The truth is that, in modern times, moral and ethical progress is done despite biblical writings, not because of it. To intellectually transform the biblical war god from cruel, fickle and jealous to a "god of love" is strangely both sad and wonderful. We are weird animals indeed.
I thought God said "I am the Great I Am". (We all are who we are, aren't we?). When the man asked about the LINE between God and hell, I was waiting to hear about GETTING and STAYING in a State of Grace. The young man keeps asking him, and he does a good job asking and trying to pinpoint... but I'm NOT hearing what needs to be said. Lots of fuzzy talk here, unclear and avoiding the point. Not just di we will the good of the other? Yes Jesus said he will account for every farthing, that means the other person AND Obeying God. He seems to be poo posing the need to get in the state of grace.

In every professional role, one has their target specialties and relative strengths. That said, I MUST emphasize very clearly - CLARITY is what is lacking from Bishop Barron when it comes to highly relevant Church teaching. A lack of clarity is deceptive. As a baseline, EVERY clergy member, from priest on up to pope, MUST be clear about basic Church teaching. He is a very intelligent man and can figure out how to convey the needed messages with love, in the day and age. Especially in light of the German bishops just declaring homosexual acts are not sinful. . Certainly the Vatican must have known about this and approved, unofficially at this time, and I'm expecting it to be approved in 2023. Certainly in light of all the other heresies we are hearing about recently, having to do with the validation of all religions, because "God wills it". You can make any excuses you want, but the bottomline is that the True Church is separating from the Ape of the Church. Lex seemed genuinely engaged with this conversation. I enjoyed the podcast quite a lot, as I was baptized last week and accepted Jesus' truth. I had spent years of my adolescence and my young adult life learning and searching for God, looking at many major religions but I always found that the bible spoke almost directly to me. The more I learned the true definitions of terms the more and more it made sense. I suggest anyone who is interested in the bible further listen to the Jordan Peterson interview of Bishop Barron.
William Lane Craig would have provided a conversation that feels less preachy in my opinion. This almost sounded to me like a 2 hour sermon. Hope he can get Bill on in the future - I think it would be electric.

As one person or one group of people you cannot accomplish the work of Christ’s Church, which is really to save souls, it takes faithful people and the Holy Spirit to do the work of God. Fundementalist protestants have more/less castrated themselves from their own historical foundations. So much so that they haven't the slightest clue about how much the evolution and growth of their own religion has its roots in Greco-Roman philosophy. I'm atheist as well, having deconverted from a fundamentalist sect, and it wasn't until I started my own amateur research into philosophy chronologically that I came upon this realization. I still have a serious stance in opposition to many of the Christian beliefs and much of what Baron has said, but communicators like Baron and Jonathan Pageau and even Jordan Peterson (although I'd argue that he's really gone off the deep end lately) have really instigated a presentation of theology that is seriously engaging for those outside of their traditions. They talked about atheists like Dawkins in the beginning and I just can't help but think about how much the dominant atheist ideology is influenced by the fundementalism that has become dominant in western Christianity. The idea of a sky daddy limits the atheists just as much as it does the theists.
On the horizon of the dawn of reason is Faith, it is the luminosity that arises from the darkest to give us hope that there is a tomorrow .. @@bethq1703 True that! Sigh. Humans will be humans. When I first moved to Italy, I formed an Improvisational Theater Group. The only stage available to us was at a Catholic Church. They accepted us and I got to know the priest, who was a pretty good one. We had lots of conversations about the spirit of the Church versus the historical and political organization of it. This was so good. From someone who grew up Christian until my 30's, then amid a deep 3 yr long depression one day I snapped and lost my faith. At that point I considered myself agnostic (NOT atheist) for almost 2 decades. Now, I am happy to say that I have recently found my way back to Faith but struggling with many topics. Joe P, for me "insightful" as to why Barron does not mention consecrated celibacy or consecrated male female marriage on the clerical sexual abuse issue. Barron makes no use of Pope Francis' statements and actions on marriage that de facto have changed the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church to include 'qualitatively equal" with "inseparable" for "union and procreation in marriage.
May I also suggest Jonathan Pageau and Jordan Peterson? They have amazing insight into Christianity from a symbolic and psychological perspective, respectively. They and Bishop Baron are who led me back to God when no one else could. For the first time I am starting to see the immense complexity and truth in the Bible.

@@torsteinnordstrand170 My trust in the claim that God is a God of love comes from Jesus - love one another as I have loved you, he said, and proceeded to demonstrate what love actually looks like in action. Christianity really is all about Jesus. It took me a long time to realise that. Come to me all you who are weary, he says, and I will give you rest. That rest only needs to be experienced once to know beyond doubt that the words spoken by Jesus are unlike the words spoken by any other man. In the end it's a choice - if Jesus is who he says he is, do you want to know? If you don't then you are still free to move on and live a good life as you see fit for God sends rain on the righteous and unrighteous alike. Out of love he calls each person forward without coercion or manipulation, to come closer to him, but it would not be love if the other was not free to choose...
I replay this conversation several times a week and finally stopped myself today to ask why. I’ve determined that I connect to how it relates to the inner dialogue between myself concerning God. Although I believe, I often doubt, and hearing Bishop Barton’s articulate responses puts me at ease. Thank you for interviewing Bishop Barron. I’ve been following his word on fire content since before he as a bishop. He brought me out of the wilderness and back home to the faith. He showed me that faith and reason are not opposed.

Let's just say that it is 100 percent accurate whereas worldliness has infiltrated and skewed training or thinking of some hierarchy and clergy. Except that Barron doesn't have positions. He rambles incoherently. Did you listen to his explanation of the trinity (total nonsense), or god isn't an entity, then describes an entity doing things, god isnt an entity but has an image of himself, etc. The church is an organism but not an organization. I've watched a lot of Lex Fridman and this has been my favourite conversation yet. First he has on one of my favorite economists (Steve Keen) and then he has on one of my favorite communicators (Bishop Barron). I’m not Roman Catholic, but i am exploring Eastern Orthodoxy at the moment, and Barron has helped immensely. Just a fantastic teacher of philosophy and theology. Lex is a man of taste. I really like the Bishop’s thoughts on love. The times in my life where I truly knew that I loved somebody, I was willing to do anything for them if it was for their good. I was willing to give up my dog, who I would’ve maybe died trying to protect, because I knew that I could no longer give him the best life. That ripped my heart out, but I know he has a better life now. The same with a relationship. I was on a downward spiral and knew that my girlfriend deserved better and that I was dragging her down with me. The only thing more horrible than the thought of losing her was knowing that I was hurting her and limiting her life. I begged her to leave even though she didn’t want to. And that is the most painful thing you can do, voluntarily give up something that you love more than anything else. But if it’s for their own good, then if you really love them you will take on any amount of pain to see them do better and be happy

BTW schizophrenics never seek help, Catholic or atheist. People in the grip of auditory hallucinations get treatment when they get committed.

@@philosphorus hey, it’s his biggest weakness. Where his arguments make the least sense, where the shackles of orthodoxy are most obvious. On other points it’s obvious he found Christianity and Catholicism because they confirmed with him, with what he found true. Less obviously here. One way to tell is that for a smart guy, his arguments just have no force in this area. But we’re all imperfect. And for an imperfect being, he’s quite the admirable man.

This was unexpected but welcome. If Lex wants to continue with this road, he should consider inviting Jonathan Pageau on for the perspective of Eastern Christianity. Bishop Barron is a great Thomist, but there is a whole other world to Christ’s church, its other “lung” in the East and Pageau is an excellent communicator of it.

Same here. When I was young family mealtimes around the table would sometimes included such good conversations. These days blue screens are everywhere and we are being mentally spammed and programs are dumbed down. Family conversations can become heated and hostile. Time is 'too short'. We are being polarised by those with vested interests, through oversimplifications and soundbytes. People seem to be forgetting how to talk with each other. As an atheist(raised chatolic) i'm really excited to listen to this conversation. Christianity, the stories, the mythos never really appealed to me as a kid even though i was raised to be a chatolic. For whatever reason I never cared too much about it, I don't ever recall myself ever praying. Nothing about it felt special or important to me. I'm not interested in becoming a christian, but in understanding more the mind and reasons why someone becomes one. I understand now what i didn't understand when i was a teen, that the structure, dogmatic nature, and sense of community within religions can be extremely beneficial for a subset of people who really identify themselves with it. Nothing in this world will work for everyone, but I'm very interested in hearing why it works for him/you. What god means to you, the idea of it and your faith in it. All these things are very interesting to me, not because i believe in them but because i believe that in understanding those perspectives i can know more about myself and the world around me.

Thank you Lex for a awesome interview with Bishop Robert Barron. Both my parents are from Poland and immigrated to Canada after the war where they met and married. They later immigrated to California where i was born and grew up in the 60's and 70's. We were raised Russian Orthodox on Saterday's and Catholic on Sundays, my father sent my brother and sisters to learn the russian language on Saterdays during my youth. We spoke Polish in our home, my first launguage. In my humble opinion, Bishop Barron does an excellent job in sharing his love for Jesus with others, i currently go to a non-denominational church whose mantra is Love God and Love others, As Christians we need to focus on the teachings of Jesus and not lace your own theological speculation into the Gospels, resulting in divisive rhetoric that drifts into politics. Lex you have a wonderful gift and thank you for sharing and trying to bring education and love into the conversation.
