What a voice. Next to Paul Rodgers and Steve Marriott, Lou Gramm is in the top 3 rock vocalists for me.

A fantastic album!!! Lou Gramm had a great potential from the beginning of his career, the guitar player played some really fine blues/rock solos, the other instruments are also played very well, this album reminds me of Free from Paul Rodgers era, Black Sheep was a short lived rock band but they managed to open for the mighty KISS!!! thanks for sharing the album.

Just told my teenager that Lou used to go by his full name, had a band called the Black Sheep used to play at my high school dances in Rochester. She can’t believe it. I love how kids now have such a love for 70’s rock because it was the best!

@@Laura-jb6wi I believe so. Couldn't say for sure though. My uncle hung out with them back then and he attended Jefferson. I think I read that Lou went to Gates-Chili though. I imagine they played all over as I heard they practiced at a local church in Rochester as well. Just cool to hear the old stories 🙂

Great album great lineup and with all of his problems Lou Gramm still one of best soulful singers ever even tho retiring I would not waste my money to see Foreigner now and this album has the quality and the bluezy sound as his solo work in the 80s

Lou gave Black Sheep’s albums to Mick/Spooky Tooth at their concert in Rochester. When ST broke up, and Mick was having difficulty finding a singer for a band he was forming, he finally listened to them. The rest, as they say, is history.

As everyone can hear on this album, Lou didn't need Mick as much as Mick needed Lou and then, once Mick made it big, he trashed Lou and threw him away like a used tissue. Mick is not loyal nor does he have any integrity. He's never to be trusted.

Growing up in Western NY, these guys used to play the local bars before getting into the concert circuit...so before being able to get into bars, being under age we used to try hanging around outside the Caboose in Fredonia Ny to listen until the bouncers kicked us out for loitering....of course in those days we listened. Black sheep was the openning act for the first two concerts I ever attended Black Sabbath and Todd Rungrens Utopia (version 1) Great blues rock band!

I just started reading LOU's book. Great stories about early days and this band. I just had to check it out. They even opened for KISS! LOU had high hopes for them, and even turned MICK JONES down on the telephone for his first audition, he was THAT dedicated to BLACK SHEEP. The members talked him into going for the audition,,,which we now know is history that made FOREIGNER. Good rockin , bluesy LP with those LOU vocals. I dig it in 2019!

It's interesting how fate stepped in. Black Sheep was opening for Kiss and they lost all their gear in an ice storm. Black Sheep came to an abrupt halt. Lou gets a call from Mick Jones putting a new band together. Lou was a loyal dude and was reluctant to leave his band and audition with Mick Jones. Lou gets the gig and Foreigner is born!

Taking side one to 21:44 is really pushing the limits of the analog vinyl modulated spiral groove, that moves from the outside of a flat disk & finishes near the center. The piece of equipment that picks up the sound is a diamond needle, the hardest thing in nature, riding in a petroleum product. As the arm & needle moves thru the groove, it twists the needle from its starting position. This makes it more difficult to record more bass in the inner groove, without the needle jumping up. This is why most albums were limited to 18:00 by record companies.

Very Bad Company with a dash of Nazareth and Deep Purple. A good producer, who knew about musical theory, could have fixed a few of the problems with this album. There are some great hooks that are snuffed out by a bad structure. Pentatonic scale solos. Too narrow to be really interesting. There is not enough tension and dynamic resolution.
