The "rat tail" is a 4 line crown atleast 6"-8" length. That's the way I made mine. I only worked my first 6 days drilling on the floor before I was promoted to Derrickman as I'd already had a few years "workover" derricks experience. I'm oilfield trash 20 yrs, since 1974 - 1993. I never made it to Driller because I never had any floorhands that could man my pumps and pits while I would be at the brake with my driller. I thought if I worked as the "motorman" I'd be at the brake also to relieve my driller for a meal or whatever. That rig I worked motors for was too old requiring too much of my attention.
I knew a guy who worked for big dog. You could see him a few times in the show but he was an actual character. He said it was bs and they faked alot for drama purposes
