My Mom was a young girl living in London when the war began. She was evacuated to live with strangers in the countryside which she hated, but returned after a while. As a lad I played with toy soldiers and tanks and aircraft and loved watching films about WWII, and one day something must have touched a nerve because she told me how completely terrifying it all was. Walking through London and hearing the sirens wailing, the sound of bombs, how she was given a gas mask, how one day the back of her house was blown in, how V1 missiles would drone overhead before suddenly going silent then exploding moments later. The fear never really left her.

Because, you know, your average school desk will shield you from a bomb blast LOL

An important context for the Air Raid Sirens sounds at the beginning is that they were an ominous warning of impending horror. These were the signal to gather your family and try to get to relative safety before the bombing began. The true horror had passed by the time I was young but the sirens still sounded once a month and we hid under our desks as part of the drill when the sirens sounded.

These guys basically created the Heavy Metal genre. Some other people influenced it but these guys were the first Metal as far as I am concerned.

Serious, SERIOUS jam here. One of the all-time greats man. Bill Ward is the drummer, and, along with John Bonham from Zeppelin, is one of the greatest "power drummers" ever. Some of their songs had a very prominent drum beat in them, and it's just FIRE!!

You commented on the difference in Ozzy's voice between this song and the live version of "Paranoid" you reacted to. The difference has got to be in the "liveness" of the "Paranoid" performance, versus a studio recording, rather than in any maturing of Ozzy's voice. The live version of "Paranoid" you watched was from 1970; the same year the album "paranoid" was released. "War Pigs" was on that same album.

Fun Fact: Tony Iommi the lead guitar player lost some of his finger tips on his fret hand in an accident at his factory job. So to be able to play guitar he made special pads that he wears to allow him to play guitar. It's part of how they developed such a unique sound.

I'm old, like in my 60s. You couldn't just get any music you wanted. I grew up in a tiny town in Missouri. You had to KNOW someone that would let you hear this on their stereo. This guy had to get to Kansas City 200 miles away with no car. This is the guy who brought this into a very select circle. We met at his old farmhouse, he put the renegade record on his pioneer sound system, and the biggest high in the world is hearing bootleg outlawed music on a rocking sound system, and being so special you were invited.

Air Raid Sirens- used extensively during the bombardment of Germany over London. It's also used in the US. You think his voice is more mature in War Pigs than Paranoid? Strange, they were written and recorded the same year 1970. The video was produced years after the song, it is an official video btw.

The members of the band were born in post war England. It influenced their lives in many ways. Birmingham was an especially dreary place in post war Britain. So that coupled with the Vietnam War which was raging at the time is the basis for the lyrics. And I’m sure you also noticed the grooves in the bass and drum parts. The UK had a huge love for Soul and R n B in the early sixties and it definitely had an influence on the rock bands that came up in the late 60’s and early 70’s. The Who, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath all had some funky hints in their early albums especially.

This was pretty much the world's introduction to heavy metal, a genre that didn't exist before this. Many minds were blown away to be sure. Also, the song lyrics have many biblical references, and that cadence you referred to is that of a preacher. This most certainly is a sermon.

The air sirens at the beginning of the song used to warn the public to run for cover. In this country the last Friday of each month they would test them for about 10 minutes or so. Us students would duck for cover under our desks - like that would help during a nuclear attack. A great song that is fun to play on the electric guitar.
