Let's talk about feminism, specifically African American feminism. Have you heard about this specialized social study? Do you not think such a field of thought is necessary? Let's discuss why such specialized social studies are necessarily critical to stopping oppression based on discrimination.

Thank you so much for covering Black Feminism. As a white middle class male I genuinely believe that reflections and analysis from a viewpoint radically different from my own is essential to understanding oppression, how I contribute to those systems of oppression and how to destroy them. To me feminism has always been a self evident proposition, of course women are subjugated by men, no it is not biologically determined. However it is disappointing and infuriating to read comments that blatantly disregard the entire history of half the human race and twist it to somehow make men out to be the victims, quite an unbelievable scenario! As a student of biology I can tell you that there is nothing inherent about the sexes that infers special societal status on men. And as a reader in history it is plainly obvious that women have received the worst aspects of human power and cruelty. Sadly even getting men to recognise that sexism exists is hard enough, let alone getting men to think critically about their behaviour.

This was a really thoughtful synthesis of the ideas in Collins' book. I especially appreciated the comparison to Kant's work. One of the things I really like about Collins is the way she opens up black feminist thought by expanding the definition of intellectuals beyond academics to those who may lack a college education or those who may be fiction authors or musicians. I think it's important that everyone be exposed to feminist thought, not just those who go to college.

Thanks. Feminist theory being too academic is a regular critique even within the feminist community. There has been a push to take feminism outside of academia and apply it to "the streets" in the form of activism. Activism is an enormous part of what feminism is, so that push is important. But I also appreciate the highly academic/scholarly feminist texts for a deeper understanding of the meaning behind the activism and to what end should the activism arrive to.

I'm sincerely in love with you right now! It's incredibly refreshing to witness a Black man empatheticly embrace Black feminist thought.You truly possess compassion, emotional maturity, and comprehension of contextualization. You also display a desire to witness the upliftment of all Black people (regardless of gender, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, etc), not just heterosexual , cisgender Black men. I will definitely share this video!

Finally reading the book. I am having some trouble understanding Collins’s black feminist four epistemological tenets. 1) lived experiences as a criterion of meaning 2) the use of dialogue in assessing knowledge claims 3) ethics of caring 4) ethics of personal accountability. Dude can you help me understand this?
@theblackponderer
@theblackponderer 8 лет назад
Certainly. So epistemology is the theory of knowledge. So what Collins is saying is that knowledge should be based on actual lived experiences, constructive dialogue between people, kindness/compassion, and individual responsibility. Knowledge should be based on those things more so than abstract ideas which may or may not be relevant to certain people. For example, general feminism addresses the issues of white women but does not necessarily address the concerns of black women. This is because general feminism can be based too heavily on abstract ideas rather than the actual experiences of people. So, the actual experiences of black women need to be considered (tenent 1), there needs to be a meaningful dialogue between black women and other feminists to understand the specific issues concerning black women (tenet 2), there needs to be compassion between black women and other feminists so that general feminism can begin to more adequately address the concerns of women of color (tenet 3), and both black women and other feminists need to do their part to ensure feminism is constructive for all kinds of people (tenet 4).

So very well put. Thanks dude. I hope you don't mind if I included some of your thoughts in my dissertation. i also hope that you can offer more guidance in the future is needed. I will be using black feminist thought as a theoretical framework in my research study. It is of vital importance that I understand what it entails.

I don't completely agree with your interpretations of the book... here Collins is not focusing upon black feminism but on Black feminist stand point . Moreover... u didn't mention anywhere the Struggles based on class. Patricia puts light on differences based on race, class and gender.

What is the stand point of a Black feminist? Can that not be described as Black feminism? Can you clarify the difference between "Black feminist stand point" and "Black feminism"?

5:36-6:05 Basically 'full group membership' for feminists includes the trait of 'whiteness'. Pretty much straight from the book. So, if I'm to understand this correctly, the book says that white feminists are racists. ... OK.
@theblackponderer
@theblackponderer 10 лет назад
No, what the book is saying is that general feminism does not address the specific struggles that African American women deal with. Therefore more specified versions of feminism are needed, like Black feminism, to adequately incorporate the realities of all women.
@locustpilot3858
@locustpilot3858 10 лет назад
The Black Ponderer ""The assumptions upon which full group membership are based, whiteness for feminist thought, maleness for black social and political thought..." ---how is that not racist? To be a full group member of feminist thought, you have to be white. I don't know. Sounds racist to me.
@theblackponderer
@theblackponderer 10 лет назад
Locust Pilot I think you may be confusing racism with disregard. The book isn't saying that general feminism is racist against African American women. Rather, the book is saying that general feminism disregards the reality of African American women. The book isn't saying that general feminism includes any hatred or intentional discrimination against African American women. The book is saying that general feminism is centered or focused on the struggles of white women and not on the struggles of black women, and pushing the point that the struggles of these two social groups are different. So to address this problem the book tries to educate the reader on the specific struggles of African American women and how they are different from other social groups.

From the comments, you apparently are a male "success" story. If you understood the reality of being born a Black man, you would have a different perspective. Black feminism is diametrically opposed to Black men "struggles". Lastly, discrimination is nothing more than the recognition that "appropriate" has to be determined by specific criterion. Example, children are discriminated from being adults. If you was honest with yourself, you would have noticed that it's anti-male. The point is you cannot be a man that places significance on the male experience, and not offend feminists, because they see masculinity as intrinsically enemy oriented. Challenge - do this same "analysis" with the inclusion of Black men as relevant.
@theblackponderer
@theblackponderer 6 лет назад
BK Born Shahid The text does take into consideration the Black male perspective. In fact, it incorporates the experience of all perspectives: Black, white, male, female, and all in between. One of the main arguments of the text is that social discrimination is a complex mix of race, gender, class, and economic oppression and until we acknowledge the unique experiences of all people, humanity cannot reach its full potential.
