Ordered a 20ft one up just recently. Going to be using it to present a marabou jig from shore in a reservoir in Colorado for brown trout, perch, and maybe even smaller lake trout since they are up shallow right now. Can't say I have ever seen anybody use one, but it seems like a great idea for a finesse presentation from shore. It would also be nice for fishing into the early winter since it doesn't have a reel and line guides to ice up and it gets well below freezing in the morning where I am. Not sure whether I will quickly find out why they are so rarely used, or if I will discover a really neat technique. Either way, seems like fun.
I think they have a place even today in fishing. My dad use to tell me stories of all the kids in his neighborhood use to make them out of bamboo and cotton line and I started using it myself. It’s the simplicity I like about it. My last video I am using it flipping gizzard Shad off the top of a dam and had a lot of fun with it! Let me know what you catch!
I had a 16ft Shakespeare Wonderpole and used it for years. It broke this spring and have not seen that brand offering this type of pole so I will look for the BnM pole. I have a couple of BnM bamboo poles the work fine for small fish but would not want to hook a larger fish as the bamboo pole break easy. Pole fishing is my favorite
So I was at Walmart about 4 months ago, they had two black widows on clearance at $4.98 each . I checked one out and thought it’s pretty cool, so I bought one just for farts and giggles, I hadn’t been cane pole fish’n since I was a kid , then I ran across a couple of videos with guys catching fish and thought this is going to be a self challenge! What’s the biggest dang fish that I can haul in in with this pole ! I’m not fond of the line holders the edges are sharp, so I’m going to reconstruct them , I’m in west central Florida so my challenge is going to be saltwater fishing, I just caught an 18” black drum and 3 sheep head this afternoon on my spinning rod , and when I got home I realized that those fish I caught were cane pole distance away from shore, you can guess were I’m going to be tomorrow ! 🐟👍🏼
I’ve had tons of people look at my sideways when I pull out a cane pole, until I catch fish. The real challenge are bigger species. I’ve tried to catch some carp with it but the braid was too light. I now have 60 lb braid and would love to experiment more with the black widow. If you adapt the line hold with success let me know if it works. Let me know if you catch that drum or those sheep heads!
I see this rod used often from the jetty for a vertical presentation and they are catching nice sized sheepshead on them. I want one after watching them fished
@@thefishingpole5602 , I just came across your reply , and forgot to get back with ya, I did try the black widow out and found that it was easier to put my bait next to the dock pillars and there wasn’t as much splash , it didn’t spook the fish as much , I had caught six or seven smaller sheepshead using mangrove crabs as bait , then it was like a mini torpedo came from under the dock grabbed the bait and took off , I had 30lb braid on it and 4’ ft of 20 lb fluorocarbon , all I heard was ping 💥 whatever it was snapped the leader , since there wasn’t a reel on it to let it run I’ve since put a old single action fly reel on it with some backing ,but haven’t used the pole since the big getaway , but this spring it’s going back in action ! 👍
@@davescheer5038 Thanks for getting back to me! I’m further north than you in Delaware. I’ve tried to catch some big carp near my with the black widow but I wasn’t using the right line. I stepped up to 30lb braid but they weren’t biting and carp can be very finicky. I’ll let you know how I do. When it warms up I want to try some salt water near me for sea bass and tautog near a saltwater spot near me. I’ll let you know how I do and maybe put out a video or two!
Just enough for the length of the pole. If it’s 10 feet put 10 feet of line. If you are just starting out and you put a longer amount of line on it becomes unmanageable. I now put on braid with a monofilament leader. Let me know how it going for you!
