To cut a stone would be the biggest fear of my life lol. I'd be so scared to mess up something so beautiful that cannot be recreated. Absolutely stunning piece.

Instead of grinding off half of the stone, could no attempt be made to conserve that half? My imagination jumps to patient explorers with coping saws or anything other than grinding it off with a large wheel. Who was it said that if all the tools you have is a hammer, then any problem presents itself as a nail? No slight intended to these learned and experienced gem hunters who know vastly more than me. Enjoyed the video.

My heart sinks the more it grinds....i skipped to the end ..sand blasting any better.....

The thing I dont like about cutting rough Opals into gems: rough tends to mean you can see some color in the rough piece, but it could actually be somewhat worthless, you dont know until you start grinding it down, by that time you've got 5 to 8 hundred bucks invested, plus money for infrastructure. Good luck.

Red in a black opal is amazing.. Your right about red being rare.. From my limited experience in black opal it tends to run in greens and blues.

Beautiful stone. It could make two perfect stones but it's tough to say if it values more as one with a slight flaw or two perfect gem stones. I'd definitely leave it now that it's at a finish. If it was going to be cut it would have been well before.
