This is why growing up I loved bratz cause of the diversity. You had Black, Asian, White, Latino. And they were all equal the main character.

I loved the Bratz dolls because they actually looked like me and people in my family (albeit exaggerated versions). I had Yasmin. As a kid I loved that they had curves, big eyes and big lips. This is what I saw in a lot of my aunts and this is what I now see in my adult self.

I think that Barbie and Bratz for their initial start had things they both succeeded in and where they had or are continuing to improve in. Like while Bratz started off the gate with diversity (albeit with all the dolls looking the same like their molds, exaggerated and inhuman which is kind of apart of its charm). When it comes to values they are more so fashion teen doll characters having fun. Meanwhile Barbie was very much early on seen more of a "role model" like yes she was into fashion but she was also a career girl: any career she had you name it. And Barbie did try with diversity with the first black doll coming out in 1967. But there were kind of side kicks not main characters unless you count the black versions of Barbie. Also in the 80s - 00s there were dolls of the world collection. And now we still have cultural dolls being made. A few decades later we have improved on giving diverse Barbies in ethnicity and skin tone equal shine. Heck there's a whole movie about Barbie finding another Barbie except this one is black and lives in Brooklyn, NYC. So she has come a long way. Bratz has come back and they are very much the same (they questionably gave Kylie Jenner a doll) but they are still fashionistas. But idk who they want to promote to seems their like older fan base that grew up with them, with some of their content online.

Dude shut up. It's not about wanting what white people have, it's about representation. These women who recount growing up without a choice aren't saying they wouldn't support a black owned doll business or line. This is the reality of our history. Instead of appreciating how black women can come together and talk about these issues, you'd rather berate them for an entirely different issue. How about your ass gets up and make a doll line for black women? Oh wait. You won't. Because you don't gaf about this conversation you're just here to cry on the behalf of white people. Looks like it took white people to give black women a platform to speak on, cause where are the black men who are supposed to be building black America? Oh yeah, they're supporting the system.

KITTY BLACK PERKINS remember her name. She's a legend. In 1980 she designed the first black Barbie which is the one with the afro and red dress. I know a certain demographic would think this documentary is "wOkE" but these conversations have been had for almost a century. A psychologist in 1947 did a doll test and found overwhelmingly more black kids preferred white dolls because they thought they were more beautiful than black ones. Anyone with half a brain cell would know why thats a problem but in case I need to say it this test was profound because it speaks to the psyche of these children. It will also lead to inferiority complexes, low self-esteem and overall negative self image. Representation is so important so in 1968 a little toy company Shindana created black dolls for kids to see themselves. They also created Chinese and Native American dolls doen the line. They did what needed to be done and their legacy will be cemented in the toy industry 💯

I’m actually happy that we’re getting a history of the first black Barbie doll as well as her creator and the process behind it. Don’t know why people are so upset over it. Barbie is popular right now and it’s good marketing . People forget that there was a time Christi didn’t exist. If you watch doll enthusiasts here on RU-vid talk about her creation it’s actually quite interesting. Maybe we can get a documentary on Bratz next so that they can explore some of the controversies surrounding them. Cause that’s a LOT to be unpackaged. No pun intended XD

“People forget that there was a time when Christie didn’t exist” You do know that Barbie came out in 1959. Four years later Barbie’s first friend Midge came out. Five years later Barbie’s second friend Christie was introduced. Barbie’s only friends were Midge and Christie for 20 YEARS until Teresa came out. Christie came out only 9 years after the original Barbie. Christie is an OG. There was pretty much never a time without her.

As A black girl who loves dolls, this is a little silly to me. Barbie isn't the end-all-be-all for dolls. Black dolls existed way before Barbie. And the idea that black people can't relate to something that is inherently "white" is silly, also they are hyping up the first black Barbie, but she was literally called "colored" Barbie... To conclude the first black Barbie was nothing special and only represented the style and "dynamite" of black AMERICANS. This is not the big thing Netflix is hyping it up to be. As a hispanic girl i never had an issue in skin in Barbie. I was aware that colour variety and versions of me where limited editions but the stories i created at play i new represented me and what i wanted. I started playing with my mom's 80s Barbies there was no colour in her collection due to lack of resource and cost. Living in south America at the time my reality exposed me to culture and skin colour variety. Came to Canada when i was 5 my parents never bought me dolls according to colour rather the dolls i got was based on detail, clothing, extra accessories, careers so i could grow my stories and have accessories to make the stories more real. The colour was just luck either the store had it or they didn't. Although now i have black, white barbies. It is not easy to find a latina barbie with a more indigenious look and natural hair colour. It doesn't bother me cause women suffer within the household or job or place of birth in that we are equal. You hear it when you talk to woman of different colours who have led different paths in life. No amount of Barbie variety will change that. That change comes from activisim from home, workplace, everyday life. That is how i have come to think of it

Not to ruin the moment but the first Black Barbie doll was created in the late 60s. Her name is Christie and she’s a friend of Barbie. I get that the intention of this Black Barbie doll is to create a black version of the Barbie character, but black girls did have Christie and Black Francine as representation back then. If the kids wanted Christie to be a glamorous fashion model like Barbie, then she would be since it all depends on their imagination. The Christie erasure is even funnier when her head mold is the first one to be based on African American features, whereas the Black Barbie featured in this documentary used a face mold (Steffi) with Caucasian features 😂
