In today's exploratory video, we look at using the Note Grid and retriggered, blended and pitched quantized LFOs to generate melodic MIDI that can be sent to any instrument of your choosing. Being able to so easily create these delicious modular moods is the number one reason I love Bitwig. I hope you enjoy playing around with this idea :)

I would use bitwig but dispite all if it’s features it doesn’t have Highlight scale mode, Wtf U guys got new automation tools, and can design ur synths from scratch. But can’t highlight scale…

Tip: If the Wavetable LFO isn't passively generating a signal, you need to set the Note Grid's "Voices" to "Mono" from the Inspector Panel

Thanks, that was painful. Plus, set triggers "mute when stopped".

@@citadelo5ricks I think you mean uncheck "Free-run when stopped" ? Anyway that worked for me.

Yes, when you are coming from hardware modular synthesis (where it is expected that oscillators and LFOs are ALWAYS running), the number one important thing to know about The Grid is to set Voices to 1.

Really appreciate your presence. Always a refreshing take on things and a relaxed teaching style. Huge thanks, I know it's harder work than you make it seem to put out vids like this

I'm so glad you dig the videos - it is my pleasure to share my love for Bitwig with the wide world! It's definitely a bit of effort creating these videos but I''m trying to develop less of a perfectionist attitude towards so as to keep it up for longer ♥

OMG you helped me so much! I was being ridiculous and for the life of me I could not figure out how to record my generative patch from the poly grid into the arranger. I was trying to record via midi track but I see you used the Audio Track!!! Thank you so much!!!

You made a ‘think’ with your space bar in the first minute or so that deserves to be sampled as a kick. Love this and love that you’re giving lessons. Thank you!

Dude, the way you think on how to make music is so untraditional, and I love that. Your approach is amazing! Thank you so much!

Great stuff, I thought you were losing your marbles between 30:00 and 35:00 but then the Pitch Quantizer and slowing the whole thing down turned mush into magic

5:40 - I believe this is called Hocketing or at least a form of it. Such a fun thing to do! I always get my pitch scaler and pitch quantizer in the wrong order and it never works right! Quantizer then scaler doesn't work. Never thought about using the post fx for note scale, that's such a good idea!

This is a melody generator of sorts, not hocket, but it could be made into that by distributing the notes over various instruments, in sequence. "In music, hocket is the rhythmic linear technique using the alternation of notes, pitches, or chords. In medieval practice of hocket, a single melody is shared between two voices such that alternately one voice sounds while the other rests"

I love the note grid, but I still don't know how I can get a modulation source out and pass it to another device or instrument. Is there a trick?
11 месяцев назад
You have to make it mono 🥰

Wonderful stuff. Gonna try this later. Can I suggest a follow up? How to generate a random 'top line' melody, with random trigger, different gate lengths and rests?

hi, thanks for the content. Very informative and following through. One question, in the early part of the content, when i click stop to stop the transport, if the counter happens to be zero, i get a continous note even after stopping. Why is that and how to prevent? I am using 5.04. Thanks

Bitwig 5's browser is so slow, you are not alone. Kind of annoying this went out of beta with it. Anyway, thanks for sharing!

I’m having a weird issue where the note going through note grid into polymer juste triggers a short note and then disengages entirely.. What am i doing wrong?
@boryskuczkowski
@boryskuczkowski Год назад
Counter module, I think it starts at 0 so for 4 outputs you need to set a counter to 3?
@Xstatic1975

As soon as I delete the 'Note In' in note grid my lfo's do nothing just flatline in the oscilloscope and no more midi out to polymer. Don't know what the hell is going on
@TheQxY

You have to set the poly grid to Monophonic. Otherwise it enables note lifetime management, which means notes are only created if they go through a finite envelope. If they didn't do this you could easily create a million voices without realizing it and kill your CPU.

In Note Grid settings set voices to Mono (True) and check Control and Audio Thru in Routing.
