Many people say that this game has no game difficulty options. In fact, if you defeat the Boss within a certain period of time, its second combat form will be triggered. If you just barely defeat the Boss, it will not be triggered. This is the adaptive difficulty of this game. Additional information: not all bosses have this setting. From the offline trial, the monkey boss triggers the second combat form after reaching a certain amount of health within a specific time frame. The second combat form switches the battle scene, the boss will grow wings, its attack speed and damage will increase, and its skill form will be slightly altered. The tiger boss has a second combat form, but few players have experienced it in the offline trial. This information is based on the trial version, and I'm unsure if the official release will modify this aspect.
For anyone wondering about PS5 performance. I bought the game yesterday and played the entire first chapter and the beginning of the second chapter. Aside from the very intro (which, to be fair, is completely bonkers) the FPS has been a very stable 55-60 FPS on performance mode. It very rarely hindered the experience in any way. I would definitely recommend turning off Motion Blur for the best experience. While it could be a tad better, the game is completely playable on PS5. As for difficulty, it is significantly more forgiving than a game like Elden Ring. I definitely think that Game Science wanted the player to feel more 'Cool' than 'Fragile'.
I love the game just completed it on PS5 and while you're right that it's playable, the visuals and graphics are awful. It really needs to be patched and polished on ps5. The frame rates constantly dip and the visuals suffer massively because they've used frame generation to get it up to an artificial 60fps which causes so many blurred textures and backgrounds. I really hope they'll put some serious work into improving performance and visuals on ps5 as, like I said, I did love the game it could be a genuine great but its current performance on ps5 is nowhere near good enough given the capabilities of next gen hardware.

If they fail to do so, on principle, I would pass on any dlc as difficult as that may be. What they’ve made is a potential masterpiece, I genuinely love it, but its current state on console is wholly unacceptable.

Let’s just all keep in mind this is the first 3A game with a dev team around 140 people. From a company that only made 2 mobile games before. Also NG+ at launch.
No. Shitty game stays shitty game. If a game is released it needs a minimum quality. The cam bugs are not alright. That's bullshit and bad work. Nothing triple A when you have such bugs. NG+? No need for that. No advantage with that. If the NG+ has any bonuses compared to the normal start except taking over items and skills...include that into the normal game and don't try to force me to play a second time your boring game. I'm not saying the game is boring. But who does that to NG+ says it himself. Stutter? Would like to know what the graphic settings are. Don't tell me about stutter when you max out everything. If you can have a good and stable game performance with good looking settings. That's enough...except you can tell that it's not because of high level of graphic quality but it's bad coding or bad conversion. A game has to be finished on release. No first day patches. No things that are not working. That's all bullshit. NG+ is a good way for the industry to increase the Steam statistic as you keep players for a longer time playing. But having bugs...well. People like to just give bullshit games back on steam and be done with it. So no. Just having 2 mobile games done before doesn't matter. In two months it can matter when I say "Fantastic game. Never thought a company that made just 2 mobile games before could get such a master piece done." but that has nothing to do with how good the game has to be on release.
If you feel like youre not getting pulled into the lore/story enough, check out the journal. They really went into great depth with it. Every single enemy from minor to major has some kind of backstory or related lore in the journal if you expand it to read it all.

It's very interesting seeing the tidal wave hit Steam, it must be a very patriotic/proud feeling having a game that can related to far more easily than one built on European history
Chinese mythology seems cool to me because I know nothing about it, it's like watching Spirited Away for the first time, it's like being a child again and taste the world for the first time, everything is new and exciting.
I'm happy to hear this game doesn't have a spider web of crafting, skill tree crap. I really feel see games add so much of that to unnecessarily slow down progress and make the game a huge chore.

@@robertocurrlos7470 there are two spears in the game. you probably rushed the game w/o doing side quests, so it's your loss. and to make it lore accurate, wukong uses a stick only. a staff is also the signature weapon for martial monks, who abide by buddist principles, refrain from using lethal weapons such as swords.
That ‘Stick’ the monkey use all the time , is a ‘God's needle’ in the sea which made for hold the ocean. So that stick can shrink or expand to fit the tide. It's very powerful when MonkeyKing waving it. Btw, all the building you see in the game, can be found in China, all existent as refurbished or protected.

Couldn’t be happier about a more linear type game. My backlog is so full of open world games that I’ll probably never finish completely because I simply don’t have the time to sink into them. A nice 20 hr linear game, that looks this good and hopefully plays as good as it looks, would be a breath of fresh air
Although this is a linear game, it actually takes more than 40 hours to clear the level for the first time, even if it is not a full collection and exploration, and 80 hours to complete all tasks and full collection. Some Chinese trial media only discovered that there are many more after completing the level. The BOSS has never been defeated because there is no strategy, and they don’t know how to trigger it or where the BOSS is.
Playing this game on Geforce Now with ultimate subscription, 2k monitor, ray tracing on very high, DLSS quality and everything on cinematic. Runs at about 80-100fps and quite stable. About 10hours in, deep into chapter two. Had no big frame drops in fights, no bugs or anything worth mentioning. Been a smooth blast to play.

The developer, Game Science, has only developed mobile games in the past. At the start of the project, Black Myth Wukong, the development team only has over 30 people, and until now there are just over 140 people. Considering the experience and size of the development team, I think Black Myth Wukong has far exceeded expectations.
A little back-story, the core development memebers used to work in Tencent, on an MMORPG named 斗战神, which has many elements from Journey to the West. The project was a hit at the time but later went south because they can't pump up the high-quality updates fast enough (it's an MMO in the end). This led to decreased revenue, and thus Tencent placed more monetization in the game to increase revenue. Eventually, the devs decided to leave Tencent, and go separate ways, eventually leading to the birth of Game Science, and Black Myth: Wukong.
Stellar Blade, Black Myth: Wukong, the fact that mobile game studios are releasing straight up bangers like these two as their first console games is mind blowing. It’s like stumbling on pure gold. As an Australian Aboriginal I used to watch journey to the west on ABC after school and late on the weekends on SBS when I saw the game I didn’t hesitate to buy it because I loved watching it back in my childhood
As excited as i am for this game from a gameplay perspective, im unironically really happy for our chinese friends to have a big AAA game of one of their childhood things. Sun Wukong to chinese people is kinda like superman/spiderman to americans. Its one of their childhood heroes. The Journey to the West was an awesome novel. Im excited to see this adaptation of it.

A DEBUT from a really small dev team, yeah, they should shine moving forward. It has issues, technical ones mostly, and they're fixable I suppose. But people seem to be ignoring just how small this team is. If this sells well, we should see bigger things from them.
I think the developer purposely not include the map in the game because in the novel my boys were travelling to the west without knowing what dangers lie ahead of them.

For some Lore, Wukong is a monkey that came out of a rock in an Island full of monkeys. I’m not sure but he has very gifted strength and took over the entire Island after a while he grew bored and decided to head on a Journey to become stronger. He spends some time in a dojo learning the ways of shapeshifting and other stuff then he gets a bunch of weapons and creates chaos in the heavens. Then Buddha is annoyed and traps him under a mountain until one day a chosen monk is sent to Wukong so Wukong can guide the Monk east. During their way they get three other companions. Another monk, a pig person, and a horse that can become a dragon(I think). I’m not sure when this story takes place but it is probably after Wukong left the monkey Island. Note: I am doing this through memory so I glossed over a lot of important details Edit: He stole his weapon from a sea god.
It's less steal but more that the sea god be like, if you can pull out this Excalibur then it's yours, thinking WuKong won't be able to do it, but then he actually pulled it out and took it.

I like this game so much more than any souls game. I love that the only negative to dying is you have to do it over. You keep everything always. So it's all about exploration and progression. The fact that you can reroll all your stats anytime makes it AMAZING and a part of the game. You often have to reroll your entire build to beat a boss. You also get to reroll pills later. Which is also amazing for custom builds on the fly. Overall, this is the best action game I've played in a while and it's SO DAMN SATISFYING when you finally beat that boss you've spent hours grinding on!
There are over 100+ normal monsters with most of them being completely unique, 50+ unique elite bosses, and 30+ unique final bosses. I can't see any game will spend that huge amount of time designing this in such a short time span.

A friend of mine from Geekerwan (a Chinese tech channel) told me earlier today that Game Science has patched their reviewer's copy and frame rates no longer drop during combat. They tested it with a 2nd gen Core i5 (far weaker than most CPUs you see today) and a GTX 1060 6G and it runs at ~45fps at mid settings. Definitely good news for gamers without a shiny brand new flagship PC😊 Also as far as I know none of the Chinese reviewers have see crashes so the crash problem *might* have to do with localization. Hopefully GS can solve the problem (if it really is their fault, I also suspect Intel chips for the crash😅) soon so that everyone can enjoy this incredible game❤

I originally was hyped because of the soulslike elements, but was pleasantly surprised by the PS/PS2 GoW style action adventure game it is. I like the style of play with the semi-frustrating boss difficulty. I get why people wouldn't like it, because of the way it was presented, but I'm having a ton of fun with it (on PC) and can't wait for each subsequent chapter

Not everything is so sinister. I watch pretty much every before you by and I agree that his tone did actually seema bit more excited than normal. Seems like the consensus on the game is pretty clear. The in game journal that makes an entry every time you fight a new enemy is very very underrated. It’s where most of the story and lore is. Worth taking some time out of combat to read about the characters and their relationship to the bosses and captains
The gameplay design is very clever. Most ACT games offer you multiple weapons to experience different styles, encouraging you to try different ways to rush boss, but the little monkey only wields a staff. That's probably why Game Science introduces the transformation system to let you shapeshift and cast your enemy's skill, which NATURALLY brings out the varigated enemies (like you said, middle bosses) of huge amount. Brillant design.
I mean.. the monkey king in lore only wields a staff but can transform into 72 different creatures for different purposes. So no, it is not an invention by game science, that's just sun wukong...

Well there are over 10+ different type of staff with various stats & effect and then you have 3 different skill tree paths for different staff skills/technique to master. So that itself is very unique and far better to have many different weapon but just doing similar combos. Then you also have 3 skill tree paths for secondary spells as well as 3 different basic physical condition skill tree paths. It has more than enough for an action RPG while not to be boring and not too complicated either.

I wish I had seen this before I bought it. Love the game. Seems cool. I just didn’t know understand that it was one of those “lose a million times until you learn the attack pattern” kind of games. I don’t really play that dark souls and Elden rings stuff. I assumed this would be more like ghost of Tsushima. I don’t have a problem with it. It’s just that I’m more of a causal gamer and thanks to work, I don’t really have the time to invest to “master” this. Think I’m going to ask my neighbors permission to give my copy to their kids. Their kids love stuff like this.
This game and Stellar Blade are really bringing back the character action genre! Love to see it, especially from newer studios coming out of the gate hot.
I enjoyed Heavenly Sword & Enslaved on PS3, Genji was PS2, if I recall correctly. I think this game may have issues on console if it's struggling a little on PC, which is a shame. Hopefully, with patches, it will run well enough.

The Japanese made the show based on the Chinese story, and it became a cult classic in Australia. I think the issue regarding the vague story bits might just be that the game is more catered to a Chinese audience or rather those who grew up with the JTTW story. In other words, the game assumes that you already know the story. That still doesn't justify the lack of clarity in the game's story, and it would really be helpful if it was more friendly to those who have never read JTTW. Especially when the game is called *Black Myth* : Wukong ( *黑神* :悟空) implying that the game takes a darker twist to the original JTTW tale, making it more confusing for those who don't even know the original story. Other than that I have been waiting for this game for about four years and I can't wait to play what is essentially my childhood obsession brought to life as a video game! 让我们一起去西游记吧！！！
My wife is Taiwanese, our son is half, and ever since he started going to school in the US, it's been hard to keep him speaking Mandarin. I'm gonna play this game in it's original language to get him stoked on his Mom's culture and show him that there's so much badass art and media from around the world. That America in no way has a monopoly on cool.
I'm not entirely certain if the game is meant to be a prequel, sequel or a variant interpretation of the novel. My understanding of the novel was that the monkey king was one of three bodyguards who followed a buddhist. The monkey king being instructed by Heaven as penance for his pranks and the others were coerced by the monkey king to do penance for their wrong doings. I'm looking forward to this as the monkey king was essentially the first mythic hero I grew up with so even if it turns out that you're playing his kid or clone I think it'll be a good time.

From what I heard its based on one of the chapters where there was an evil Wukong called Six Eared Macaque, a monkey also born from similar circumstances as the real Wukong so they have similar powers. In the end nobody can tell them apart so they fought in front of the Buddha and the Buddha being Buddha captured the evil Wukong. So in this game, you play as the Six Eared Macaque which is a pretty cool take. This was what the chinese internet was thinking the game was about before the released though. Now that it's released, Idk if it's based on this story.

The original work is filled with deep reflections and sharp satire on class, religion, and power struggles. Sun Wukong is almost every Chinese child’s superhero, as he represents a symbol of wisdom and free-spirited justice. As we grow older, we can see even more within the book-the rules that govern the world seem to have remained unchanged for thousands of years. I'm glad that this classic can be continued in such a form.

The dialogue in the game often resembles Shakespearean language-elegant and meaningful, but not something people use in modern times. The lines are more concise yet carry deeper meaning. For those who aren't familiar with the 'Journey to the West' novel, I highly recommend at least go through the basic story, especially the characters you encounter in the game - just like what you do with God of War series. It really enhances the lore. Anyway, I hope Game Science partners with a good localization team so everyone can fully appreciate the story.
That's also why I'm so excited someone is making a Vietnamese version. The novel and the live action TV series in the 80s is probably among the most popular Chinese media in Vietnam. Plus everything sounds much more grand and elegant even in the Vietnamese way of pronouncing Chinese, something that English lacks or got little cultural context of.

@@k.m603 This will make more sense if you actually know the story of Journey to the West, cos this is a remake of it without most of the Main Cast (Tang monk, Piggy, Sandy and White Dragon Horse). From one of the first trailers in around 2020, the narrator said "What if Journey to the West never happened? What if the monkey died along the way? What if they never actually made it to the West (India)? This is a story of Journey to the West you've never heard before." I mean it's not a prerequisite in this case, but it will help you appreciate and understand the story better imo Edit: typo sry
Tips: If you know Dragon Ball, Goku was basically Wukong when he was a child. He got a tail. He used a staff that lengthen and shorten. In some SEA countries, Goku name was basically translated to Wukong. So I guess if you find glowing spheres in the game, or if the monkey turns gold and buff, you know what that is.

Is the lack of customization the reason why it’s not a soulslike? Because it’s pretty similar to souls games to me. It seems like a similar style of game as Bloodborne other than the setting and lack of customization
@@gabriellucio5685 There are no "souls" to collect for exp and you don't lose them when you die. The only similarity is that you level up at bonfires and respawn there.

I think a small addition that wouldve been cool are small cutscenes where they explain the lore of each boss, who are usually creatures of eastern myth. The cutscenes wouldve been really cool even if it was just a small narration with artworks.
true. I don't think the developers considered enough for players who don't know the original stories of WuKong. Cuz for Chinese players, the game is filled with characters, storylines, and elements that we have know since we were children. For us it's more like "ah, isn't that XXX? I know this monster/place/story " but for players who don't know the stories, it can be quite confusing.

Finally, a person with a great review that I can rely on. When you made the point that it's not a soul's like game, that made my day. But I really enjoyed the review. Can't wait to get it on steam. I've been waiting for this game to come out since I heard about it.

I think the gameplay is quite interesting in this one, they took the Journey to the West Sun Wukong powers and seem to have implemented them as well as they could (I don't expect all 72 transformations). I feel like this has that "easy to learn, hard to master" quality to its combat, where you can really look cool and powerful once you're able to not only remember to use your abilities, but also know how to use them strategically. At least that's what it feels like watching some recent gameplay, it seems no two playstyles are alike.
Been out of the AAA space for a while (I just like indie games is all), but man am I happy to see Gameranx is still doing these. Thanks for all you do Jake!
@Ragssssss I'm not sure what you are getting at with that? If you are saying they are not similar due to "clunky" Well I didn't say the controls are identical. The game is light on the rpg and leans on action. The whole dodge thing mentioned about fighting. Those being reasons I see as being like the witcher Way it looks to me is very much witcher anyway. Fighting different monster in 3rd person hack and slash with rolling on the floor. I'm not trying to convince anyone to dislike the new thing, I like many enjoy the wicther
Fun fact, early Son Goku was losely base on Son Wu Kung. The size shifting stuff the Son Wu Kung hold is same as Son Goku has, the flying cloud (Nimbus).. the monkey king story goes deeper if you follow the real Mythology. All and all it was best childhood show to me.. I am sure the game will be awesome and do justice to the show..👏👏👏
@@Adamwillbefree No, the myth of monkey god has already been localized and passed around in China before the book was written, Sun Wukong is based on the localized folklore version which at that point it's way too different than it's Monkey god Hanuman. A lot of gods spread to China with Buddhism, but Buddhism has been around in China for too long it become its own thing, a lot of gods/buddha has gone though different version, some even got split into two different gods. It would be inaccurate to say the character it's inspire by Indian myth.

Hanuma was a real badass.. use to listen to those stories from my grandma when I was little.. Hanuma has this mace, and Chinese's Son Wu Kung has a staff (Bo staff/ brace staff). Son Wu Kung story dated back to 1600s, do you know that Son Wu Kung can make clones from his hairs? That kind of proves DNA and etc.. it is so amazing that their understanding and knowledge anatomy and chemistry were so advanced. Of course, modern science would call it a myth and find a way to dismiss it because they wamt to be the one that discovered and invented everything.
Hey guys I just want to thank you for doing these Before you buy videos they've helped me make a decision on games I'm uncertain on and even though I know that's the point of them with all other expenses in life it's better than paying 50 to 70 bucks for a game and realizing it's bad...I shouldn't be buying games but I do anyway 😅

In this review one of the things mentioned by Jake is the MAP, or lack there of, and how it "REALLY NEEDS" one. This stood out to me, and after playing awhile, I completely DISagree... Though I do understand. Because, when you first start playing it can be a bit off-putting not having a map in the upper left hand corner, or at the touch of a button, with Zoom and 50 different Icons and a Legend, Pins, and Fast-Travel Points. I'd gotten so used to having that, that I'd forgotten what a game/puzzle feels like without that CRUTCH!? Well, I'll tell you, it's REFRESHING!!! It's so cool to unknowingly EXPLORE! Walking around and taking mental notes on where things are, and where you've been, and where to go next, it's just incredible. And I believe that it was done intentionally, with that in mind. This game MAKES you think and that's probably the BEST part of it.
The fact you showed gameplay and almost every scene had a different enemy type or boss is mind blowing to me. Even when God of war Ragnarok couldn’t even keep up when they took criticism from the first game for having stale enemy types. (Still love the GoW series though). Can’t wait to play this
I wish they had added a difficulties, great game, probably one of the best game this year, but not everybody has the time to spend the whole day fighting the same boss haha I know I'm not the only one haha still love the game 🤙
I'm excited for this and have been for years but 2 things annoy me: 1. I'm sick of games releasing in an unfinished state and not being ready at launch (Probably at the Publishers insistence) 2. A physical disc not being available despite a physical presence (I HATE this practice, it's really scummy) However the advantage to this is that we may get a physical with patches on the disc but i'm not going to stand for it, it needs to be called out
I'm happy to wait as hopefully in that time, bugs are sorted & it will be at a good sale price. I think a premium physical release is coming with everything but a disc, just a code. Those editions aren't worth it for me personally.
I love asian webnovels. Even though I've never read JTTW, the Sun Wukong gets so many mentions (ORV, etc) that I'm really hyped for a game to finally tackle asian mythology !

You may like Clash: Artifacts of Chaos too. Came out in 2023. You play as an absolute gnarly freak of a creature named Pseudo who looks like a sore, nail-less thumb with weird hairs for a head and a body like a gnorpy wrinkled carrot. But the dude's also a martial arts hermit and throughout the game you can find different martial arts styles and individual attacks to assign to Pseudo. All of them have unique animation movesets. Slash keeps a lower profile and hits wider, Mammoth uses double haymakers and elbows to simulate the trunk and stompy legs and hits hardest of all Stances, Lightning Stance is like Muay Thai, and there's more that i won't spoil. It's a prequel to the Zeno Clash series and got a *really* striking art style and direction. One of the biggest complaints people had is that they get lost a lot. But looking around is rewarding because you can find figurines, which are essentially upgrade points for individual Stances and attacks. It's a somewhat... humble game. The setting isn't necessarily bombastic, but it's simply *good* in what it does. Gameplay, story, and especially writing, music and atmosphere. Very warmly recommend it.
Finally, beat this so I can comment lol. This is my GOTY easily, I LOVE this game, they went above and beyond on the things that I love in video games. May not be flawless but it's a perfect game for me.

@@mindethereal6627I haven't managed to read past Chapter 2 of the Journey to the West, but Chapter 1 states that "欲知造化会元功，须看西游释厄传", which roughly translates to "if you want to understand the changes of the world/self, you've got to read the Journey to the West" 😂. So there's a view that the book is about understanding the world / self.

I love that we're getting more games that are inspired from Asian culture and histories. I just wish games would do the same for African, South american, etc. There's so much potential there.
I think as game development becomes a more viable career path in south america and african countries, at least for some of them, we'll start to see a bit more of that
I mean, European countries make games about European culture, Asian countries make games about Asian culture, American countries make games about American culture, but African countries and South American countries just don't make a lot of games
Fun fact, north east south and west is 北东南西 (bei, dong, nan, xi). So we have Beijing, Dongjing (Tokyo), Nanjing, but we don't have Xijing because of journey to the west, Wukong claimed Xijing, so we don't have it on our map.

I'm disappointed to hear that there isn't more narrative as the appeal of this game is the lore. At least the environments and character bosses look good. I'll probably wait until I hear more console reviews as I'll be getting this on PS5. I was a huge fan of the TV show Monkey as a kid in the 80's which is basically the appeal here for me.
Ye same. I know it’s not strictly a souls like but we’re getting soo many now and devs just don’t change anything but the setting. To the average consumers fromsoft games have awful story telling so you’d think it’d be the easy way to have an edge over them by making decent story but nope, they tend to copy the lack of story hand holding but then don’t really do the environment/item description story telling either.
It may taint the original source material and give the wrong thoughts and impressions. Best way i think is to read the original novel after/before you finish the game.
