Yeah, but then he realized people watch those videos more and you gotta make those dollars. Fuck personal integrity... Shill, shill, shill. This RU-vid game isn't a long term career.
As a Massachusetts resident, it's terrible. Trust me. Ok theater, but you literally need to walk through a crappy and linear IKEA store to get to the theater. It's irritating.
Henry K. Hill Yeah revenge is cool. But Black Panther has T’Challa realize that his father was an extremely flawed man who stuck to ideals more than doing the right thing. Realizing that his country’s system was selfish. And how he can be a better man and help the rest of the world. How is a revenge story more interesting than that?
I would have to agree - as little as BP was in Civil War, his screen time was FAR better than the entire BP movie. Just the action sequences alone puts CW ahead... and don't get me started on the fantastic costume in CW they changed out for the Deus Ex Machina version in BP!
black panther: "help us fight" mountain dude king: "no" also mountain dude king: *shows up at critical moment creating a dumb ex machina, while contradicting his answer without ever justifying him finally deciding to help, and also disappearing right after, without even a word spoken*
He helped/ showed up because he respects tchalla and kind of owes him a favor for sparing his life when he easily could have killed him in the ceremonial battle
It's not a Deus Ex Machina, since he was already a character in the film. It's like saying Han Solo saving Luke at the end of A New Hope is a Deus Ex Machina.
Ti My a lot of people don't understand rotten tomatoes , they see it and just think it's a average rating of critics giving it 97% out of 100. The actual average rating from RT that Steve Rogers posted above fits the movie. Enjoyable, well made, not close to perfect.

As a black person who didn't know anything about all the shit revolving around the movie, I thought it was fine, not amazing, not absolutely terrible, just...fine
And now, Black Panther has won *three* Oscars. Apocalypse Now has won two. 2001 A Space Odyssey has won one. The Shining has won zero. Full Metal Jacket has won zero. Taxi Driver has won zero. Shawshank Redemption has won zero. Hitchcock's entire filmography has won zero. Yes, Black Panther has won as many Oscars as all those movies *combined* . Let that sink in for a second.
Those 3 awards it won made sense had very little to do with politics. Visual Effects/Production/Score. Shawshank Redemption could've won if everyone didn't like Forest Gump more, Malcolm X could've won if they didn't like that other movie better, but Training Day won tho!
@@daustin8888 "Terrible" definitely disagree with you on that, for the most part of the film it was on point I agree with most that it was at it's worst during the 3rd act. But I'm curios...who would you have given the award to instead?!
marvel movies take away creative control from the directors. it would be more interesting if each one had its own style. I'm still pissed we didn't get an edgar wright Antman.
If you're not bothered to watch the whole video just know: 1.He wasn't racist at all 2. Didn't use any racial slurs 3.Gave a justified review of why it wasn't his favourite marvel film 4. At the end he said it was 10/10 😂
Bolaji Jabez firstly I don't think I'm smart- I know, secondly wtf kind of point are you even trying to make, where is the evidence to back up your statement? Cos I have proof of the black people blatantly lying about the hate they're receiving just cos they're salty. Why is it when we have something good we have to take it away from others too, everyone is allowed to enjoy this movie, we're just happier cos there's finally some representation.
Bolaji Jabez WHERE?? In this comment has none so unless ur trying to comment on this one to gain my attention and not the other one which makes absolutely no sense, even in the others I said not all blacks I made that very clear cos I knew ppl would take offence ffs 🤦🏾♀️
I'm African and I disliked Black Panther. Maybe African Americans felt differently. It felt like another superhero movie that was pandering to the audience. I hated the 'African' accents. I only watched it because of the hype and I love Lupita. 254 Represent! OMG I was cringing too every time Killmonger opened his damn mouth.
I don't know if you've seen any interviews or anything, but Chadwick Boseman actually explained where the accent came from. Obvi that doesn't have to influence your opinion at all, but I'm just wondering if you did
Honestly I thought Black Panther was just ok on first viewing, but I enjoyed the action sequences, visuals, and character arcs a lot more on repeat viewing. I would even say I've grown to love it. Won't say it's like that for everyone though
Klaw was a much more interesting villain than Killmonger. Also we've seen Black Panther in the Infinity War trailer, so when they pretend he dies it really doesn't hit
Them pretending any main character in a Marvel movie will die never hits because it is Marvel (Until Infinity War... Maybe?). Also Klaw was just entertaining, no real depth to him. He has depth in the comics, but they clearly didn't care to show it in the movie.
Can somebody explain to me the logic of the people just accepting that stranger as their king because tradition, but when they see that the challenge isn't over, they suddenly decide that the new guy is worth following NOT TO MENTION HE KILLED A GUY NOT EVEN INVOLVED IN THE FIGHT WHICH WOULD DEFINITELY BE A CRIME TO THEM WHAT?!
Bolaji Jabez He is, but nobody knows him. What I mean is why would they trust him? At first it was understandable to an extent but when T'Challa came back and declared the challenge to be incomplete and people attacked him anyway, that throws all their traditions out of the window.
They don't trust him. He is basically strong arming them into becoming the ruler. And no, the battle did not involve throwing their traditions out of the window.
@@VintageDefectors69 the army attacked because the border tribe's leader liked Killmomger's form of leadership better because he sees it as something that gets results, so he attacks TChalla. Besides, the whole challenge thing did kind of end, so regardless of how he came back from what they considered the dead, the challenge was basically over.
Hopingover Leavesinfall Isn’t the tradition that the strongest becomes the leader in the beginning it was stated if the monkey guy (I forgot is name) won then he would be king.
Hey Ralph, I'm from Massachusetts, and I've been to Jordan's Furniture. I don't really like the theater either. Whenever all the other theaters are sold out, my family and friends will go to Jordan's, and while waiting for the movie, we'll play a game where we search the store for overpriced items, cover up the tags, and then have everyone else guess the price. If nobody can successfully guess the price, you win. When going to so Black Panther, I won after finding a fake plastic potted plant... for $300. Jesus Christ! It's madness! And then they have the balls to try to sell you furniture IN THE THEATER after having to walk through a crappy version of IKEA to get to the actual theater. Anyway, I empathize with you after your visit to Jordan's Furniture. Keep it up!
I liked that one. Was much better than the "what are those???" joke just prior. I don't even get why they kept the former in there. That was 2 shoe related jokes in the span of half a minute.
I fell asleep during the club sequence, and woke up during the part where Andy serkis died. This was probably the most boring marvel movie iv ever seen and I’m a big fan of them
See, this is why I watch Ralph. Movie reviewers are all around the place on websites with many mixed opinions. Ralph both finds the pros and cons of each movie with his reviews. Plus I love his satire-driven videos about the best/worst movies of the year.
The thing is with that joke was that all the adults in the audience laughed at it without their knowledge of its meme status Though it was cringe I think that it was intended more as an actual joke than a meme reference
The problem that a few people seem to be having that joke is baffling to me. That's a pretty damn tame joke that fits in the context of how a sister and brother would interact with that sister being more modern and less respectful of the traditions of the country. It's like you just had to pick random joke and arbitrarily deciding it is bad to continue the "DAE jokes are dumb" narrative.
David B Andrews First of all, you don't know what a memo is apparently. Second, "she was up to date and even ahead of technology and trends" That's literally why it makes sense lmfao
Those Rhino's were the worst CGI I recall seeing in a Marvel film. Even when there was little to no movement, it was obviously CGI and didn't blend into the scene at all.
Danny Devito It's the worst feeling. You know what. I'm not going to see the movie but I bought a ticket anyway just to support the Marvel franchise as a whole. I think with black panther, I would enjoy it more by not watching it. It's kind of like when you were a kid and you thought Santa Clause was amazing and mysterious until you met him and realized it was just your parents buying all the stuff. I like not knowing better in this case.
The only hype this movie received was around it being an all black cast. So it pretty much did that. It's acclaim has nothing to do with why it was hyped.
Yeah, it really is. It doesn't have all the anti-African stereotypes of savage tribes and terrorist criminals that BP has. It even does apologia to the freaking Central "I took down democratically elected African governments and replaced them with fascist regimes" Intelligence Agency.
@@quqbalam5089 If the movie is about a king, don't watch it if you can't take different form of goverments. I'm not a fan of everything that isn't a documentary, but he's portrayed as someone who cares for his people. If you respect a nation that supports genocide because it was voted democratically and believe that people should call T'Challa out on it, you must have liked the Nazis.
I found Killmonger to be the most well developed character. His motivation wasn't to kill all white people, it was to arm the oppressed people with their vibranium weapons so they can fight their oppressors and Black Panther wasn't saying it was meesed up, Black Panther just didn't want to put their OP weapons out there because Wakanda never fought a war they didn't have to. Hell even at the end of the film *SPOILERS* Black Panther goes ahead and does what Killmonger wanted to do in the first place except much less violent. They never mentioned any race nor did they even show any white person oppresing hell even communicating with the oppressed people in the film.
Hao Jia Jing Yea a lot of things in this review was misinformed “black panther took bullets to the face but can’t take daggers? There’s no tension” this point pretty much proves he wasn’t giving this movie a chance since he forgot about the vibranium armor that allowed him to tank the bullets in the first place. When he was hurt against the daggers it was either when he wasn’t able to use his suit or fighting against another man with the same capabilities. So yeah dude was either asleep watching movie or high as fuck.
Kick Inna Yuh Rass His plan isn't to create an army of oppressed people to take down the government and oppress white people, it was just to arm the people who don't have enough to fight back. Those were his people because he didn't grow up in Wakanda and he just wants to free them from oppression.
Angelo The Righteous Fool Tbh I love Ralph and his videos but I instantly questioned his reel it in when he said Michael B Jordan was the weakest actor and he didn't point out the lazy editing. Like why would a secret korean night club be playing the weeknd when barely any americans go there? Like every american they see is instantly one of Claw's men, and why does the music just suddenly stop playing when Claw starts talking to the agent dude? and the bad dialogue and so on.
Well to be fair, I think almost all of the major critics on RU-vid are saying basically the same thing as Ralph. "It's good but overrated", so he's far from the only 'sane' voice, from your perspective.
Haha I feel like you contradicted yourself in that very same sentence/ I'm accused of not knowing what an opinion is, meanwhile you're discrediting my opinion of ralph being a sane voice. You do you though thats all that matters.
I guess we just have different sources, Mark Kermode regards this as an excellent movie with little to no flaws, and he is one of the biggest UK film critics if not the biggest. But you do have a point, YMS and Chris agree with ralph on most aspects. However, most main stream critics are praising this movie beyond belief purely on Identity politics and is frustrating to see.
It was a fun movie but thats it. Its FUN. i wouldn't call it GREAT. The vibranium enriched culture is pretty interesting. But thats really it. There is NO tension the villan is somwhat interesting but the characters theme is just SO TONE DEAF for whats going on.
Lol I don't know why everyone is so quick to rush to politics, maybe I can relate to certain aspects of a movie because of who I am, nothing about that is political.
@@MusOfficial323 if you've managed to enjoy some parts of this movie regardless of politics - good for you. You can't deny this movie is full of politics, though. And for many people, that's a turn off.
@@FelineElaj I mean, i feel like it's more so people just personally connecting it to politics because you can connect anything to politics nowadays because there's a political name for everything, but I don't see it as a movie with a deliberately political message.
@@MusOfficial323 I don't know the minds of those who made this movie, so I can't say for sure if the political message in it is deliberate or not. But I know it's there. I mean, it's plain as day. Personally, I'm sick of it. I don't want politics, at least this kind of ham-fisted and biased politics, in my entertainment. Problem is, it's almost everywhere nowadays. After super-heroes, comic books and video games went mainstream, they became a tool for people with certain ideologies to spread their message instead of telling compelling stories. They are even open about it. And you know what, I'd even say "let them", if they'd use their own, original content to do it. But no, they need to use already established and popular characters and franchises. That's my main beef with such people.
I completely agree Black Panther was a good film. Its just it doesn't deserve all the praise it got. 3/3 websites agree Black Panthers the best Marvel movie; Better then Avengers 1, Homecoming and Ragnarok which isn't, in my opinion, true. P.S I asked my friend what his favorite film was, setting up a conversation about how overrated this movie was, and he said black panther. If you like Black Panther, please explain why BP is better then Chris Nolan’s Batman Trilogy
Isn't that the point? It was supposed to be a moment where we thought, "Oh shit", but we all thought, he's literally going to show up in ten minutes and be fine.
That doesn't really count as predictable. Did you have that exact same feeling when they did it with Cesar in Dawn of the planet of the apes? If you've seen any movie ever you'd know It's meant to be an obstacle, the movie is not that dependent on you believing the main character is dead.
The reason black panther had a hard time fighting Killmonger is because he has equal fighting ability to black panther and they both had simple weapons
just watched the movie. my thoughts: pros: - GREAT set and costume design - good world building. wakanda feels like a real place, and this is helped a lot by the thoughtful production design - the music. i like how they used both traditional and modern music: african drums and chants as well as rap and hip hop - the performances in general - decent cinematography. some shots are nice but nothing stood out as particularly creative - t'challa and killmonger are well rounded and flawed characters with a really interesting dynamic cons: - some of the fight scenes are really hard to follow (especially the first two). they also use a lot of shaky cam, which is something i didn't expect considering how well shot combat was shot in 'captain america: the winter soldier', and how the director had experience when filming the boxing scenes in 'creed' - the cgi is generally terrible. the last fight looked like a video game cutscene - the story is standard, very lion king-esque. it's the classic hero story, so whilst there's nothing wrong with it, it doesn't bring anything new to the table in terms of story - the comedy doesn't work and offsets the tone at times - this isn't a fault of the director but rather marvel: there's no tension knowing that t'challa lives to the end of the movie. it harms the final battle between t'challa and killmonger overall i enjoyed it, and whilst it's not a perfect movie, i think it deserves the success it's getting.
I'd listen to Jordan talk about his kidney stones for ten minutes if it meant I got to sit in a fucking temperpedic movie seat, that shit sounds sweet.
Pros Very well motivated villain Creative production choices Like ralph says: "good on paper" Growth of the character and universe Acting was good. I liked Michael B Jordan. Cons Poorly executed villain No stakes I care about Didn't get invested in the characters Humor was uneven Villain had strange motivation and actions at the very end of his character arc.
I really did like Black Panther. I loved the culture. I loved the characters. I wish they'd spent more time on Killmonger motivations because although I understood it, I wanted to also understand exactly what he thought and believed. I liked that after the movie I could understand that the main conflict wasn't the struggle between Killmonger and T'challa, but how he as a king was going to change the relationship between Wakanda and the outside world. I thought it was interesting as fuck, and something I'll think about for a long time. Good review though, you brought up alot of good points I hadn't noticed.
Agreed. I also feel like being African-American helps audiences relate to the characters. So while it would've been nice from a general viewing persepective, for myself and those I saw it with, we could see ourselves in both Black Panther and Killmonger, so we didn't need their sides of the conflict so throroughly explained (also why I think he kind of missed what I personally saw in the political commentary past "dont kill white people"). He also complained that it felt cliche, but it felt like a very new take on a civil-war story to me becuase it involved a culture and concept I'd hardly ever seen in theaters. However, the crituques offered are fair, and they really could have explained why Killmonger went with muderer instead of anything else (someone deemed insane for beliveing in this "imaginary" place, or someone who just wants revenge on Black Panther and no one else, ect.) Agree to disagree Ralph, but I get your points!
Also, I think people kind of gloss over how Nakia had the same feelings as Killmonger, in that Wakanda was neglecting the people it should be helping, but wanted to do it through nondestructive means. Killmonger is a pretty cool and complex antihero, and I think this was definitely something Marvel needed
Everyone seems to have missed the subtle point the writers were making. "Bury me in the ocean with my ancestors that jumped from the ships," says Killmonger. But Killmonger's ancestors were ALL Wakandans. He is literally the first one of his lineage to ever be born outside of Wakanda. His actual ancestors are privileged, rich, powerful people who have never experienced any kind of oppression, ever! He is bitter and angry and blames everyone else for his problems to such an extent that he develops a victim mentality based purely on his ethnicity. I am black therefore I am oppressed. Except he wasn't. He descends from the most comfortable society on the planet and has NO CONNECTION to the men that jumped from the ships, AT ALL. That they happen to have the same pigmentation is meaningless. We are not accountable for the actions (good or bad) of those who happen to look like us. Geddit?
I believe Killmonger was talking about his mother´s ancestors there, since her mother was probably African American and only is father is Wakandan. I don´t think it´s about playing a victim at all I think Killmonger has this duality, this dilemma, where his paternal ancestors were high ranks of the world´s most advanced society while her maternal ones were slaves living in horrible conditions who stemmed from that same civilization, even if remotely so. He doesn´t understand why Wakanda allowed that to happen, and he can´t really get over the fact that half of his lineage took a part on that deliberate neglecting while the other suffered the consequences of it. He´s supposed to be this synthesis of both pasts that will bring a new tomorrow, but his hatred ends up being his demise. If he didn´t held so much hatred for both Wakandans and white people and actually wanted all this race hatred to end, he could´ve been as good of a king as T´Challa, and would have probably done charity projects and basically be the defender of Africa like T´Challa did at the end of the movie
Or, maybe it was because he spent his life growing up in the projects in America alongside other African-American kids, and so considers their struggles his own, to the point where, when he finds out his real ancestors did nothing to stop history from happening when they could have, he decides to abandon his own lineage, and considers those brought over to America his real ancestors? At least, that's how I think we were meant to take it, but I kinda agree with you that, given the context, it does kinda just come off like he was bitter about not being born privileged in Wakanda like the rest of the Wakandans and blames everyone else.
@@bobjones2959 Either way its just not that revolutionary of a commentary. It falls flat just like how the young college students talk of privilege while at the same time taking advantage of their privilege, college. It further falls flat when they read off his list of accomplishments, studied at MIT, became a navy seal presumably as an officer, etc. This dude has had some major opportunities. The thing that really bugged me about the movie and the supposed political commentary, is that his character was driven first and foremost by his own personal vendetta. Did he care about the plight of the African Americans when he shot his girlfriend in the head? it falls flat and distracts from the movie hard. I honestly don't understand how people walked away from this movie, "woke."
Sometimes I wish I could like Ralph's video's more than once. He has to be the most sane movie reviewer I've ever seen and I trust his recommendations on every movie without bias. He makes Chris and Jeremy the Marvel of movie reviewers.
It's fine. I'll still watch all 4 of them (YMS included.) I don't like just 1 person, I agree and disagree with all 4 of them. Imo Ralph blurs the lines of cliche and trope too much, but at least he doesn't confuse what the two are like I've seen others do.
Lolol at my Jordans furniture there is this HUGE indoor rope climbing course and u get to fly across the room attached to this vest thing it’s weird asf
I agree that the movie is bland but good, and I think personally it suffers from bad creative control and not letting the director do his job similar to Ant Man. I hope they fix these problems in the sequel and the rest of the MCU.
@@c.thepeace3849 Yea, cause T'Challa dad killed his dad, so he can just kill anyone cause his dad died. What a great villain..... Plus, that fight scene insults PS2.
I agree. Turkish airlines would have made me feel like these things are really happening. They represent a certain quality that I think we should go for it.
The main problem with marvel is they hardly ever give directors freedom to make THEIR movies. It's always their way and that's a damn shame because it ended up turning away an amazing chance at a phenomenal marvel film by Edgar Wright
We all have to understand that super hero movies will never be that good. They’re made to entertain kids. They won’t ever have great writing, choreographed action or great cg. They will always only be dumb action movies.
Gerald Green Didn't he just talk about Dark Knight being a masterpiece in this very video? And yeah as long as Disney sees it that way that's all marvel movies ever will be but that doesn't mean they don't have more potential, just look at the comics. A lot of people might say they're stupid and for children but the stories and writing a lot of the times is better and more adult than people think, prime example of that being Watchmen and my personal favorite story God Loves Man Kills
