Dan's Hard Black Arkansas
RH Preyda Surgical Black Arkansas
Natural Whetstone Black Arkansas
All 6 x 2 x 1/2 dimensions
*Correction on the Density. I did the math wrong on the Natural Whetstone Black. Using the right numbers, the density came out as 2.77 instead of 2.04.

Out of all the razor finishers I’ve used.. The black hard or translucent Arkansas is by far my favorite.I use a synthetic progression to a coticule.Then after running the coticule I use the Ark. It leaves the razor with a smooth crazy sharp edge!

Hey Tim. Counting on the shave / honing reviews

I have 3 stones from Dan's and love them! I have the soft, fine and ultra fine(black) all in 8x3x1/5. I went with Dan's due to the high percentage of positive reviews plus the case already ha my name on it :)

Nice, I enjoy the Dan's Black as well. It's the most uniform looking stone out of the three and something about it speaks of high quality. The other ones are not bad but Dan's stands out.

Have you looked at the information on lapping and dressing the stones? The Dan’s are typically in shape to hone out of the box. Others have been said to not be flat and a little coarse for razor sharpening.

I've used Dan's out of the box and it's worked pretty well. I think it's dressed at around 400. Other ones, I've dressed it with my Atoma 600 and used it like that.

@@TimShaves how did it compare with like a slate finisher?

@@jim34morrison I'm not sure but I've had good luck with these stones.

First one seems to be a douston stone, acording to the low density and provenience. Lot of black stones from Whetstone Company are confirmed to not be novaculite, are doustone stones, they recognize that multiple times. They apertise it to "produce surgical edges", but are way far to surgical black wich ii the hardest\finer black beside tranclucent black

Hello Tim i just saw your channel..good content ! The best is Dan’s if you got a good stone.. Lap it up to 1000 or 1500 grit and it looks like glass, its so dense you can see your reflection in the stone. You kind of remind me of the guy from the burrfection channel you have the same way of explaining things
@TimShaves
@TimShaves Год назад
Thank you. I used the Dan's Black at factory surface and it's been working out. I'm not sure if lapping at higher grit is effective.. I heard that if you make it too fine, it might be less effective.
@riverrazors7915
@riverrazors7915 Год назад
@@TimShaves yes you are exactly right it makes it less effective because it’s pretty much like glass.. Dont over do it once its lapped 10 strokes is enough to refine the bevel. I think it has to do with matrix of the stone and of the steel, they interact together. Trust me i’ve made and honed hundreds of razors and this stone is the 1 i always use.

When you can check out Rough Rooster Knife Sharpening, Off the Stone & Keith V Johnson on RU-vid they all have very helpful insights and demonstrations of Arks. Great Stones you got there congrats and enjoy.

@@TimShaves Agree with rough rooster being probably the most knowledgeable person alive on using Arkansas stones. Unfortunately he got too busy with his day job and has shut down his channel.

so would you now be able to do a comparison of the three stones? which one is finer or you find to be be better?

I still haven't done an extensive testing on the three. I've been using Dan's Black for the most part and it's been working really well.
