To be honest, not every machine has one. I finally got a machine last year that did, but I ignored it because I didn't get that machine to do heavy stuff. I use my vintage machines for heavy fabrics, and those do not have feet with plastic buttons, but they sure do sew through stuff!
Thank you for the great video. I must watch more of yours. Very helpful. I too have been sewing for years, but never had this foot with older machine. I had to buy a jig to sew jeans. The foot did come with my newer machine, and yes, it is in my manual...LOL, but having you do a demo made it more clear. Very helpful.
Thank you thank you thank you!!! I've been sewing for longer than I care to tell you, but never knew what this button was for....AND I do read my instruction manuals, but still overlooked this feature. So again, THANKS!!!
I had to take sewing in school and neither of the instructors explained this to us. The students were never given a book to read on the use of the machine. So when I had a problem it was Grandma to the rescue. She new everything when it came to sewing. That could be because she loved to sew and at one time worked for a tailor. Grandma made all of our clothes for the first 2 years we were in school as we were all so skinny and skinny pants (and other items) were not available in the ready to wear section of the stores. Thanks for the video.
Been sewing 50+ years and have never seen this foot. We used a spring type clothespin torn apart to hike up the back of the presser foot. Guess I need to introduce my 20-25 yo Kenmore to this foot. Thank you.
Thank you!! I had no idea what that button was for. I've been learning as I go. This will be really useful when I sew more pleated face masks. I've just been going slowly and raising and lowering the foot to get over the pleats.
Man,is this a game changer for me,when I bought my machine this was not explained to me,I knocked the timing out on my Juki, trying to sew thru way thick fabric. I tried your instruction today and couldn’t believe how that machine went thru all those layers.Thank you so much for posting this info, although I should have been told after the timing issue.
I have been looking all over to see what that black "spring" button was for... Well, I have to agree with you, this is in"jean"nious! Thanks from Montreal, Canada
Hahaha I love the story about your sister! I used to do the same thing; getting a running start with my needle to get over that hump! Yep, broke my needle every time! I finally realized my error when I came across the Jean-a-ma-jig at the sewing and craft store!
I do read each manual for each of my machines, but this J foot never came with any of them, so I do appreciate this info. I will purchase one for my low shank machines that use snap-on presser feet! 😊 Many thanks, Christopher❤️👍🏽👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
this is cool someone posted this in a facebook group so i had to come see. love it thanks for demonstrating it even if this video is a bit older wish i knew why my machine skipped stitches over thicker seams when they are level like if i'm sewing a bag strap and the seams are thicker or if i'm trying to top stitch a bag i have issues i lengthen my stitch length and make sure i have fresh needles and still get skipped stitches. i have a baby lock jubilant so it should be able to handle the thicker seams. so frustrating
I immediately ordered a foot right after seeing this video. I was surprised that while it fit to the shank, the button is useless, my shank has nothing to hold the button when pressed. At first i thought i bought a foot that is bigger than my usual standard foot, but comparing it with the J foot that came with the machine they're exactly the same size. I searched again and found a place that sell a set - shank and foot. They'll arrive next week. The new foot have the button on the left, the first have it on the right. I hope the new shank can accommodate the first foot. If not, i want to use it a reference to buy a low shank that can fit and be use with the foot.
There's usually not any problem with one flat felled seam with the regular foot, it's when you have it folded three times over, like the seam on a jeans leg, it can get tricky. Many models just can't cope regardless of the fancy accessories.
Your right Christopher I am an older person didn't know this. Lol. Yes I am not good a reading the manuals. Thank you. Wish we had RU-vid when I was younger.
hi ,thank you very much for your videos they made all the difference to the way i use my machinse ,i have a jukiTL-98P and a janome memorycraft 8900 qcp ,i am thinking of buying a Bernina 770 QE but i noticed that of all the machines you have demonstrated on in your video you never mention anything about any bernina is there a reason behinde that ?
Thanks for the video. It was very helpful, but some of us do read the manual. It's just that some manuals are very poorly written and don't explain well!!!
Thank you for this tutorial. I did not know about the J foot. The Brother Luminaire did not come with a printed instruction foot. It is not really easy to carry the computer to the bathroom! I have ordered a set of instruction books that I had to pay for so I'll have hard copy of the instruction book. So glad you made this tutorial.
The Baby Lock version of your machine has PDF instruction manual downloads on their website. Is this your first sewing machine? Check the Brother website to see if they have their manuals you can download.
This is so true, when you first mentioned that you don’t think people read their instruction manual, I thought “I should comment and say that I read the manual in the John”.. how funny,
It looks like the hem has been cut off of the jeans. I wonder if one can sew through this bumpy area of hem where the layers are multiplied at the flat-fell seam? When I adjust the hem of jeans I usually unfold the existing hem and finish the raw edge with neat overcasting (zigzag), reducing the bulk. The result is still attractive and effective. You do have to deal with the ski hill and I have used a hump jumper and adjusted stitch length aiming for a neat hem. My new machine has the “j” foot but have not had it long enough to really put it to use. Bumps are one of the more annoying sewing bugs!
I am female and I read through my manual, just don't recall this feature. Now I'm going to see if it's in there. 🤣 This would have helped me when I was making pillowcases with two trims the seam was very thick at the sides
The manual I have doesn't say anything about the button on the presser foot. I don't think it was a stock option. I'm going to check my Memory Craft 9000 and see if it is in that one.
I make collars and I stopped making sewn collars because my presser foot struggles to get started when sewing the hardware on because it’s so thick. I have 2 of these feet and neither will lock or level. I’ve tried everything! I don’t know if it’s too thick, if I need to already be sewing before it hits the thick seam? I’m going mad because the bottom thread just churns or the needle gets stuck because the foot won’t move over the thick fabric 🙈 any advice?!
Hello I have a presser foot but the spring is on the right side, and it has a letter R on the middle, i don't know why i can't seem to lock the spring. M using a brother gs2700. Hope you can help me figure it out. Thank you
