🎬 In this FilmSpeak video essay we discuss why Black Panther Wakanda Forever is BROKEN, but Beautiful.
🔔 SUBSCRIBE: ru-vid.com?sub_con...
The MCU has had a sort of pallor cast over it for two years now, ever since the world lost Chadwick Boseman. Director Ryan Coogler has grieved and mourned not only someone he had a critical working relationship with, but an incredibly dear friend. On top of that, before Chadwick's passing, Coogler had finished a script for his follow-up to the iconic behemoth that is Black Panther. So not only was he forced to grieve, but in choosing to go back to work on the sequel, he placed an impossible, entirely unenviable task upon himself: to make a Black Panther film absent of HIS Black Panther.
What we got as a result of this is Black Panther 2, and the fact that it manages to mostly work is almost a triumph, and if its main objective was to pay tribute to Chadwick Boseman, then in that respect the film succeeds in a massive way. It's been out for a few days now, and the reality is that it's going to take time to really come to terms with everything it has going on. It's not just a long, epic film, it's also a film that has a LOT to say about grief, and a lot of it is deeply profound, remorseful, and even cathartic.
But…and this is a big "but"...not everything here works. Despite Ryan Coogler’s passion, despite how this stands tall as one of the most clearly director-driven MCU films…it is still an MCU film nonetheless. And so, you’ve got tie-ins to other MCU properties that distract from the core of the film, you’ve got some tonal inconsistency, and you’ve also got character and story decisions that feel unmotivated beyond propelling the plot along and instigating the almost compulsory final battle. And when I first saw the film, those things really grated on me. But I’ve had about a week to think on it, and while the film’s issues are still, well…issues…I think I see some of the intent behind those decisions a little more clearly. So while Wakanda Forever is a mess, it's a beautiful mess and I can't quite say I'm in the Wakanda Forever is bad camp despite all the issues I have with it. Griffin (@griffschiller) gives you his Black Panther: Wakanda Forever review or Black Panther Wakanda Forever video essay and explains why black panther wakanda forever is almost great, Black Panther Wakanda Forever is a Beautiful Mess, why Black Panther Wakanda Forever is Broken, and The Problem with Black Panther Wakanda Forever. 1) Ramonda’s death actually has a point beyond giving Shuri a reason to kill Namor. After T’Challa’s death, Ramonda encourages Shuri to continue researching how to create the heart shaped herb so that there can be another Black Panther. But Shuri dismisses the idea, arguing that the Black Panther is a relic of the past. And what happens? Wakanda is attacked and her mother is killed. What if Shuri had listened to her mother and developed the heart shaped herb? There might’ve been a Black Panther to protect Wakanda and fight off Namor, in which case her mother would’ve lived. That’s why Shuri hoped to see her mother in the ancestral plain. To seek forgiveness. But instead, she sees Killmonger. He isn’t there just to serve as a mirror of what she could become. He’s there to represent what she’s feeling in that moment, which is rage. But it’s mainly rage at herself. She’s angry at herself for not being able to save her brother. She’s angry for not listening to her mother who turned out to be right. 2) The inclusion of Ironheart is clearly a setup for her TV show. But she still serves an important function in Shuri’s character arc. In the first movie, Shuri is the kid sister while T’Challa is the wiser older sibling. In this movie, Riri is the kid sister while Shuri is the wiser older sibling. By having her act more like T’Challa, the movie is laying the groundwork for her to take on T’Challa’s other role, that of the Black Panther.
@huesoftheheart139

100% agree with point 1, but I disagree with point 2, because based on Riri Williams inclusion it didn’t suggest that was her intent because their relationship wasn’t really thawn out, I still think Riri Williams distracted from some of the movie instead of raised its level.
@amorfatikhb
@amorfatikhb Год назад
@@huesoftheheart139 Riri's involvement with the invention to find vibranium was important to the plot and upped the conflict point, but then they just didn't do much with her character. She clearly has a life and personality, but she wasn't a dynamic character to the film itself.
@dragonstormx

@@amorfatikhb Riri was certainly better than the Flash (I felt he was annoying) and Aquaman (thankfully his movie salvaged him) in the theatrical cut of Justice League and the members of the Justice Society in Black Adam who just existed to get into fights with the title character. This might be a hot topic, but I do feel she had a better first outing than Hawkeye did in Phase 1 since he didn't get that fleshed out until Phase 2. But she didn't make as good a first impression as Spider-Man and Black Panther himself did in Civil War. She was at least fun, and I am willing to give her show a chance, but she didn't quite have enough room to shine.

@@tmac731I don’t think it was a good comparison though. T’challa had the entire movie to go through his revenge arc but the death of the Queen happened 2/3 in of the movie, it was a complete switch of the already lack luster plot of Shuri’s grief and Nahmor’s overly simplistic and lazy desire for him to conquer the surface world.

@famousthaneus9810
@famousthaneus9810 Год назад
Just gonna make two brief counterpoints: 1) Ramonda could've been placed into a coma or on life-support and Shuri could've still embraced her rage 2) Shuri still didn't embrace her rage after Ramonda died.
@Veryy_Victoriaa
@Veryy_Victoriaa Год назад
@@famousthaneus9810 I can agree with your first point but as to your second, she did. It was like she was blinded by it (for example when Griot told her the ship could explode any minute, she was more concerned with hurting Namor than seeing that setting off her explosives inside the ship was not a good idea). When she spoke with M’Baku about her heart, she told him she just buried it with the last person who really knew her. And when he later spoke with her as the Black Panther, she yelled at him about her mother’s hopes and dreams being gone, how Namor killed her mother right in front of her, and for him to stop talking as if she were still alive. He was the voice of reason, him and Nakia, but she wasn’t hearing it. I feel like had Ramonda not died, I’m not sure who would’ve visited Shuri in the ancestral plane. The fact that Killmonger did just solidifies how full of rage she was, including the fire lighting up the throne room as she spoke to him. Even her theme music was dark.
@famousthaneus9810
@famousthaneus9810 Год назад
@@Veryy_Victoriaa I figured you'd raise those examples, but that's all just her being angry. Her embracing her anger would've been killing Namor, or at the very least beating him to within an inch of his life (she only weakened him). If she'd embraced her rage, it would've taken more than just a spirit vision of Ramonda to get her to spare Namor's life, it would've also taken someone like Nakia being there to physically try to get her to come to her senses. As it stands, she was just angry, through the whole movie she was angry, and Ramonda's death did nothing to enhance that. Completely unnecessary death
@Veryy_Victoriaa
@Veryy_Victoriaa Год назад
@@famousthaneus9810 what remains is what M’Baku said was true; Namor was a god to his people. Killing him would mean the fight would never stop. It took a spear to the gut and the vision of her mother to finally make *her* stop. I’m glad Namor didn’t die. He had some wild ideas but he’s one of the best antagonists the MCU has had along with Thanos, Killmonger, and the early version of Loki before the writers made him more likable since he was a fan fave. The god killer in Thor Love and Thunder could have been another one but his arc was poorly written. Anyway Shuri buried her whole family. I still believe something in her finally snapped after her mother. Her Panther suit was even like Killmonger’s, which should make it clearer without words how vengeful she’s become. It was the whole reason she chose to try the herb, not because she truly believed the spiritual aspect of it (as shown by the water earlier in the film).
@ghost245353
@ghost245353 Год назад
@@Veryy_Victoriaa Exactly. In addition, she didn't care about having eternal war with Talocan. To Shuri, it didn't matter how many of her people, or anyone's people, died as long as *she* killed Namor. M'Baku said that going to war would be worth it, but questions Shuri if Ramonda would have wanted eternal war. Shuri clearly deflected the question by stating M'Baku could not know what someone who was not his mother could have wanted. It's why I wasn't rooting for her in the final battle. Perhaps @Tamous Thaneus has a definition of rage we are not realizing.

Riri and Tony don't need some super deep connection for that bit of her inclusion to work imo. Both are geniuses, both went to MIT, both clearly have family struggles and have some unfinished baggage with their fathers albeit Starks is more so feeling unloved whilst Riri's is missing the man that put her on this path of engineering. Both see the harm their actions have caused from their genius be it intentional or otherwise unintentional. Riri dawning an iron suit does feel compressed but she also didnt have to make a mk. 2 suit in a cave with a box of scraps. We already saw her mk.1 in her garage that's reminiscent of that. Coming to Wakanda to make the mk.2 suit legit sped up the process since their tech is centuries ahead of the rest of the world's so by the time we get her in suit we get a vision of what she can be now that she's fought for a cause greater than herself, doing right by people that have treated her compassionately and saved her life. My one issue is the tonal disconnect of her just happily killing Talochans in the final battle, but aside from that gripe her inclusion was very natural and enjoyable and I'm actually looking forward to what her show will cover after this crucible. Only inclusions in this movie I genuinely don't like in this film is Valentina, she serves no point and there's hardly any Thundebolts setup so her inclusion just feels like mandated bs. One token white character was enough in Ross since he has a stake in the plot somewhat.

I saw this in theaters and withheld judgement until seeing on TV at home. Then, I watched it again. Then again. And to make sure I was being fair, I watched it again. There's no easy way to say it but to all the people who found something wrong with the story line, go watch it again because you probably missed something that made what you misunderstood make sense. I found that damn near 98% of every plot point was on target with moving the story forward, and the use of callbacks to further this story also worked. This movie honestly was probably the best story told in the MCU yet and what I mean was there wasn't very many if any, scenes that did not fit perfectly into the overarching story. Even the foreshadows into future characters and stories was thorough and rounded out. In my opinion, the story on screen was perfectly told and delivered in perfect time through the main characters and while a few of the secondary characters left a bit too much off the table, it was done deliberately in order to prepare the their own IPs being given the greenlight. The forthcoming Wakanda Dis+ should pick up with the sub plots that people wined about not fitting or making sense. Damn it people just give the cast and crew their roses because this film stood up when everyone had doubt in some way. We dont need connections from Riri to Tony yet, her story is just being introduced. Nothing has taken place to warrant the criticism this guy makes just for the simple fact it is the first time we are introduced to her. The comic books somehow make people feel like they are know whats to come and its not true. This is the MCU and they have made huge changes to storylines to fit the screen...INFINITY WAR!!! Not one Xmen character or better yet, not one other superhero outside of the MCU who actually fought in the comics was in the film and for those who dont know or remember, it was damn near every Marvel Comic superhero on Earth fighting Thanos in the comics. The movie had 19 or 20 superheros featured. Relax and stop hating and begin appreciating. Man I'm drunk and high as fuck lol and if you read this bullshit to this point, I want some of what you been smoking because it must be some dank.

Ye I completely agree, a lot of this film seemed like it was underdeveloped because it had to compensate for the lack of T’Challa. And even though Riri was very much unnecessary for this film(and literally isn’t necessary for the main conflict and drive of Namor’s fury in the end) I love how they didn’t pull an America Chavez and ruin a powerful movie by having an uninteresting and annoying character steal the films major conflict from the title character without justification or foresight. Also Namor stole the show for me, he was awesome and probably the most entertaining part of it, even with the emotional powerhousing of Shuri’s emotional evolution. Also love how they didn’t force feed representation to us with the first major(and watchable) Hispanic Superhuman in the MCU, it was creative, unique, moving, and organic and genuinely made me conflicted as to who I was rooting for till the invasion of wakanda.

I believe Wakanda Forever has better action, cgi, score/music, better timed jokes, and an overall better tone. Shuri’s character was also vastly improved in this movie. My biggest problems were namors goals and riri. You could take riri out, rewrite one scene and the movie would be the same. Did not care about her character and her weird Gundam suit at all. For namor, I think they were so close to having great motivations for him. After his first encounter with shuri and Ramonda, his plot doesn't really make sense. He captures riri and shuri and has a chance to kill riri and just doesn't because.....the plot needs him not to. And then he ambushes wakanda on their own turf and completely has the upper hand. Kills Ramonda and his hovering mere feet from riri while the entire city is in disarray and could've once again killed her but instead says he'll be back in a week because? The plot needs him to. I think the motivation of him wanting wakanda to join him to take on the world is a way more interesting plot line but they don't set up with that. Instead they set up with the riri stuff but then kind of switch halfway but not really. It was just very messy and nonsensical.

Genuinely the best phase 4 has been for me (I love No Way Home and Spider-Man is my favorite superhero, but there are narrative issues that keep it from the top spot imo). This one has issues as well for sure, but Letitia Wright delivers a fantastic performance along with the legendary Angela Bassett. The film connects for me in a big way that I simply did not think it could because of the overall quality of phase 4 since NWH and the Herculean task of writing past the death of Chadwick. This gives me hope that Marvel will soon pull the reigns back a little and allow their directors and writers to focus on telling good stories about complex characters and delivering their messages with NUANCE. Something I personally feel the MCU has been missing heavily, especially in the last 2 years.

HUGELY missed opportunities for a story unique to Shuri in this one. What we got wasn't awful, in fact it was good and Letitia crushed it. In the comics T'Challa and Shuri aren't that different from one another anyways until Shuri comes back from the dead. A transformation from the comics I think they missed the opportunity to loosely adapt. Instead of a story where Shuri overcomes revenge I would have had a story where Shuri's grief and prolonged mourning over her brother results in heightened insecurities and doubt over her place in Wakanda as a clear non-traditionalist. Over the course of the movie she'd have to deal with the pressures of dealing with the blip fallout (largely Ramonda's role but with Shuri trying and failing to help) and the pressure people are putting on her to create a synthetic herb garden... which she struggles to figure out and questions her skills following her failure to save T'Challa. It would be a story about mourning and restoring faith after grappling with faithlessness. The people of Wakanda would play a larger role (doubting their rulers like in the comics), Namor and Talokan would play a slightly smaller one (but not too small).. and I would have introduced the character of Bast instead of Riri Williams. Marvel already cast her actress and apparently she was in Thor Love & Thunder. She would act as a spiritual guide for Shuri after first appearing disguised as an average patient in the hospital where Shuri is studying the disease that killed T'Challa... then towards the end of the 2nd act she reveals herself as Bast. She would point Shuri to a place she can find the underwater plant to synthesise the herb and after this disappear completely leaving Shuri to wonder if she was real or just a mental construct since Shuri is very clearly agnostic. Namor still wants the same thing and would have earlier raided Wakanda and injured Ramonda severely after she risked her life to safe some trapped citizens. Shuri ends the movie by setting a trap for Namor, challenging his authority in front of his people and then beating him up forcing a truce as the new Black Panther. Movie ends the same way or with another UN scene attended by Ross and Val.

I loved this film, kinda not a fan of the overall theater going experience/watching it in the theater bc it felt like going to a funeral but THAT was why I went so whatever. But the one thing I disagreed with in your video is a minute detail, but still one i think deserves mention. In regards to your statement of RiRi Williams having no tie to Tony Stark, I have a "theory" that might explain why I disagreed with that sentiment. So in "Civil War" Tony is introduced giving a presentation to MIT students, and announcing a grant program for their work and ongoing studies (The September Foundation, I believe it was called.) Then we see RiRi attending MIT and working on an Iron Man esque suit. Watching that scene, I inferred that maybe the grant program was ongoing beyond that one time we heard about it, and all the imagery between the two is meant to show that he inspired a new generation of thinkers and heroes as well as just tying back into the comics where she found an old suit and repaired it for her own use. Hope that helps anyone who is also bewildered by that imagery parallel.

I did not see the story showing Talokan utilizing divide and conquer on the US and Wakanda at all. Yes, there’s this subplot of the US assuming the Wakandas are responsible for the Talokan attack (an interesting point that does feel underdeveloped), but I don’t feel this is done to empahasize Talokan forcing the Wakandans to choose between an alliance with one or the other as the central conflict. In actuality, I see this showing the US’s imperialist nature leading them on an all too familiar journey of searching for resources in foreign lands to exploit for their benefit. In doing so, not only are they exploiting Wakanda’s generosity and humanity of wanting to find ways to share their resources with the world, they are threatening to force Talokan to be forced into that exact same predicament. Civilizations thriving after/never being touched by colonization now more than ever feel the pressure of an imperialist threat. Therefore, the US/imperial countries’ eager search for Vibranium pits the two strongest nations against each other, aka dividing and conquering them, with the imperialists actually being the shared enemy the two powerful nations should be uniting against. The cliffhanger that looms by the battle’s end since the two nations do seem to have some sort of lasting agreement as the threat of exploitation is still at large.

I mean all they have to do is just grab a ton of them and it would save them a lot of trouble. Plus even then before the events of the first Black Panther, why couldn't they just make a Black Panther army with a select individuals, so that way if someone can't be Black Panther anymore like T'challa or Shuri if she needs a vacation can take over? Then in that way, they have someone to take over when the next villain comes to Wakanda and if Shuri is taking a break or dealing with something more Avengers level. My only real issues with the movie was the forced MCU product placement. Take out RiRi and the Americans subplot and it would've been a 10/10 for me

This was an extremely emotional film. I thought it was well done but it had problems the most outstanding being the loss of Queen Ramonda. It was hurtful and unnecessary. Shuri could have become the new Black Panther with her mother still being alive. I can overlook Ross’, Val’s and Riri Williams’ plot lines but Queen Ramonda’s death should never have been part of the storyline. Thank you for this video.

@@sopek1427 People do die in wars but Queen Ramonda didn’t have to be one of the casualties. That was a choice that I don’t agree with. It won’t change what is now canon but I’m definitely going to miss having Queen Ramonda’s beauty, elegance, intellect and power in the MCU.

I think they did it to make the cameo a surprise. Shuri goes to the ancestral plane, the people she would most likely see is her brother (can’t do that), her father(who she wasn’t really close with) or killmonger. It would’ve been obvious who she’d see if her mom didn’t die. Plus that drove her revenge arc. She wouldn’t have wanted revenge if Namur didn’t take something precious from her.
@elizabethshannon5477
@elizabethshannon5477 Год назад
@@alishak9178 I have to respectfully disagree. Shuri was already angered over the death of her brother who, despite her incredible intellect, she couldn’t save. Wakanda was under attack, her people suffering and dying. Shuri had the motive as it was a betrayal by Namor. That her mother’s life was endangered would have been enough to enrage Shuri even further, imo. But it didn’t play out that way unfortunately so we’ll see how Shuri , the rest of the Wakanda people and the world deal with the new Black Panther. Thank you for your reply.
@alishak9178
@alishak9178 Год назад
@@elizabethshannon5477 good point. Maybe she could’ve been gravely hurt instead of killed. That could’ve been enough to enrage Shuri to want revenge. I guess I was talking more about who would visit her in the ancestral plane. This was so people would assume her mother was gonna be there maybe? Idk I guess neither of us knows what Ryan had in his mind. Just speculation.

America Chavez wasn't a MacGuffin. She and her abilities were directly plot relevant. You couldn't have slotted another Marvel character in for her. You couldn't have replaced her with the Maltese Falcon. Riri, on the other hand, could have been almost any genius because being Iron Heart wasn't relevant to the plot. She could have been Lunella Lafayette or even some unnamed genius. She was functionally a MacGuffin.
@famousthaneus9810

MacGuffins can also be directly plot relevant, hell they often are. Chavez was a MacGuffin, and the Book of Vishanti was a MacGuffin. Both directly plot related. Edit: A MacGuffin means "an object or device in a movie or a book that serves merely as a trigger for the plot," so yea, directly plot related
@dr.kekyll2244

@@famousthaneus9810 "Merely" being the operative word. America Chavez wasn't *merely* a trigger for the plot. She was an active participant (which is what I was thinking when I said "directly relevant" but admittedly that's unclear). The Book of Vishanti was absolutely a MacGuffin (and I'd argue not actually plot relevant as it never actually mattered what it did exactly), but America was not.

Not a mess. Just GARBAGE! A mustached, souled and goateed Namor. He lives underwater!! So what purpose did his facial hair serve other than to give us a character, that aside from his winged feet and trunks, WAS NOT NAMOR???? Despite being a major MC character he kills another major character, Romonda, thereby guaranteeing his demise! But he doesn’t die! Now what kind of SHIT is that???? And how is it no one saw that as any sort of problem, in total disregard of it making the film’s plotting GARBAGE! And GARBAGE was what it was!!!
