Today we've got a question from Joe who is wondering what BJJ Black Belts/Jiu-Jitsu Instructors watch for when looking at students rolling.
He says that his gym is like most where they do a basic warm-up, drill techniques, then do live rounds.
He says that there are so many times that he wants to work on something new, but he's scared that this might make him look bad Infront of his coach: because with most new techniques you try, you suck at them initially.
He doesn't want his coach to think "Damn, he's not improving and he's not ready for advancement"
Joe, it would be helpful if you talked to your coach for clarification, but here's how I view my students' rolls...
Hopefully, you found this video helpful.
Thanks for watching!

Will also add- your coach knows when you're doing something they've never seen you do before. They know when you're trying something new and branching out. To Chewie's point- it's really unlikely they are mentally assigning you demerits for it.

I forgot where I heard this from but I love the saying the Jits is for people who love to suck at something. Literally being able to not be discouraged after getting smashed then going how did you do that?!? Learning along the way. People think its a mystery, but any black belt recognizes that in people and gauges from there.

That's good actually, it can be really tough. Aside from genetic gifts and youthful stuff I'd also go with, essentially, everyone in the gym was in the same place as you at one time, they sucked, sometimes they still suck...the key is getting back and asking question in order to suck less 😂

If my professor saw me "win" he'd probably wonder if the other guy just fell asleep or something.

Sometime we are not evolving even on ours strongest game. I spend most of my mat time trying trying to evolve a different aspect of the game, but I don’t change what I’m trying to develop as soon as it starts to work, I’ve found that’s really helpful that once im hitting a move to often not necessarily change what I want to develop, but actually teach others to defend it so I can still develop even more that aspect of the game

A experience for white belts w stripes is to tell them to go lose the roll a la fight club. It’s a good learning opportunity that allows you mentally to explore other parts of your game.

I had little bottom game until a few weeks ago when I learned lockdown. All of a sudden, I was hitting knee bars, calf slicers baseball chokes etc. I used to want to only play top and smash. Now I find I want to be on my back! I don't land every move, but I'm enjoying playing with all these new ideas.

For me - it's more that when I fail when I try something new/different, I immediately tell myself- I guess you can't do that- and I never want to try it again. Getting past that, is the battle.

As always, good to hear your thoughts on this Chewy. How would you tweak your answer when it comes to competition results? I might be mistaken in thinking you've covered that before but I've lost every match I've had and the thought of letting my coach & teammates down by losing affects my confidence in signing up for comps etc. thanks.

That’s a fact. It’s pretty hard to see growth from someone who always wins. Show me how you roll against a more skilled person.

Unless you’re going to put me down like a sick horse I’m never going to lose sleep over my progress. I genuinely don’t care if you decide to rank me or not. I’m mostly into Jiu Jitsu for stress relief and conditioning. I’m not in it to get a black belt or do competitions.
