It's not easy to get to, and you risk getting stranded by the tide, but this small beach on the Isle of Mull is well worth the effort. Because here you'll find one of Scotland's true geological wonders.....MacCulloch's fossil tree!
But impressive as the tree itself undoubtedly is, it is matched and perhaps surpassed by the stupendous 'Lost World' scenery of the Ardmeanach Peninsula.

Actually that whole giant wall behind you is the cross section of of giant fallen (or cut) now petrified tree... believe it or not. You can see the giant ring with the bark around the edges pieces strone about all over the beach too. They only tell you a bit of truth. That is absolutely magnificent!!!

Just yesterday I bought a tree-limb cast (petrified wood).My sample, with petrified growth rings, formed when hot volcanic ash encased the wood limb and the heat burned the wood to charcoal. Over millions of years, minerals replaced the charcoal turning it to stone. The limb is surrounded by solid volcanic ash. This wood- limb cast is from Oklahoma in the United States.

Been there twice but found what I thought was fossil tree before the waterfalls. Down the ladder, along a grassy bit then on the shore. Path is closed by landslide.

They say you can find gold at the bottom of every waterfall. A true treasure. What are those fossils in the rocks at your feet. Yes the basalt columns are interesting.

Dammit, I didn't know that, I'll need to rush back before someone else finds it ;-)

It's a SSSI so will have been widely studied. Just have a rummage online and I'm sure you'll find some academic papers :)

Check out the websites on the giant fossilized cedar trees as well as ancient mud fossils. There was one giant imprint of a cedar leaf spanning hundreds of feet across and could only be detected by satellite photos. The flat top canyon mountains are remnants of chopped cedar trees. A botanist can easily recognize the formation. Hey and there looks to be like a mud fossil of a fish head to the right side.

Probably not from a lava flow, but from an electrical discharge event when most mountains were formed during the cataclysmic days when Venus and Mars roamed the solar system and created massive electrical events onto the Earth. www.eu-geology.com/?page_id=266

Hmm. We are positive that it is a tree and not coincidence? Seems very conveniently placed.

The trunk seems level with the ground which surely should have eroded after such time. Someone should dig it up and see if there are any intact roots. The valuable things that could be learned from proper analysis.

the part u think is the "tree" is a small branch of a massive tree the whole thing is a tree from preflood world when things where much much larger

This is indeed the fossilised stem of the tree. The tree has been identified as a species of Cupressinoxylon, through remains of the wood structure; a relative of the modern day members of the Cupressaceae family that actually haven't differed in size much since the Palaeogene and earlier.

Can you gimme an example of lava NOT turning trees (wood) into charcoal.....here in reality ? Or better yet, can you gimme a documented example in nature...of lava encasing a tree.... without turning it to charcoal AND cooling and hardening in about 5 minutes flat ? Where can I observed this sorcery ? I can see plenty of videos of trees perishing to lava flows..

Hiya - I'm happy to answer but would you mind clarifying your question first? What's the process or action that you're taking issue with, specifically, in relation to MacCulloch's fossil tree? Cheers :)

Benvironment What OBSERVATION in nature.....lead you to believe that lava can encase a tree....AND cool and harden so quick the tree doesn't turn to charcoal ? Where can I observe that sorcery ? Also, what evidence suggests it is millions of yrs old ?
@BenvironmentBlog
@BenvironmentBlog 6 лет назад
None....which is why I say in the video that the tree would have been instantly carbonised and turned to charcoal.
