In this Episode, Dr Parakala speaks about how the Rabbit-Duck Illusion is helpful for us to understand the current political scenario in India. He dwells on how for a large and significant section of the people the Hindu-Hindutva construct of Indian identity did not appear as an acceptable political project for a long time in the country's history. It was a liberal and diverse idea of India that was predominant. However, eventually with some had work, the the Hindu identity, began to appear as acceptable, and in the course of time it became a major force. It is from this Hindu identity, Parakala argues,that the BJP Government draws its power and legitimacy. And not from its performance. Any attempt to reclaim the idea of a liberal India will have to contend with the strength of Hindu-Hindutva identity narrative.

First time I listened to a person who is aware of the terms and germs of our age old social fabric and who happened to be able to articulate with a subtle language narrates what is that the educated of this country,who learned to listen to an extent to the political analysis often available on Indian TV laments as if they are carefully watching all that happening in warranted. Unfortunately it is too late for all those, soon will realize what they all thought is wrong and most interestingly,there is nothing they can do any more but to mourn as far as their understanding goes. Faith,Hope and Love long last all other fade away. Are we true to our selves to engage on anything worthy to expect or to happen

If he is bestowed with so much inborn talents and is intellectual why couldn't he foresee or understood the motives of PRP and chiranjeevi, he attributed, before he left the party! Why couldn't he understood all the reasons he cited to criticize the TDP and CBN before he took charge as advisor to the government! What made him to join the BJP! Masterpiece sir!!! Sincerely hope masses understand the underlying meaning of each word and sentence. The idea of India as enshrined in our constitution and the benefits to the social diverse fabric in context towards modernity and scientific temper has to begin in very early years of life as is done with religious rituals . This sadly is neglected from the early years and hence very scant understanding of constitutional understanding is seen in the adult electorate!! Heart felt appreciation of your diagnosis, articulation of it using history of free India, and the analogy of duck and rabbit. My take. 1. What was lurking underneath in Indian psyche was made to surface by the duo. 2. Performance of the govt against promises is irrelevant. 3. Hindutwa and pride for being a Hindu is the fuel that gives the govt it’s current strength and confidence. 4. Brilliant strategy has been put to use by the BJP - RSS combine. Hats off to them. 5. If so, even well articulated promise of performance by combined opposition will cut little ice with people - the rabbit cannot be easily obliterated, come what may. 6. For the BJP, hence, ring-fencing Hindutwa-Hindi-BJP becomes critical - winning UP at any cost tops their agenda. 7. The duck has to dive very deep and come up with alternative long-term strategy, making a few waves on the surface of the pond won’t help. 8. You have painted the situation so starkly. It is so honest and so courageous of you. The RSS volunteer's sullen compliment must send a chill down every thinking person's spine. We seem to be just a few steps from a mindless dictatorship. Those in charge of the Hindu Rashtra project are determined, efficient and ruthless. They are full of resources and have no moral qualms. Their madness has a method to it. Opposition is not only divided, but also stone-blind to the obvious. Even if it manages to displace BJP for a while, there is no guarantee that they will not disgrace themselves and hand back power to BJP on a platter the next time around. You have said all of this. But what is your solution? Are you in touch with leaders who matter?

Prakhakar Sir! I watched this piece holding my breath ! It was so deeply thought provoking.. worrying ...but what can one do ? Democracy works only where the electorate is aware of the value of their vote! Ours is a deeply illiterate, starving, uneducated, superstitious population! Their votes are on sale for a gas cylinder, toilet, rs.500 or a pint of hooch distilled in the backyard.. the well thought out votes of the educated South is easily neutralized by the reckless thought less votes of the aptly named cow belt.. one can only but despair !!

I also believe that not just the influence of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on the Senior Leaders at Independence and his choice, some would like to say preference, of Jawahar Lal Nehru, secular to the core with Scientific temper and respect for diversity, but the killing of Mahatma by a Hindu Hardcore Religious Zealot, and presence of leaders like Patel and Azad in the Govt, kept in check the forces like RSS and Jan Sangh and others of their kind. This led to our not becoming like Pakistan and the growth of the Nation with scientific temper. However, all this could only postpone the emergence of Hindutva Forces and the beginning of the 21st Century and before that lack of maturity of Junior Congress leaders, increasing weakening of Congress and its dependence on Regional Parties to form the Govt led to the creation of a conducive environment of Divisive Forces; RSS provided the footsoldiers for BJP coming to power and also form a majority Govt. Despite the incompetence, it would be difficult to unseat it!

Interesting theory. I would like to put a few points here, some of which may disagree. Firstly, the BJP won with a vote share of 38%, which is much less than half of the votes. However, due to the electoral representational system, they captured a disproportionate number of seats - nearly 60%! So, if there is an away vote shift of just 10% towards a united opposition, the BJP will be in trouble. I agree that Hindutva has captured a sizable number of people, but if the economy continues it's slide and more jobs are lost and these same Hindutva people and their children begin to get affected, things will change very fast. The people have to think about the future of their children too! On the whole a united opposition can hope for better things.
