As an aircraft mechanic, I can verify the texture is spot on. Well done!

I am an retired F/A-18 Mech myself. I've seen the texture first hand too! Thanks for the comment!

Even though I don't build military models, this really helped me in a lot of ways. Thanks for sharing.

I really enjoyed this and learned some things also. I just used this technique on the current build that I'm using as a test bed for new things. I liked the results of the black basing and it was not that hard to do. Thanks for a much needed video on this!

I’ve just recently started to use this technique and I’m finding that It’s a simple almost foolproof way to introduce tonal variations. Very nice effect on your F16 by the way.

Very interesting video. Weathering my aircraft is something that I'm just now starting to test the water on. It's sort of an art form all it's own. Thanks for sharing your time Darrin.

Hi new subscriber here. I know this is a 2018 video and i just discovered it in May 2020. Because of the Covid-19, I've started rediscovering my old hobby of scaled modelling. I got a couple of new kits (M2 bradley tank and Apache helicopter). I find your videos really helpful. Thanks!

14:55 - that result is very impressive. Whilst I'm chuffed with my results (particularly as a novice) it is miles behind yours. Well done!

I’d like to know just exactly how gloss black basing works in enhancing the reflectivity of silver or metallic finishes. Thank you

Hello, This has to be the best explanation of application to shading I’ve seen so far. Thanks for the video. Did you make the stand that your kit is resting on in this video? Thanks again.

Thank you for the kind words. No I did not make the stand I bought it on line. I recently did a review of the Masterpiece Models Bench-Mate. Check it out here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-35TThtlWnLE.html

That’s a great look/outcome. I’ve got a couple of subjects in 1/72 I’d like to try it on.

Awesome Video and very helpful. i see a lot of builders do this on the kits. i would like to try this technique on an armor kit than on a gundam mech kit.

I was doing the same thing haha. I'd love to have a little model corner in the garage, but the wife already made that into an entertainment area lol

Great video! When doing the marbling , do you always use the same color that you are using for the topcoat, or will white work as well? Thanks!

Great video, so helpful for me..... Quick question, the panel lines, do they ‘come thru’ as a natural part of your process? I will continue to watch thank you
@GrumpyModeler
@GrumpyModeler 5 лет назад
The panel line do come through as long as you use very thinned paint and build it up as I demonstrated. That said, I do use a panel wash too.

Can you use this technique when the final coat is black, do I reverse the colours, ie, white to black?
@Bob0sModelFabWorx
@Bob0sModelFabWorx 6 лет назад
This technique will be one to test with custom colors on cars too. At least that's my next objective for testing.

i have a few question. I have been out of the game since around 35 years ago and have never used a paint gun before. When it comes to undercoat, what color should you use? Is there a difference between undercoat and primer? Lastly, using Tamiya paints seems foolproof, how do you go about measuring others bands of paint, to get the right consistency?
@TheWGLOVER
@TheWGLOVER 4 года назад
They great thing is, if you get it wrong, just keep painting in the old way.
@paulwarren1173
@paulwarren1173 4 года назад
I want to try this and the video was helpful. So it’s black flat primer, random pattern lines with top coat color, then top coat color sprayed until desired effect? The several layers of top coat is thinned greater than the random squiggly lines part? I’m guessing this technique wil work on a Japanese Zero with light grey paint.
@GrumpyModeler
@GrumpyModeler 4 года назад
I think it would look great! My advice is to practice on a paint mule first and see if you like way it will look prior to committing to your kit.

Great video Darrin. Watched it twice. Question? I’ve never used Mr. color primer paint before. Do you use it straight from the bottle or do you thin it with Mr Color leveling thinner?
@GrumpyModeler
@GrumpyModeler 6 лет назад
Hey Don! You have to thin is with Mr Color Leveling Thinner. I think just like I do paint, to about the consistency of milk.

I wonder out of pure interest if this could be achieved using a good brush instead of an airbrush, just interested in if its possible. Old skool style. j

Question: Where did the name "Grumpy Modeler" come from? You don't seem very grumpy to me.
@GrumpyModeler

Chris Huffman actually comes from my Facebook Group “The Grumpy Old Scale Modeler”. I get pretty Grumpy when the carpet mister attacks or decals don’t cooperate.

Not a fan of either pre shading or black basing. Neither look like a real aircraft, I've never seen one where every single panel is lighter in the middle and fades to dark at the edges. Don'r waste time I say, just paint it then do the wash.

People need to stop preshading, it's dumb. Nobody does that besides aircraft modelers. It looks totally unrealistic. Tank modelers, car modelers etc. don't to that. Just use washing to add depth to your details.
