I rarely comment on Movie Math but I wanted to give you my movie experience, Grace. When I went to the theatre everyone was quiet (when people weren’t laughing at the jokes) and respectful. No phones were out and I couldn’t hear a ring at all. The theatre was clean when my friend and I got to our seats. When Henry Cavill showed up I heard quite a few cheers and roars from the audience which was a great feeling. I enjoyed the movie and I love my movie going experience where I live. Since you give your movie going experience in New York I thought I would give mine all the way from South Bend, Indiana. Thanks for your commentary, Grace.
This was also my experience. One dude even shouted "I SEE YOU, DC. I SEE YOU!" and people all cheered and laughed with him. Super hype for the Henry Cavill reveal.
Same my movie experience was exciting. Everyone laughed and chuckled at the funny scenes, and gasped in awe at the edgy action scenes. I felt like I was watching Avengers 1 again.
Can say this... Dwayne made everyone at my town cheer in different parts of the movie but the biggest... Henry showing up with the classic suit and hair.. love it
I enjoyed Black Adam very much regardless if the story wasn't perfect. It gave me that same exciting feelings when I was reading comic books in my teens. The JSA was a big welcome addition to the big screen; especially the badass Hawkman and the majestic Dr Fate. I'm starting to have hopes again in the DCEU and looking forward to more.
My wife and I absolutely loved Black Adam , yeah it has it’s laughable moments but holy crap we were so entertained and there was way way more good action then we expected, the special effects were awesome, it felt like going to a action movie more then a comic book movie and I think that is why we enjoyed it so much.
Let's be honest, grace isn't doing a fair assessment of black adam opening, the opening is good for a unknown character like black adam, grace didn't like BA now she is downplaying the BA opening
I saw Black Adam this afternoon with my brother in South Africa. Huge reaction from the audience, everyone laughed at the jokes. Most stayed for the extra scene, which had a massive reaction with applause and cheering. It was great to be back in a movie theater after so long (Doctor Strange 2 was the last movie I saw in theaters)
In Malaysia, the audience was thoroughly entertained. Though some parts when the jokes didn't quite land for me, the audience was laughing so hard, i laughed at their laughter. All that said, everybody in the theater including myself enjoyed the movie
Let's be honest, grace isn't doing a fair assessment of black adam opening, the opening is good for a unknown character like black adam, grace didn't like BA now she is downplaying the BA opening
They need to continue!! The problem with DC and why they can’t gain any momentum is because they change plans on a whim!! Stick to the path you just introduced!!! Build momentum!!!!!!!! Stop changing course just because you don’t see MCU numbers right away
Thank you grace for pointing out Terrifier 2. It was an amazing movie. Sadistic, funny, brutal, spectacle. I loved every second. HOWEVER I had the worst movie experience I have ever witnessed. Some high schoolers got in and would walk from different rows and sit down and switch seats. Also talk and exaggerated shrieks and screams. Thankfully they got kicked out
Maybe Wb/D just picks a direction and go with it for a while. There’s been so much change, why not let DJ and team put their passion into the DCEU, they seem to be fans of the superhero genre themselves. There’s a lot of things Black Adam did on the superhero front that was really fantastic, the organic use of abilities and very satisfying battle sequences. And their VFX team, wow, best I’ve seen in quite some time.
This is the first movie they've put out since the merger and discovery had no say in the production. Please don't imply they haven't picked a direction yet
I agree this is the issue fans won't invest in a franchise with no clear direction. If the audience score is anything to go buy , this is what the audience wants. There are rumors a Black Adam sequel script is written already. If indeed it is Black Adam vs Superman They should fasttrack it and give fans what they seem to want.
Let's be honest, grace isn't doing a fair assessment of black adam opening, the opening is good for a unknown character like black adam, grace didn't like BA now she is downplaying the BA opening
70M projection. After bad RT score lowered to 60M projection. Opens at 67M opening. That means it was closer to the original projection in spite of the RT score.
The thing about Henry Cavill, prio to this he's only played Superman 3 times, each film was divisive, none had a fresh RT score, so as much as many on social media, myself included were rooting for his return, it's really not surprising the mainstream audiences still don't care about him. I don't blame that on WBD misreading the fanbase but the old regimes mishandling the character for 10 years
I don't know if it's mishandling so much as the character just isn't very compelling in live action. Superman's best story in the comics is the one where he dies, everything else is when he's a part of the Justice League. A perfect boy scout is boring to the average movie goer. You'd think they would learn that by now. No superman movie has done exceptionally well at the box office, that isn't going to change now.
@@gemelwalters2942 That's a terrible take. Did Captain America struggle for being a, "perfect boy scout?" Also Superman the movie in 1978 did extremely well at the box office.
@@gemelwalters2942 I lw agree with you. I’ve always kinda felt that way about Superman, not much that’s very interesting about an invincible man that can do anything. But I do believe they could fix it maybe throw in superboy or use a more interesting villain.
@@everburn I don't need a take. The box office speaks for itself. Also, this isn't the 70's. Floating white jesus savior isn't going to cut it. How many Batman animated movies is there every year...how many does superman have. There is a reason for that. His games are bad, his movies are average at best and so are his comics unless he's teaming up with someone to play off of. News of his involvement in Black Adam hasn't helped much at all but lets keep going. I'm sure by your rationale they'll be making billions
@@nicarmendariz9079 That's exactly why superboy worked, hell even smallville. He's a more relatable character when he is makes mistakes and stumbles like everyone else. Ppl yearning for Donner's superman are stuck in the past. Every single comic book character has changed since the 70's. Superman either needs to change or continue to fail at the box office.
It's like watching a football game with every play is a hail Mary. A few might even connect but buy the end you're like enough please a different play. 😳
That’s a good description for all of Rocks films. I honestly don’t get the die hard fan base for him. His movies are all generic, safe, and mediocre at best.
@@Davidsworldtravels I can give you the 2 main reasons why. #1 He was a very popular pro wrestler so he already has a built in fan base. #2 he is an expert at marketing himself and his movies. He knows how to play to the crowd. A mediocre/ok actor can turn into a star real quick w/ the right marketing behind them.
I was sooo waiting for this, Grace. Box Office Mojo says $67M and I considered it a win. I don’t really understand why people are disappointed..? $140M worldwide is still good money, in today’s world.
i think it mostly stems from the movie big price tag of 195 million dollars and it needed at least $500 million to break even is why most considered the opening not that stellar
@@luismedrano6680 The opening was better than expected. It is stellar. Its over 100m world wide in ONE DAY. Itl make its money back kiddo. People like you have no idea what you are saying.
I saw black Adam with my friends in a full theater in Riyadh Saudi Arabia, the people here loved it with a lot of cheers in the action moments and of course when Henry came a huge pop and cheers emerged from our theater. I loved the movie and I’m going to see it again tomorrow
Something weird I noticed was that around half of my theater (maybe 20 people) left right when the credits started (before the extra scene)! I think a lot of people just came to see “The Rock in a superhero movie” and not “the newest DCEU installment.” For context, I went late on a Saturday night to my local AMC, but not in a premium format like IMAX or Dolby. Did this happen to anyone else?
Maybe people didnt think there would be one. I know a lot of people who wouldn't sit through credits unless they knew for sure that there would be an after credit scene.
People aren't trained for DC post-credit scenes like they are for Marvel. But even Marvel movies a % of people will leave when the credits start - they don't even wait for the mid credits scene/s. Perhaps they really need to pee!
Everyone in my theater stayed cheered when the movie was done and cheered when Henry came at the end. Edit: entire theater was packed as well at a 2pm Saturday showing
Folks aren't as accustomed to credits bonus sequences and universe story linking in DCEU films. Same group of people at a Marvel film - 80% would've stayed. They've been trained to know this novelty with MCU films, and stay. Good on Marvel for really converting the masses to that awareness, anyway. A full experience from start to after final credits.
I think Black Adam will have a strong second week. Everyone I've talked to that has seen it has loved it! The strong word of mouth and strong audience scores should help it in the second week. I'm going to see it the second week and I think a part of that is because of the vast difference in critic and audience scores. I'm used to critics rating garbage movies quite highly while audiences hate it, so I'm curious what the reverse will yield.
I caved and saw Black Adam today. It was not that bad. I had super low expectations based on all the conversations and reviews, but the film was overall enjoyable. Excited for Barbarian to drop on HBOMax tomorrow!
I saw Black adam yesterday too. Honestly its way better than what reviews said. I enjoyed it more than black panther for sure. Like that movie is overrated.
A very optimistic $500m worldwide (without a confirmed release date in the 2nd largest movie market in China) would mean it still loses money given its minimum $300m TOTAL cost as it needs to gross $600m just to break-even given the 50/50 split with theatres worldwide. Not to mention that BP 2 opens in 3wks time and will snatch up so many screens.
@@kordellswoffer1520 Are you that insecure that rational box office analysis triggers you that easily?! You're aware that you or me don't personally 'win' anything from this right?!
@@AllInTheGame01 wow listen to the both of you. The same insult almost exactly at the same moment. I'm not insecure about anything, I'm simply saying your hyping up the mcu to much, I don't care what anyone wins as that wasn't the point of my comment. The mcu is garbage now and doesn't command the box office like it use to, I'm willing to bet black panther 2 won't do as well and certainly be as good as it's predecessor. Me thinking this doesn't make me insecure.
Everyone seems to be loving Black Adam. I'm curious if the reception is enough of a motivating factor for them to greenlight and move forward with more Black Adam films, or if they still plan on trimming down Warner Brothers to get it ready to sell?
For Horror fans, some big horror movies 25th 'Barbarian' comes to Hbo, 'Pearl' on Itunes, on the 28th 'Run Sweetheart Run' comes to Amazon and Neil Marshall's new one 'The Lair' comes to Vod...cant wait to get them, also yeah Cabinet of Curiosities by Del Toro on Netflix over several nights starting 25th looks great too..Happy Halloween Grace and everybody!
I’m excited to see barbarian on hbo. Me and friend tried to see it in theaters but we missed it! Saw Smile, it was pretty good! Not as jump scary as they made it seem but it was very unnerving.
I'm ngl, I'm not fan of Dwayne Johnson as an actor so I wasn't interested in watching in theaters. But I'm happy pple enjoyed it and overall successful. I don't understand why pple would consider it a flop.
I hate how the media is making it like it's our fault (the fans) for not being united. DC is giving us so many different iterations that we're bound to be divided. Give us one clear stream of DC canon stories that we can enjoy. Frankly, I am starting to feel some serious superhero fatigue, not because of the sheer amount of content being thrown at us, but by how actually mediocre it is.
I'm in San Diego, this was my first dc film I watched and I enjoy it, I want the Friday show at 2 pm, the theater was really empty, I thought more people would be there.
I think that besides amazingly awesome cg and action, what I enjoyed the most was diving in with the team. Just a brush up on who everyone was and then we got into the movie. No drawn out origin story for each character. Semi spoiler: My favorite gag was BA trying out his punch line on guys and never delivering it at the right time. I knew he would get it right in the end but I still enjoyed the process as he tried it out and then when he nailed it.
I think word of mouth will help the film, since in the Central Florida area tickets were easy to come by which is unlikely here. I imagine the hype will cause people to check it out next weekend and for Halloween weekend this could be a motivating factor as well.
It was fun. Had a good time with my buddy. Honestly, we were both flabbergasted at the then 55% RT score. The theater was responsive and laughed at the jokes. Lots of questions about having a Dr Fate movie lol.
It was structuraly a bit of a mess and critics general dont enjoy non MCU movies with constant action set pieces, they want incredible writing and in dept character development which this film was never going to have and really for the most part didnt need to have for the general audiences...i thought RT for Critics wud of been like 55 to 60 % cause i knew even before i watched the film thats the best a film like this could get..
Enjoyed the movie. 7.5/10. But I’m disappointed Dwayne convinced the WB executives to bring back a flawed version of Superman just so he can have an action filled brawl with him
WB has got to start caring about comic source material and get someone who does in front. You can’t take some creative swings, but totally changing a character that’s been proven to work is idiotic. They have to say, “this (points to graphic novel or image for popular and successful comic run) is the character and story we want in essence. You either want to make this film/play this character or you don’t and that’s okay. We’d love to see if there’s another project you’d be a better fit for, but the character and story have to come first.”
Grace - I was with you right up until you started chastising the DC audience for all the fighting. You are constantly criticizing the fans of DC for that, but you never go after the studio for causing that division in the first place. Lame.
Saw black Adam lightning. Wasn’t groundbreaking but it was a fun time. My theatre had a few other groups, which was surprising since it was the first showing on a Saturday(I always go early to avoid annoying movie goers)
That 40% is ridiculous. I enjoyed the movie. Reading audience reviews, very few that I read even mentioned Henry Cavill. Thor Love and Thunder was an embarrassing mess yet it did better on RT score. 🙄
@@ericgrande7155 Everyone has a different funny bone. I find DC movies humor more nuanced. I liked a lot of the humor in Thor, but overall I couldn't watch the movie twice even for the humor.
I just watched the movie today with my friends in Bangladesh. We enjoyed it till the post credit scene alongside the whole audience. The audience loved the film.
But grace needs to understand that all these movies weren't attacked by the critics like Black Adam. A lot of people were turned off by it initially and once the audience score was shown they went and watched it. I think this movie still has time to make money. Probably around 500M or so, not including DvD sells.
I had so much fun watching Black Adam, it was fun movie and it's been a while since I had fun with my theater experience. I have seen it twice, once alone and the other with my friends, both days the audience was laughing and everyone went nuts when Henry Cavill appeared. So I don't care about critics RT score I have learned that they are over critical of DC movies and to be honest what really matters is what the audience think. There's one thing I will highly disagree with you though, I don't think the RT audience score is rigged, I really think that even if the critics want to bring this movie down the audience enjoyed it and that's all that matters. Looking forward to the watch along of HOTD finale
I would disagree with her about dc not having enough followers they do now you add The Rock that’s a massive bump on followers especially since he has such a huge fan base overseas. This movie is going to good especially with the good reviews from the fans.
I was just thinking about movie math, I open youtube, and look at this 😍. Couldn’t end my day better, thanks for the clever and educational videos Grace!
One thing that grease forget that no one never heard of Black Adam this is the first time black Adam has made his debut too big theater. All the other references she’s making has already been established. That is something that she’s not mentioning.
I didn't LOVE the movie but I enjoyed it. The third act was obviously a big mess. What surprised me the most, though, was how much my theater loved it. Audience was big into it, cheered multiple times including in moments where even I was like "really?" (Hawkman's entrance saving the two intergang guys got a really big cheer). The post credits scene got a big reaction as well. People also laughed more than I did personally, even though I found some jokes funny. I'm a DC guy, but not a big Rock guy. But I gotta admit I found it fun, and the people around me found it REALLY fun.
I agree the final third was a bit of a mess, for me i hated the main villian but Black Adam and JSA i loved..I still overall had a lot of fun but my theatre had people cheering throughout which i imagine a lot of theatres did..
I don't have any thoughts about the shows or ratings Grace. But I want you to know that your consistent videos always Brighten up my day. Keep putting that great work 💚
Grace how do you expect the vitriol to stop when WB/DC keeps fanning the flames by not giving us a solid prime universe around the JLA? I feel like the effort to not seem like Marvel has hurt the company. The Batman and Joker may have crossover appeal, but when the hardcore fans know that its not part of a shared universe, you can't expect long term success. Either commit to a shared universe or one offs but trying to both simultaneously is proving to be lackluster at best. Give us what we want not what you think we should want.
I agree it really does feel like people are over compensating about how much they like it. The worse the critics reviews were it feels like the fans had to go extra hard in the other direction. Personal prospective I enjoy all comic movies. Didn’t care for the part of Thor love and thunder, doctor strange was just missing something. Batman was cool. Spider-Man’s new movie was surprisingly emotional. Really enjoyed it. If we’re going back a few years Aquaman was okay. The ending was amazing though. Love Man of Steel and hate Batman v Superman. Liked the justice league synder cut. I’ll probably watch Black Adam I’m just not in a rush.
I'm seeing it's real hard to get people back in the theaters since the height of the pandemic. People's habits have changed. They don't like going to the theaters as much anymore.
The phrase "by Hollywood's perspective" is a signal that we should not lend what follows any credence. Remember, this is an industry that uses every deceptive financial practice possible to cook its books to avoid paying backend points, taxes, and other financial obligations. They don't adjust for inflation when reporting "All Time" box office figures (which makes those figures useless), and they use non-sensical logic to construct box office demographic results that sacrifice mathematical validity for PR impact. It is disingenuous to support those practices while at the same time take them to task for deciding that low box office results for some movie(s) constitutes "good news at the box office". Remember, it's from their perspective after all, which Grace is trying to convince us is all that really matters. The truth is, their perspective is completely skewed towards only that which makes them look good, not what reality/logic/math actually tells us, and that's something everyone should take into account when absorbing any and all associated entertainment reporting.
As predicted, Grace is HATING on Black Adam again. That RT audience score is bugging the shit out of her. I loved it, fun movie. If this movie gets me Man of Steel 2, even better.
I'm usually brutal with you. But you're right. The DC eu is just a stinker. Edit: to add, DC fans are EXACTLY what you said. They are such a niche audience and it's hard to make a movie for such an audience.
Glad to see it’s doing well and to see the 90% audience score. Black Adam is a success. Good job, DC/WB. Glad you’re back. This is just my opinion. I liked it.
I watched it in Times Square and one more time at 34th in nyc and everyone kept cheering and clapping. They loved Black Adam in both theaters I were in and I honestly loved it. I’m going to see it again this weekend. Taking my little cousin who is excited
Jamie Lee Curtis can have a breathe of fresh air from Halloween Ends if she gets pushed for an Oscar nom for Everything Everywhere All At Once 😆 (I think is unlikely but who knows...)
I rarely go to the debut weekend now, when I used to. So I’m planning to watch in a week or two. The numbers is probably good for the Rock, but the big picture is it’s not a great opening start because it will probably drop the week after. This opening for sure won’t crack $1billion. Hopefully it can meet expectations compared to Aquaman.
Let's be honest, grace isn't doing a fair assessment of black adam opening, the opening is good for a unknown character like black adam, grace didn't like BA now she is downplaying the BA opening
Marvel is finally finding non-humanoid aliens 😂. That thing, multiple arms, looked nowhere near a man splashed with paint 😂 I wouldn't mind a Hawkman solo film, he was pretty badass in Black Adam! A HBO Max series? For the origin of the mace and the metal?
To the movies credit..it’s an obscure character in a movie that’s in a dying universe. Previous films had the advantage of working up to justice league. Even with the MCU most films have been a disappointment after endgame and trending down.
I had a Universal logo in front of my Black Adam screening in Australia, how big would their slice be for international distribution? I also watched Ticket to Paradise like a month ago😂
She wrote comic books for DC Comics. She's always openly loved DC more than Marvel. What she has reservations about, like most of the fans, is Warner's constantly changing direction with the DCEU; and ALSO the changes to source material. She expressed the same feelings towards MCU's Elsa Bloodstone in "Werewolf by Night". She wasn't completely satisfied. That's fine. Doesn't make you a hater to express disappointment or concern.
I think for a movie FILLED with obscure characters. WB should fill amazing about these results. I guarantee most didn't know about Black Adam or the JSA. I do think it was a mistake to not show the Shazam connection.
I find this hate for black adam weird. I saw it, writing was weak but the action is highly entertaining. Just let the fans enjoy it. Not every movie has to be an Oscar movie.
@@lacolem1 it’s quite unfortunate. Especially for a fanbase that rarely gets a W. when they manage to get 1 good thing. Critics and pundit are always so quick to take it away. Why? This is why DC fans get really aggressive. Press obviously gaslights them. And the irrational ones respond.
Hi again Grace Don't you feel that the Critic score is as much prone to manipulation for political reason as much as you claim audience scores are for DC superhero film? Please reflect on whether you prefer Marvel Phase 4 to Black Adam and whether your opinion is potentially biased too? Respectfully yours...
I really don't understand why Hispanic is included as a demographic separate from black and caucasian. Many hispanic people are black, many hispanic people are white and oh yes, lots of hispanic people are asian.
BLACK ADAM WAS EPIC. Does it have flaws over all? Yes. Personally, I wish characters from the JSA had more time to be fleshed out. I also wish Dr Fate didn't "die"...but it was epic the way he went out. It wasn't ground breaking but solid enough to keep going!!! We've been waiting for a solid DC film since the first Aquaman (I'm not counting Suicide Squad simply because it's not the main "heroes". Also, not counting Justice League because the theatrical release was TRASH). So I hope execs understand THIS! This is a good start to getting DC fans and the gp to believe in DC Films again! I digress. Can't wait to see/hear what's next. 🙏🏼❤️✊🏼
I do disagree with Grace about Andor that it needed to be constructed better from a business perspective. I love everything about it and wouldn't want a frame changed.
Same here. Andor is a GRIM, non-goofy, very well-written slow burn Star Wars with rich 'underworld' and 'Imperial politics' perspectives, and you get some big spikes every 3 episodes. Remember it's one of the odd 12-Episode D+ series. It's at episode 7. Andor is constructed like staggered trilogies, so episode 3 and 6 had the big peaks so far. The CGI and sets are fucking superb by modern SW standards. Great character actors in the cast to handle the solid writing.
This was a success. No one ever heard of Black Adam. To 98% of people- it's an original property. Imagine a non IP action film making this money? It's almost impossible these days. That said- it will likely somewhat fizzle out and not be a huge success in the long run.
