Here are four popular dancers of the Harlem Renaissance gettin' down shaking. I know two of their names Marion Egbert and Roxie Joynes Campanella, wife of baseball legend Roy Campanella.
Campbell "Skeets" Tolbert (1909-2000) - *No No Baby.* Tolbert was an American jazz clarinetist, alto saxophonist, vocalist, composer and bandleader. Tolbert got into the film business with a series of shorts known as soundies. In 1944 his ensemble recorded this sound film of the tune "No No Baby." In 1948 he became a faculty member at Texas Southern University, Houston. Eventually Tolbert owned Pied Piper Music Store in Houston, and he lived to be 91 years old.
1:40 - Wow look at Lawanda Page aka Ester from Sanford and Son.. My great grandparents said she was very popular dancer in harlem back in the day.. Fun to see the type of music my great grandparents listened to as teenagers.
Ik this is 3 yrs old, but these girls would be considered harlots back then. This is a period of time, women started to push for rights through expressing themselves (similar to the 60s with the Womants Rights and Womanist movements, and similar to now). Just say you hate women and go. Ik you are a women, but talking bout class and sophistication like tht is just sexist. Black women have always had class and sophistication. And if you thinking this era of twerking and wearing less is bad, then oh boy lemme tell you bout our ancestors in Africa.
this amazing to watch it just makes me think what it was like to be black and happy in American around that time. I wonder how shocking it was to see women dance like that back then
@@Nini-yp6bn please stfu… she’s literally saying, she enjoys watching black ppl from back then look past the racism and discrimination, and live their best lives care free like this. Stop making shit negative.
No weaves, fake nails, fake breast, butts, and our black men still loved us dearly and respected us back then. Some of them still do, even though we do not recognize the beauty in ourselves.
this is coming from a person what was born not even 30 years ago, colorism, hair shaming, and weight shaming was most def a thing back then, actually it was worse. so dont act like women didnt perm their hair or bleach their skin to try to fit into societal norms back then
You can listen to 70s 80s black pop and hiphop music but you can't deny they perm their hair and men loved the Jerry curl look and afros. Even white people curled their hair. You should watch the movie School Dayz and then come back to comment. My mom wears weave because she dyed her hair darker in the 80s and regretted it that doesnt make her less admirable because of what's on her fingernails or head. Having fake nails or weave doesn't make it excusable for any real man to be disrespectful. I'm only saying this because this is the same type of crap people say about other generations being "natural" or having "no worries" back in the day. Using the "back when there was no ____" logic just makes your ignorance show. Today their are STILL the same issues but im still gonna enjoy my youth and time as long as I'm alive and well
I know I am responsible for the images I portray to my young daughters....that is who and all I care....I about.Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.Oh by the way I am ignorant enough to have a child(daughter) in medical school and one buying her first house at 28 yrs.old
This is not a natural hair vs fake hair...permed hair etc. debate. This is a conversation about toning down things and loving what God gave us.It is just like the point that Monique tried to make...and women went in on her. Some of us will never get respect because we just don't get the point.
What’s real black women? What’s your stereotypical view of how black look? Blacks in America come in all colors and looks. The first dancer was a brown skin woman, the second one was caramel tone, the third one was very light, the last one was dark skin, wasn’t that dark enough for you? I guess because their pretty, they can’t be black, because black women aren’t pretty unless their mixed, right? If you looking for 100% black, good luck. Even in Africa, not all are 100% black.
Black people come in all shades from light to Dark. If you can’t accept that then I don’t know what to tell you. Regarding MusicandDancing4Ever he is totally right. Even in Africa black people are different. People from east Africa might have lighter skin and thin noses and People in West Africa might have Wide noses and darker skin. But that doesn’t change the fact that they are both 100% black and Beautiful!
