I was 5 years old when I first heard it in 1970!! By 1973, when I was 8 I was listening to A. Cooper, Deep Purple, Steppenwolf, Grand Funk, J. Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Zepplin, J. Croce........in Huntington Beach CA. My mom opened my door and said she wasn't sure if I should be listening to "goddamn the pusher man" and "witches at black masses" at 7 years old! Thank you Mom for understanding.....
I'll never forget the day my dad bought me Paranoid, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, and Black Sabbath. I was only 14 and he told me that if liked metal then I need to hear these albums because this is where it all started. Those albums changed my life and for almost an entire year Ozzy sang me to sleep.
It's crazy how in 1 album...Basically every track gives birth to a subgenre of metal...stoner, doom, thrash, death..etc I've listened to this version so much, I mix up the lyrics in my head with the more common one...I'm GenX so was introduced to Sabbath by "the cool uncle"
Thrash? Death? Nah closest to thrash was children of the grave & and that still sounds like doom. Symptom of the universe though might be that but then again people already made speed/thrash like music in 74-75 already
Crazy thing is black sabbath was not devil music, for example"into the void" if you pay very close attention to lyrics of that song it paints a very vivid picture of the end..if ya know what I mean

Not to complain but..... the line "I guess it's the same" sounds a little forced to me... he seems to be stretching the word "same" to fit the flow.... I don't think there's enough syllables in that line.... I think if he had just added the word "just", as in " I guess it's just the same" I think it would have flowed better. whereas the final version "war pigs" is perfect in every way. Just my opinion. Definitely an awesome version of what "could have been" for sure!
It's interesting how Ozzy is blending (or maybe just confusing?) the lyrics of Walpurgis with the ones from War Pigs while they were playing at the well known live in Paris in 1970.
This is the first version I ever heard. I heard the made for public version and I thought this is definitely the wrong song. I told people about this version and they said it never existed. Thx for proving me right :)
Scott Waters The Album Was supposed To Be Called War Pigs And This Version Of The Song At The Time The Government Wouldn't Allow To Be Release. This Album Should Be Called War Pigs Not Paranoid But I Am Glad Their Is 2 Versions To This Song, I Love This Version More But That's Just My Opinion.
When I was about 10 or 11 years old in 2006 a friend of mine had an older brother that took us to the mall and bought us a couple CDs. I don’t remember all of them but amongst them was Reign in Blood, The Black Album, and The Ozzman Cometh. This version of War Pigs was track 2 I believe on the Ozzy album and it absolutely blew me away, I had never heard anything sound so dark before in my life. I ended up losing the CD and downloaded Paranoid at a later date, and always wondered why War Pigs just wasn’t the same as when I first heard it as a kid. Finding this version again is like going back home for me, definitely what birthed me into the world of metal.
The more known version is more poetic and i love it. However both versions follow the apocalypse and the ending of evil at Gods judgment and it is a profound Christian revelation. Gotta love it and no doubt an unsurpassed guitar and overall metal performance, masterpiece!!!!!!!

My mom gave me Paranoia as a gift cause I was into stuff like Lamb of God and Devildriver. She said "these guys started it all" it wasn't hitting my 1st listen but after listening again and again I fell in love the album. While everyone was listening to the new Slipknot or Whatever. I was jamming Sabbath in my CD on my way to school.
In '71 (I was 14) a friend pulled out Master of Reality. He also had the poster on the wall. Only time I've ever seen it. In 2/77 they finally came to Nashville. Opening band was Van Halen. It was a good night.
This would have never got off the ground in the U.S. the anti War version War Pigs hit the spot at the right time, the conclusion of the Vietnam war. This came out in 70 they stopped the war 73, really 72, Jan 73 so it was wrapped up in 72 really. This song hit the scene at the right time with the right vibe. This was the first song I hear that wasn't on AM pop rock radio and I went out got a job at 14, bought a stereo and this record. Black Sabbath was my first "Band" and is my favorite band to this day. Ritchie Blackmore got my attention as well.
Love this. The original is better but I love the opening lyrics in this one. “Witches gather at black masses. Bodies burning in red ashes.” Damn that’s good!
This isn't just alternate lyrics. It's "Walpurgis", and it's about ONLY a Satanic ritual, not likening that to the horrors of war like "War Pigs". Paranoid was supposed to be called Walpurgis or War Pigs.
Actually you're wrong, Walpurgis was the original name, but the record company thought the name was too satanic so it was changed to War Pigs. It was never the alternate title to Paranoid, ever.
Is it fuck! This is terrible compared to the album lyrics. It's no wonder they changed them, they knew they sucked! The recording is worse and the playing is worse. There's literally NOTHING about this version that's superior to the album version.
Black Sabbath, created the heaviest music in 1970, they are the true god fathers of Heavy type of music, Feb 13 1970 their Masterpiece first album came out. was mind blowing then, to day remains a Masterpiece, all hail the mighty Black Sabbath.

She was both a staunch Christian, and a staunch conservative -and a country music fan. But for her, as for me as well, those views were opposed to war. Yet mankind insists on creating wars. And i am old enough now, to form the opinion, war never proves anything. War never really solves a problem -yes it might stamp it down for a while, but it doesn't solve it. What exactly are we sending young people out to fight and die for? That is a grave responsibility that is taken far too lightly.
They sang these lyrics on a San Diego live CD that came out when the Reunion discs came out. It's a light blue cover which is VERY strange for Sabbath.
Heard this in the car and in my opinion way better then the actual released version. This along with a original sounding version of Black Sabbath. They were on one of my dads best of Ozzy cds.
My dad owned a copy of The Ozzman Cometh album with Ozzy's greatest hits. Guess what happened to be the first two tracks on that album that 10 year old me happened to love to this very day? The original 69 demo of Black Sabbath (w/ the unused third verse) and the 69 demo of War Pigs (previously called Walpurgis).
When my dad was in the army he said him and his buddies would blast this (the final studio version) over the pa before they had to report to their stations because it had the air raid siren

Holy Hell , Not the lyrics we heard as kids in 1970 , however growing up watching Monster & Horror films as a 7 year old in 63 i still think these lyrics would have given most of us nightmares. Man these lyrics are as Black as Sabbath got. Even for bands like Slayer who these come naturally, in 69 & 1970 they most assuredly did not. Freakin' Black Sabbath's great & this version is still scary as hell. Love it !!!
In one of the pictures of all four members 3/4 of the way through the video Ozzy is wearing a blizzard of Oz t shirt. Was that something that he came up with with Sabbath before going solo? Or is that a later line up. I'm glad they changed the lyrics. It doesn't flow, I wouldn't have liked it . There's a reason why demos are demos. To each their own. I still remember the first day my friend played me this album back on the early 80's . A cold,gloomy winter day,walking the streets with a boom box smoking cigarettes. It was perfect. I found my musical niche. Was born a decade too late,lol. Thanks for posting this video.

Interesting demo. Almost sounds like War Pigs, just without the sirens at the beginning. What I mean to say is that it sounds like the version actually recorded for the Paranoid album, but they changed the lyrics at the very last minute. Also the ending isn't speeded up as on the finalized version.
This is the first version I ever heard. It was on a special edition of The Ozzman Cometh I believe, along with a demo of Black Sabbath. I heard both of those versions first since my mom had that CD. I love the lyrics of this one so much.
You can pinpoint Sabbath as the beginning of Heavy Metal in '70, or you could go to Judas Priest's second album in '76. You could even start in '79 with the NWOBHM movement with bands like Angelwitch, Saxon, and Iron Maiden. That was the first time there were a group of bands all at once being called Heavy Metal, and often actively referring to themselves as Heavy Metal. That's the latest you can go. You can't keep moving measurement with a current outlook, otherwise you've got guys not considering anything with clean vocals to be metal and all of the sudden, Maiden and Dio are soft rock. All of those points in the 70s are arguable, but ultimately it becomes a semantic argument at some point, because Heavy Metal, like any other genre of music, wasn't invented and patented at an exact date. It's an evolution which you can retroactively trace back roots to Blue Cheer, Cream, Led Zeppelin, Gun, and even further all the way back to the Blues and Classical Music. I think 1970 is as good of a point as any. You've got a debut album from a young band that had several of the elements of what would be known as heavy metal and a dramatic shift from older bands all at once: The band's name, lyrics, album cover art, mood, methods (down-tuning, tri-tones, banshee vocals, riff heavy), and image (they all wore big cross necklaces in contrast to flowers and beads). Not the first time any of these elements were used, but the first time they came together like this. Also, this is the earliest band that later heavy metal bands would almost universally name as an inspiration.
Eric Smith, I agree with everything you've said. I think anyone would agree 1970 was the year Heavy Metal was truly pioneered. I mean apart from Sabbath's first two albums, you had Deep Purple's In Rock, Sir Lord Baltimore's debut, Uriah Heep's debut and Lucifer's Friend's debut to make it even more truer!
Epic share! Didn't knew it existed! And although I prefer the classic version we all love - this one isn't that bad either! And apart from the lyrics, the melody changed a bit also. For example before the first chorus (don't know the exact second) Iommi does a couple of guitar shreds that aren't in the final version of the track. Thanks for posting this! And the lyrics on screen helped a lot because I for one was always expecting to hear the lyrics I already know by heart :))
@Shallex The tempo sounds better, I like the grittier unclean guitars and the lyrical flow seem to fit more since these are the original lyrics they would have gone with if they weren't told to tone it down.
There were lot of controversy and people calling them satanists after their first record. I think thats why they decided to alter the lyrics to avoid more controversy this time
The reason they changed them is because they SUCK. They don't scan, they don't rhyme, they're infantile, they're pulled out of their arse, basically, and they knew it! The album lyrics are FAR superior in every way possible!
