The DAP, an acronym for Dignity and Pride is much more than a handshake. It originated among black soldiers during the Vietnam war, who in addition to fighting for their lives on foreign soil, also faced attacks of racism, segregation, including, by some reports, being shot and killed by white U.S. soldiers during combat. The dap was developed by Black soldiers as a symbol of unity and solidarity and their commitment to looking after one another.

Also black soldiers used the dap to let each other know that they'll watch each other's back. The dap had got to the point that the military made it against military code of conduct for black soldiers to dap one another.

My grandfather taught me the DAP in late 1970’s when I was just a little kid. As a kid coming from an interracially married family living in very racist Western Oregon we got looks, especially when doing the DAP in public.

White soldiers shot at Black soldiers? I don't think so. When I was in the US Army, Black people had more influence; in fact they would cut in the front of the chow line and people would let them. We were powerless to say anything. I hated that, actually. You'd be waiting in line, almost ready to get your meal, and the Black guy in front of you would let two or three of his Black friends cut in front of you. lol And when brothers did the dap, they would expect a brother to stop what he is doing and show respect to the brother who is wanting to dap with him. You'd be in the middle of a conversation, and a brother would come by and dap with him. Also, some brothers did not dap, or tried to avoid it, becuase they thought some of it was disrespectful to their white comrades. I respected their integrity. The only part of the dap that was illegal in S. Korea in 1977, was "kill the white rabbit"; at the end of the dap, the brothers would stomp their feet in unison and interlock their arms. You know, some white guys even did the dap. lol
