanced and interesting than the crap in the bible. Aside from the texts historical significance in history, it is largely pretty boring, 1 dimensional and wildly out dated by modern study.
@joeday4293
@joeday4293 9 месяцев назад
@@TheGreekPoet "Believe this or burn in hell" is a very, very different pitch than "Hey, man, you may not realize it, but there's actually some really, really deep commentary on the human condition hidden in those stories that look so dumb to you from the surface, and that's why people still continue to return to them after thousands of years." That's an entirely different conversation, and it's the way that conversation should always go. And I say that as a Christian.
@KevinGeneFeldman
@KevinGeneFeldman 9 месяцев назад
@@joeday4293 That isn't what the Bible says. It is not "believe" anything or burn in hell, its accept an offer or be forever unmade. Even some who believe in God will not accept him, Gods only after those who will, those who won't are unmade. The point is to accept the gift of the one who took punishment in your place, that you don't deserve and cant earn, or you will simply not exist anymore. You aren't owed a life you were given, you are offered an eternal life that you don't deserve.
