The cool thing about this guy ranking the Black Sabbath albums is that he, unlike some of the older reviewers, is free from the "I was there when it was released" bias
I agree. There is a reason why the early catalog are iconic and it is not because “everybody was there”. That is no disrespect to Bryce either but it was a surprising ranking
@@swampcrypt I think our definition of heavy metal may differ. To me what Toni Iommi and his hired guns did in the 80s/90s is no better than any overproduced commercial made-for-airplay hard rock (glam/hair/FM metal) of the era. (If you read his autobiography, it is clear he did not put as much love in what he produced in those days than coke in his nostrils.) It his not worse than what others did at the time, but it has no special flavor or personality. You could mistake it for Dokken or any other in that category. I think e.g. Ozzy did far better as to retain some personality in what seems to me a very bland era. Many many bands, but all doing the same power ballads with too much reverb. I lived through this and did not like it. I seem to notice that younger people (not even born at the time) like this style and period. There surely is an explanation. And it is good, each one gets his own. But hearing Glenn Hughes (and clones) clean vocals and echo-drowned drums still make my skin crawl. It would sure take me a lot to listen carefuly to all that 😉
I struggle between the Tony Martin era and the Dio albums. I think overall, I like more songs from the Martin era, but I'm just so partial to Dio. Both eras have great songs and I think they actually have a lot in common in terms of their sound, much more so than the Ozzy eras. I don't really like the Headless Crosses album but everything else from Martin is pure gold.
@@kforcer I actually like Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules more than any Tony Martin era album, but I just think that The Martin period offers a diversely collection of albums that are all unique and different from one another. Honestly, I love all three eras pretty much equally though.
i love all eras of Sabbath love to see someone giving the Tony Martin era its due those albums are so underrated as well as Born Again. We all love certain albums and would have different rankings and thats the cool part of these ranking videos and makes them interesting.great video
Good to see the Tony Martín era getting some love. That era is highly underrated. My top 5 albums are the following: 1) Born again 2) Headless cross 3) Mob rules 4) Heaven and Hell 5) Technical ecstasy
So glad The Eternal Idol got in your top 3. Love that album. Underrated as hell. Great to see heaven and hell ranking as your favorite, amazing album too. Solid ranking.
Woah. How refreshing to see a ranking list to see a lot of non ozzy albums high on the list. I love the Ozzy stuff, but like you said, there was good and great stuff from every era. I’m looking forward to getting into your channel.
This is a really fascinating ranking! younger people tend to be more objective without the bias towards the massive albums (70s) or against the ones that disappeared without a trace (90s) I mostly listen to Tony Martin era these day!!
Master of Reality 15??????? That album is the heaviest, relentless, repentless, mean, creepy------basically influenced those later to play death metal. I was scared of it as a kid, meaning, in the 70s. The riffs are nearly dead and intentionally without emotion. It is pure doom, and made the other rock and roll bands at the time seem like tap dancers. Aside from War pigs and Paranoid (way overplayed), in the 80s and 90s, hardcore, thrash and death metal band covers all came from Master.
I absolutely didn’t expect this ranking, and while I don’t fully agree with it, as I love the old Ozzy albums, I respect and appreciate the love shown to the underrated Tony Martin albums, as well as Born Again and Seventh Star, two albums which are often unfairly panned but that I really like a lot. Solid video as always!
Yo, while I think some of your rankings seem kinda crazy, I fully appreciate that you stand by your opinion. I just like that we all can have different thoughts on stuff.
Love the channel dude , happy to see a young metalhead(like me , although 29 might not be so young anymore :p ) talking about this. I also like the Early Sabbath less then the other albums, i love the Dio and Tony Martin era. Strangly like Ozzy more on his own stuff then on the sabbath stuff. My number one is The Eternal Idol (followed by Heaven And Hell) Keep up the good work
Spot on. Master of Reality, vol 4, Paranoid and Black Sabbath not in the top ten! They are top five. They say that everyone is entitled to their opinion but this is laughable.
Awesome to see someone who has the balls to have a unique ranking! Don't listen to the haters that disliked the video, they just wanted to hear their opinion coming out of your mouth.
Two of my favorite pastimes are listening to Black Sabbath, watching RU-vid videos ranking their albums. Definitely a different list than mine, and different than usual, but you're obviously a true fan. I am glad to see Never Say Die and Technical Ecstasy at the back of the pack. It seems to have become trendy to love those albums, and while they both have a couple good tracks, there is far greater Sabbath material out there. This is the second video I have seen lately that ranks Heaven and Hell as number one. I am bigger on a few of the earlier albums, but I'm all in on Heaven and Hell, Mob Rules, Dehumanizer, and Born Again. I will have to revisit a few of the others with the exception of Forbidden.
Love your ranking!!! I also prefer the 80's version of the band, through the 90's, just in a slightly different order. Not to diminish the original lineup, just vocal and production vise, I think the later stuff is better. Heaven and Hell, The Eternal Idol and Headless Cross are my personal favorite.
you got the bottom rankings right, was a bit surprised that master of reality came in so low though. it is true that the ozzy albums werent as good as dio and martin era, i think that sabotage and sabbath bloody sabbath would be their best ozzy ones which you got right there. Dehumanizer was a great album, personally i think tony martin stuff is their best and eternal idol i think is the perfect album with all the songs absolute gold. I would have very similar ranking to yours.
Late to the party, as usual, but I really enjoyed this ranking. It's neat to see someone whose tastes are a bit different from the norm; I have a different order that also includes The Devil You Know, and I feel like I could sit and talk shop with Bryce about where we agree and where we disagree. I think that would be a thoroughly enjoyable conversation. Fork horns, brother! 🤘🤘🤘
WHOA!!! We will never agree on this list haha! Still very interesting to compare. I was especially surprise to see 13 lower than Never Say Die. I absolutely love 13
Wow. Great list. I can totally empathize with this list. I guess Heaven and Hell would be my number one as well, but Tyr is just amazing as well as Eternal Idol.
About time the Martin era gets the love it deserves! Such an important and seminal part in the band's history, yet all these so called "fans" always dismiss it. Eternal Idol is my personal favorite, it used to be Headless Cross and/or Heaven and Hell but it grew on me immensely over the past couple of years and it's a must listen for me.
Can't say I agree with this list, but as you say, it's all a matter of opinion. This is the first video I saw of your channel. I just think it's awesome that the younger generation give good old Sabbath some love. Respect.
I don't agree with the list as well but it's nice to see how Black Sabbath brought different perspectives to all of us with so many albums and eras, one of my favourite bands of all time.
Glad to watch someone that is honest! I Rest seem to rank the albums just depending on the singer. It is suspicious that everyone have to love the same albums of these people. BTW, Tyr is awsome!!! Tony Martin is a great singer!
Your ranking is very similar to mine, with most Ozzy albums being at the bottom half of the list and having the Dio and Martin albums at the top. Cool that you named dropped Sea of Tranquility. One of the better music review channels on RU-vid in my opinion.
At #15 the "slaughtering" begins and I was just chuckling here, hahah! Nobody tears down iconic albums the way you do, Bryce no fuss, just putting them in their place with utter cool 😁 Well, I love Master Of Reality myself and quite like Vol 4. as well but Paranoid does nothing for me apart from the title track and yeah, the debut is more interesting for it's historic significance than a very enjoyable record to listen to. Also, the fact that Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage were elevated from the rest of the Ozzy records was neat, love those two, SBS is probably my favorite Sabbath album along with Mob Rules 👍
I can’t agree with at all but I loved how you gave everything a chance for a young person I never gave those tony Martin stuff a chance hopefully that box set comes out
What stands out the most to me about the Tony Martin era esp with The Eternal Idol and TYR is the songwriting and lyrics. The instrumentals to the songs in this era is far from my favourite but those elements are the best thing about that era IMO, some real deep and meaningful songs. I just watched this but still haven’t heard every Sabbath era, but my favourite is the Dio era at this point.
Old Guy here! I tend to ignore many of these "rankings" videos because they are so subjective, but clicked on this one for some reason. I am interested to know at what point you entered the Sabbath discography, because this is an unusual ranking. My first Sabbath song was 'Paranoid' but my first purchased album was Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, followed by the album Paranoid, then I gradually filled in the Ozzy Era as I lived through it in the 70s. Despite Ozzy being my first Sabbath singer and my love of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage, I am drawn to the Martin era, particularly Eternal Idol and Tyr. I was shocked to see you ranking those albums at #3 and #2 - never seen that before. They usually get short shrift from the Sabbath Fundamentalists. I like your list. I can get behind Heaven & Hell being the no.1 album, although if I had to pick only one album to listen to on a desert island I would pick Sabbath Bloody Sabbath over it. Still, the song 'Heaven & Hell' is in my top ten Sabbath songs. I agree that '13' is the worst - don't want to even talk about that album. There is so much to discuss about Sabbath, but I won't go into all of it except to say that as an older Sabbath fan, Eternal Idol really stuck with me for some reason from the first listen. Awesome album - totally underrated...like the singer, Tony Martin, who does not get enough respect.
You should do a ranking of some of the early 70's obscure proto metal groups such as, Christopher, Leaf Hound, Bang, Dust, Lucifers Friend, Zior, Sir Lord Baltimore, Variations, May Blitz, The Third Power, Sex, Captain Beyond, Jericho, Buffalo, Tin House, Thunder And Rose's, Granicus, Message, Gift...and on and on. THESE are just a few bands that were overshadowed by Black Sabbath but were extremely crucial and influential to most of the metal acts that came after. These bands put out some amazing records...if people only knew.
Some of your rankings may be viewed as weird by some (including me). But I surely respect your passion. Gotta say that putting Master Of Reality near the end (my fave from them) with Paranoid in the middle of the pack, behind some albums people would have thrown at the bottom, it's hurting, but also bold. Seems like you're more of a fan of Dio/Martin years, the more "epic" albums, than the more "doomy" ones with Ozzy.
demos for Eternal w/RAY Gillen lets us realize Tony told Tony M. to copy the exact vocal patterns and most lyrics, I guess time was an issue...I rate it high too, great list
It’s great that you gave the Dio and Martin era’s the credit they deserve. Here’s mine. The last 14 can change as often as I change my socks, but the top 5 has always been constant. 19 Forbidden 18 Cross Purposes 17 13 16 Never Say Die 15 Technical Ecstasy 14 Born Again 13 Sabotage 12 Paranoid 11 Seventh Star 10 The Eternal Idol 9 Headless Cross 8 Volume 4 7 Tyr 6 Black Sabbath 5 Dehumaniser 4 Mob Rules 3 Master of Reality 2 Sabbath Bloody Sabbath 1 Heaven and Hell
Finally someone showing respect for Tony Martin’s era. Although I don’t like some of his albums , can’t deny Headless Cross and Eternal Idol are great albums!
Good list dude...Oz era is important & influential but all the subsequent eras of vocalist have a more solid albums under the Sabbath banner. 😎Heaven & Hell is the definitive Sab album of all time. TYR deserves the love you put on the high ranking. Great list from the usual 🤗
Interesting list! Didn't expect to see the first six albums so low, but it is indeed refreshing to see a list like this. I love those albums, but I feel that people are a little too biased against the albums from Born Again to Forbidden. Headless Cross, thankfully, does seems to be gettting some recognition lately, but I don't understand why the same people rank TYR way lower, when it is fairly similar in sound to HC. In fact, something in your list where I totally agree is that TYR is actually the better album. Sure, the first three tracks on HC are amazing, but I feel it kind of loses steam until Nighwing, while TYR is just more solid and full of epic tracks. Also, might want to check the new remix of Forbidden, it really does make the album a lot better.
Sabbath is pretty tough to rank for me. I love the 70s (first 6) and the 80s era for different reasons. My bottom 5 is 19. Never Say Die 18. 13 17. Technical Ecstasy 16. Born Again 15. Forbidden After that it gets pretty hard, depends on my mood. I'd say overall I prefer the Tony Martin and Dio eras over everything else, but Seventh Star is also among my favorites.. Yeah, it's probably a good thing I don't have a youtube channel, I could never put together a list I'd be happy with 😂
Hi Bryce from Medellín-Colombia. As usual great review. Very close to my opinion because I always have consider Tony Martin is The best vocalist for Black Sabbath. 1 Heaven and Hell 2 Eternal Idol 3 TYR 4 The Mob rules The rest is ok for me.
Good job👍 , but I have a problem with Eternal Idol, Cross Purposes, and Dehumanizer being too high on this list ... I'm not a fan of Ozzy at all, but I think his legacy deserves a higher rating.✌
I agree with you about Master of Reality. I've never cared for it that much. However, Vol. 4 would be near the top of my list, along with Heaven and Hell, Mob Rules, and Paranoid.
@@Bricklinsv1970 I love Testament. Pantera is my favorite band. Seen Testament at least twice. Missed them recently with Slayer. What's your top 5 Testament albums??
Oddest Sabbath list I have seen but that's why I like watching this stuff. Variety is the spice of life. Good to see Dehumanizer and Tyr get some love. Very underrated. I see 13 was really low and usually is on most list's. Listen to the best buy exclusive with the extra 4 songs. They actually have more of a Dio era vibe.
Good list, my top 5 is 1 Mob rules 2 heaven and hell 3 headless cross 4 Cross purposes 5 eternal idol It's so annoying they are not reissuing Tony Martin era stuff. I remember reading it was to do with Sharon Osborne (and Id believe it)
Good list. I appreciate that you didn't just give into the classic albums & ranked them more on musicality. Born Again sounds like it was recorded on a potato BTW lol
You have great taste love all black Sabbath with or without Ozzy black Sabbath is awesome Tony ioomi true riff master 🤘🤘I love and respect your ranking son
Dude I thought you were trolling at first but then I saw that you were serious. I don’t even have an issue with placing Heaven and Hell at #1. Completely understandable but some of your other placements are wild. The original Ozzy stuff doesn’t crack the top ten? Sabotage ranked at #10? Wow.
Good Ranking n a tough one to do i thought alot about mine n made several changes im going from best to worst 1. Paranoid 2. Master of Reality 3. Heaven and Hell 4. Headless Cross 5. Volume 4 6. Black Sabbath 7. Mob Rules 8. Devil you Know (Heaven and Hell titled album) 9. Born Again 10. Sabotage 11. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath 12. Eternal Idol 13. Dehumanizer 14. Never Say Die 15. Seventh Star 16. 13 17. Tyr 18. Technical Exstasy 19. Cross Purposes 20. Forbidden Again a tough one and it might not be a popular list but we all have opinions 🤘🤘
