I dont mean to be off topic but does anybody know a tool to log back into an instagram account..? I was dumb lost the account password. I would appreciate any tips you can give me.
"Born Again" kind of revived the "we wanna do music that terrifies people" approach from when the band first started. It sounds a lot more like the first six Ozzy-albums than the preceding two Dio albums. And it's great.
"Born Again" is even more underrated than "Headless Cross". I've always enjoyed ian Gillian's vocals on the album, no matter how much people have said it is terrible and magazines said "avoid this". It is kinda scary stuff, the laughter at the beginning of "Disturbing The Priest" is still shocking me because it starts suddenly after "Stonehenge". The title song and "Trashed" are some of the finest Sabbath songs.
I actually recently gave "Never Say Die" another chance and it totally clicked for me. It's a very solid hard rock album, my favourite tracks are by far Johnny Blade, Juniors Eyes and the title track
I agree. The Eternal Idol is actually very good. For me, I would rate that one much higher. The riffing on this album is some of Tony Iommi's best. I think Tony's vocals are perfect for this album. Ozzy would not have sounded nearly as good on this particular album.
@@shaynewest8757 I love Born Again.....but if you listen to Gillan Scarabus title track on the opening verses will hear the exact vocal attack and inflection he used for Disturbing the Priest on the verses......
I’m one of the few who loves the Tony Martin era the most (except the Forbidden album), I just love the overall atmosphere of those great albums, the songs are dark and heavy and Tony’s voice is just so epic and fits so well with the amazing music...
Tony not only had some of the best albums the band ever made which is saying a lot considering it's fucking Sabbath but he's also on a purely technical level he has the biggest range and vocal prowess and this is the same band that had Dio a few years before him who is phenomenal
Brad Wilk performed on 13 so I wasn’t so bummed that Bill wasn’t on the album. I might be a bit biased though considering I’m just as big a fan of Rage Against The Machine as I am with Black Sabbath
That is awesome that you ranked "Born Again" so high! I absolutely love that album too. Killer album!!! I actually love the cover too. It is killer..I love all of the line ups too! The Ozzy years are my favorite, but I love all of the albums and eras.
Born Again is a great album. I love the tracks Zero the Hero (the bass line is brilliant), Trashed is very hard, Disturbing the Priest and much others, look like a Sabbath visceral, crude, amazing! I love Black Sabbath and I love Born Again!🤘
@@emmanuelrojas9359 I know, and I'm agreeing with that. just saying by comparison to their first 5 albums which tend to get more love, it's got some underrated songs.
Right on! For that reason I love Never Say Die! It is proggy and as a drummer I love prog. The song writing and melodies are also really good and memorable. Not so much with Tech.
These 2 are in my top 3 BS albums along with Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Never Say Die sounds more like an Ozzy solo album from like 1982 a few years ahead of it time. Air Dance is a killer track and most of NSD is very convenient and the songs have amazing hooks. Technical Ecstasy has amazing tracks on it also
Me too!! It's brutally heavy. Actually, Dehumanizer, Strange Highways and Angry Machines are Dio's 3 heaviest albums and he never sounded angrier than he did on those 3 and on their respective tours.
@@Danimal77 Dude, Strange Highways is one I'd never heard opinions about, then I saw that iTunes had it on sale for $5. I got it & was blown away not just by the heaviness but also how good it sounded.
I'm older 59 so for me I put Ozzy stuff always up front before the others because they are the originals. On Vinyl not CD. Sabatoge has always been underrated and i never understood why. It is just so original and dark like its forefathers. I'll never put Dio before Oz but I bought them too and was so into Neon Nights and OMG when I heard the opening riff from the title Track of Mob Rules I just cranked it to Max decibels just to merge with it. That was the track that identified me and helped get me kicked out of Hobart and William Smith College! I since transferred and completed but yes, it was Mob RULES! that did it! Great List Pete. Love your stuff. Waiting for Album Openers!
My personal top 5 : 1- Master Of Reality 2- Paranoid 3- Sabbath Bloody Sabbath 4- Sabotage 5- Black Sabbath Nothing against Dio, he's awesome and rejuvenated Sabbath at a key point in their career. Plus, with Rainbow and his solo albums, he kicked ass. To me, Sabbath will always be unbeatable with Ozzy.....
I like all of them, but here's my list: (my favorite song on the album) 19. Forbidden (Get a Grip) 18. Tyr (Jerusalem) 17. Seventh Star (Heart Like a Wheel) 16. Never Say Die (Johnny Blade) 15. The Eternal Idol (The Shining) 14. Born Again (Zero the Hero) 13. Cross Purposes (Evil Eye) 12. Technical Ecstasy (Backstreet Kids) 11. Dehumanizer (Computer God) 10. Headless Cross (Headless Cross) 9. Mob Rules (The Mob Rules) 8. 13 (God is Dead?) 7. Vol. 4 (Under the Sun) 6. Black Sabbath (N.I.B.) 5. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (Killing Yourself to Live) 4. Heaven and Hell (Heaven and Hell) 3. Paranoid (War Pigs) 2. Sabotage (Symptom of the Universe; my favorite Sabbath song) 1. Master of Reality (Children of the Grave)
I haven't really delved into a lot of their 80's stuff...so this is my ranking of what I've heard: 12. Born Again 11. Technical Ecstacy 10. Never Say Die 9. 13 8. The Mob Rules 7. Dehumanizer 6. Black Sabbath 5. Vol. 4 4. Heaven and Hell 3. Sabotage/Sabbath Bloody Sabbath 2. Paranoid 1. Master of Reality
At first I didn't always like your videos, but now realise we have a lot of the same music listening history - I really appreciate what you do. Keep it going, mate.
The Devil You Know had - Dio, Iommi, Geezer, and Appice. Seventh Star had - Hughes, Iommi, Spitz, Singer and Nicholls. Which one was more Sabbath? This was a very good video either way.
You forgot "The Devil You Know" It is a unofficial Sabbath album with Dio from 2009. Sure, they used the name "Heaven & Hell" but it even used Henry (their mascot) in the artwork and music video of Bible Black. And ofcourse the Mob Rules line up with Apice and while on tour as heaven & hell, they played their Dio era songs. So it is a Black Sabbath album
Sabbath was being inducted into the R&R hall of fame so was H&H to avoid confusion. Even the name The Devil You Know is a play on the issue. I fully consider it a Sabbath album.
No doubt! Sabotage Rocks! "Thrill Of It All" simple riff but great groove! Won't you help me Mr. Jesus, won't you tell me if you can? When you see this world we live in, do you still believe in Man?
Man, my top six could really go in any order depending on the day… so many killer albums from my all time favourite metal band! I have always favoured the Ozzy material, so those albums take a lot of the higher spots on my list. Here’s my ranking: 1. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (1973) 2. Paranoid (1970) - three of the songs are overplayed, sure, but side 2 and Planet Caravan are enough to make this one of my all time favourite albums. 3. Master Of Reality (1971) 4. Sabotage (1975) 5. Vol. 4 (1972) 6. Black Sabbath (1970) 7. Technical Ecstasy (1976) 8. Mob Rules (1981) 9. Heaven And Hell (1980) 10. 13 (2013) 11. Never Say Die! (1978) 12. Dehumanizer (1992) The rest I don’t listen to that often, but they all have some solid moments: 13. The Eternal Idol (1987) 14. Seventh Star (1986) 15. Headless Cross (1989) 16. Tyr (1990) 17. Cross Purposes (1994) 18. Born Again (1983) - sorry, I love Deep Purple, but I’ve always thought this album was a bit silly. 19. Forbidden (1995) - poor production, and I’m not a big fan of the songs themselves.
Personally speaking, I like Never Say Die more than Technical Ecstasy. However, I do agree with what your saying about both albums. PS. Born Again is great.
I was 15 when born again was released. When I heard trashed and zero the hero, I knew How much ballsier and heavier it was than what Ozzy was doing at the time. Sabbath rules .
My favs were the dio albums. They were perfect together. Sabbath added more musical substance to Dio's material and Dio added better lyrics and a vocalist who could actually sing into the sabbath band. Great combo.
@David Mason dio's lyrics had philosophical meaning rooted in an academic level of knowledge in mythology. Their deep. Idgaf about dark and moody. Igaf about saying something with substance.
I freaking love Seventh Star as well. It was my first sabbath record so the nostalgia is real even though I'm currently just 27. Great video man, greetings from Germany. \m/
My first Sabbath albums were Master of Reality and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, my twin brother and I got them for our 10th birthday we are 47 now and still love those albums and Sabbath dearly
I’m one of the diehards who LOVES “never say die.” It’s such an interesting, mature album that displays each member’s talents to the max. I also love the material. “a hard road” could be a beatles song from 67, and “air dance” is incredible....I can see a band like RENAISSANCE covering it. I find myself returning to the mid-to-late-70s albums (except for tech ecstasy - a real butterball) more than the others.
I bought Born Again when it came out. Melted all the hair bands of that time. To top it off Jimmy Page teamed up with Paul Rogers to form The Firm. More melted hair bands. LOL.
@@johnoberle9750 sorry...respectfully disagree....the Firm was atrocious....pathetically lame....just when we thought Zeppelin didn't continue because Plant couldn't sing anymore.....( as exemplified by his hideous no balls solo schtick ).....we find out that Page forgot how to play guitar....the Firm was not only pathetic and lame...but Page was a mere shadow of his former self....this is the guy who gave us Presence....??....the spell had been broken...for both Page and Plant....
@@larrynolletti4594 Plant's voice changed around 1973 due to vocal problems, but although he couldn't some of the silly notes he was still good. There are some good songs on the first Firm album especially but Page appears to bathe his guitar in effects in an attempt to cover up the shortcomings in his play, but it didn't work, and I don't think he's been able solo well since the early 70s. The rest of the band are great and Paul Rodgers has the most soulful voice in rock, and his voice has aged really well.
Cross Purposes is an Outstanding Album. The production on Cross Purposes and Headless Cross was Perfect. Where ever Mr. Iommi goes I like to follow. Great Job Pete.
I loved Born Again too. Great album. When I was younger I wanted to get that guitar sound. Don't forget Bev Bevan of ELO played drums for them at least on that tour. I think Heaven and Hell is their best overall album. Hearing their dark music and imagery with someone like Dio who could really sing to me took it to a level that was perfect. I think each member was at their peak.
You mentioned wearing your "Born Again" concert shirt to school on the Monday after the show. God, I used to love doing that. It was vain, but so much fun. You show up with your brand-new concert shirt on and people you barely knew would say: "You went to that show, you went, seriously?! Man, how was it?!" I'd then act cooler than I ever actually was and say: "Man, it was unreal. Page/Blackmore/Gibbons/Perry blew the roof off. It was beyond anything I've ever seen. Minds were blown to pieces."
Pete you shouldn't apologize all the time for your order on the C.Ds you enjoy Screw the haters. BTW I love Mob Rules "Falling Off The Edge Of The World" is my favorite Dio/ Sabbath song."Bible Black"#2. Didn't really get into Dehumanizer. I guess I'm more into Dio/Sabbath lol
@Jean-Maurice Bicard getting pissed over these small matters seems childish... especially when you think most of the audience is likely middle aged men😒
@@Mari000 even though I was pissed at the "rock n roll" hall of fame inductions! Yet that's all about politics, "social justice" and $$$ O.k now I'm ranting😆😆😆
I would have loved to hear Ray Gillen on more Black Sabbath material. That dude could sing! I still let my neighbors know I own both Badlands albums from time to time.
@@mikerutherford5472; Ian Gillan was/is the Deep Purple frontman who did 'Born Again' with Black Sabbath. Ray Gillen was an American singer who did a few tracks with Black Sabbath during the 'Eternal Idol' sessions and those tracks weren't used on the original release, although you can find them on the 2010 reissue. Ray Gillen went on to form a band with Jake E Lee, Eric Singer, and Greg Chaisson called 'Badlands', who released two albums from 1989-1991. Ray Gillen died of an AIDS related illness in 1993.
@@Ifoughtpiranhas Ray sang on more than just "a few tracks". He sang on the entire Eternal Idol album (except for Scarlet Pimpernel, which is instrumental and wouldn't have his vocals on it anyway). Some songs I prefer with Ray, and others with Tony Martin. Regardless the dude was the most underrated singer of the 80s. Gone way way way too soon.
Mi favorite album is .Heaven and hell. Every single song is 🔥 and Dehumanizer. Sins of the father..buried alive..computerized god..i....letters from earth..time machine etc.. etc...
Ya, while that album is far from among their best, there's still some great songs on it ! Nothing against Dio, he was brilliant with Rainbow but i prefer Ozzy-era albums over Dio-era by a mile.
I wasn’t a huge fan of Sabbath until Heaven and Hell. To my metal listening ears in high school, I’d never heard a more perfect voice than Ronnie James Dio (rip brother). I couldn’t get enough Dio after that. I’ll say that I did eventually fall in love with the original Sabbath as the years wore on. Master of Reality is a masterpiece and my favorite from the Ozzy years. Born Again is criminally underrated.
My favorite is Master of Reality. I really like Born Again but the cover really turns me off. Heaven and Hell is priceless. One of my favorite songs comes from Iommi/Gillan called Holy Water from the Album Who Cares. Any Sabbath is Great. Great list Pete.
Good list! I recently decided to expand my Black Sabbath horizons from the classics (incl. Tony Martin classics like Headless Cross and Tyr) to see if I like some of their less-liked albums, and I found Born Again to be MUCH better than I expected. I'm glad this ranking has it placed pretty high up!
You could argue, that the Heaven & Hell 'The Devil You Know' release is in fact a Black Sabbath album in disguise, and to me actually a much stronger release than '13'.. 🤗
@Claus Byrial Nielsen It is a Black Sabbath album. The members themselves said so. They were forced to go under the name Heaven and Hell because Ozzy, Sharon and all their lawyers were bitching up a storm so they had to change the name to something different. As an added bonus, calling it Heaven and Hell allowed them to better focus on the Dio era only, rather than having to play Ozzy songs too.
@@metalwarrior81 I took it the other way and i consider MOB RULES to be an album by the *HEAVEN & HELL band.* To me it just makes more sense to split up the bands.
@@misterknightowlandco Because H & H should be recognized as their own band. I like Headless Cross a lot but it sounds NOTHING like Black Sabbath. So if u scroll through and see my ranked comment i consider the tony martin era the HEADLESS CROSS band. Dio era H&H. Plus if HEADLESS CROSS was their name those albums Probably wouldnt be out of Print. Iommi himself has said both BORN AGAIN & Seventh Star weren't supposed to be B.S. albums. It gives the band their own identity. I saw H & H Devil you know tours and i loved it. So glad they didnt play Ozzy stuff. Just like when i see Ozzy fronting i dont wanna hear Dio stuff. And Tony should play his stuff. It's just better in everyway. I still think the tony martin era would've been more successful if it was HEADLESS CROSS band. People see Sabbath, expect Sabbath then complain it sounds NOTHING like paranoid. A violation of expectations always angers people. So anyway i renamed the albums in my digital library and i very much prefer it this way. H & H especially should be recognized as their own band with their own legacy of 4 great albums.
Born Again is my favorite. Born Again and Keep It Warm my favorite tracks. The lyrics and vocals on Born again are amazing. It was a really dark time in my life and this album had a profound effect on me. It was 1984, I was 14 and just got out of juvenile detention and my mother bought me the cassette from Kmart on the way home, lol.
Your channel kicks ass! I love your take on music and tend to agree majorly. We're probably close in age and are lucky to grow up listening to the greatest music ever recorded. I'll be 60 on June 5th.
Vol 4 was always my favorite from Sabbath so many riffs and solos and I forgot about sabbath bloody sabbath and how good it is Never say Die in my opinion you Pete underrated it
I'll weigh in with a top twelve Sabbath for me: 1 Sabotage 2 Master of Reality 3 Born Again 4 Heaven and Hell 5 Sabbath, Bloody, Sabbath 6 Paranoid 7 Mob Rules 8 Black Sabbath 9 Volume 4 10 Dehumanizer 11 Headless Cross 12 Technical Ecstasy

He fell off HARD. By the time Born Again was released, he was pretty much toast. He is actively horrendous these days (saw him with Deep Purple last year).
I wouldn’t say “he wasn’t right for Sabbath” because the Born Again album is one of their best, I think it was more that his dream was to reform DP, and when that actually happened we ended up blessed with Perfect Strangers

I'm shocked he ranked it as low as he did, but as he stated when you get up to those last few albums it's so neck and neck. Mob Rules is definitely my favorite of the Dio-era.
I love Black Sabbath and I love this channel. I don't know why but Never Say Die! has always resonated with me, it's my #1 Sabbath album of all time, it's not even close. Cheers to all! 1. Never Say Die! 2. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath 3. Heaven And Hell 4. Sabotage 5. Volume IV 6. Master of Reality 7. Black Sabbath 8. Mob Rules 9. Technical Ecstasy 10. Paranoid 11. Cross Purposes 12. I remember staring at that album cover for weeks before I bought it. When I finally put it on the turntable I found the sound to be perfectly representative of the album cover art work.
I just love the Tony Martin era of Sabbath, The Headless cross gif at Sheffield city hall was spine tingling , Born again is a great album, love Sabbath🤘🤘
1. Vol. 4 2. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath 3. Heaven and Hell Pretty close to yours! Interesting take on Born Again - I never managed to like it. As for Tony Martin, I actually find Cross Purposes to be his finest hour. Music hits all of us differently - it's pure woodoo.
Don’t know each record, but here’s a ranking of the ones I do know: 11. Technical Ecstasy 10. Eternal Idol 9. Dehumanizer 8. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath 7. Paranoid 6. Black Sabbath 5. Mob Rules 4. Sabotage 3. Heaven and Hell 2. Master of Reality 1. Vol. 4 Could change at any time, as I used to have Sabbath Bloody Sabbath at #1

Gillan sounds like he's possessed or something on that one. Still have the shivers up my spine whenever I hear that song, and I've been listening to that album for about 20 years now.
Thanks Pete! I never bought a Sabbath album. But, my best friend, who has passed on, was a huge Sabbath fan. So....this was like listening to Gary talk about his favourite band. Not in a creepy way, but in a nice familiar way. Glad to see that Born Again ranked so high. We loved listening to this album. Trashed and Zero the Hero were favourites. I remember reading the review when they played Toronto. Encoring with Smoke on the Water must have been epic! Hope you saw that in Cleveland (I believe you live in Cleveland). Thanks again! These days, when we are basically concert less, large and small, it's great to hear good talk about music. Stay safe!
Walking to Jr. High each day in Brookhaven, PA. in 1976? ....a kid I went to school with turned Volune 4 up to 10 and I remember hearing it blasting the block! 5 minutes later I arrived on school grounds playing tackle football any smiling weed before homeroom. I tell kids today about it and their expression is priceless. Ah, growing up in the 70's. The movie "Dazed and confused captures those days accurately.
