Some of these "donations" are from people who are tricked into thinking they're making an offering to their gods and will receive more blessings for giving up their hair but it's just a tactic for the sellers to get their hair and sell it without compensating the source from which it came.
@tauriandeveaux4457
@tauriandeveaux4457 Год назад
They're well aware that the hair is going somewhere. When they sacrifice their hair they do it for religious reasons and generally don't care where it goes. However the fact that it sacrificed in the name of what most black American women would consider to be an idol is reason enough why we should not buy such products

Chris Rock covered this in his documentary called “Good Hair”. Originally, and quite possibly still, the hair comes from rituals, or more specifically tonsuring ceremonies, where those who practice Hinduism give their hair to the gods they worship as a rite of passage. Ladies, there is energy attached to this hair. After all, it is someone’s DNA.

There are multitude of reasons I believe black women should stop wearing weaves, wigs & extentions, especially straight, virgin hair. We have given people who hate us & only see us as a cash cow _millions_ of dollars. We have put these people's hair on our head, hair that looks nothing like ours, & simultaneously disrespected our beautiful natural hair. If many of you truly believed your hair was beautiful you would feel no need to put hair that looks nothing like yours on your head 365. And not to mention the poor women who are being exploited & lied to. Many of the sources for these bundles are unethical, & most women who purchase the hair are not doing the research to figure out who is ethical & who isn't & a lot frankly don't care as long as they can look like a baddie.

I do love my hair what has wearing hair extensions got to do with self hate. People like you is what makes being a black woman hard no matter what we choose to do with our hair. If a woman wants to flat iron, perm, weave, braid, extension, even wear it natural it’s our choice.
@MeganAllen1738

@@sheilakatz8377 yes it absolutely is your choice. Did I advocate to make it illegal? Your comment about "choice" is irrelevant to my point.

Agreed 100% with this statement! I actually had a really bad experience in a beauty shop but instead of telling the full story on RU-vid, I told another milder story since I didn't want to expose the business. It had to do with weaves, and it scarred me, I have never been more disrespected in my life. I do believe that if we encourage more black women to purchase good quality hair extensions (that can last 3-9 years) and to wear their natural hair out more often (no matter how they choose to style it, as long as it is healthy) it would significantly decrease the amount of money that black women pour into this industry. Most Orthodox Jewish women who buy wigs use the same wig for 4-5 years. If black women could replicate this action of buying one really good quality wig every 4-5 years, it would bring about a lot of change. Concerning hair extensions and "baddie culture": Hair extensions have become a status symbol, almost like a Birkin bag. It is a showcase of wealth and status, especially in modern day pop culture. I mentioned it in a video as well. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qkd9ci7ECNc.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zY_6AfTxNPo.html If we can redirect these messages that are being pushed heavily online towards young women, it would also make a major change as well. Thanks for commenting!😊

@@DynamicTouch if this isn't the truth. Like it's not even about wearing wigs, everyone wears wigs. But a lot of black women have an obsession & it needs to be addressed properly. We also should save all that money we spend on Asians & invest it into black businesses.

A man followed me for several blocks last week in Brooklyn, demanding I give him a cash price I'd be willing to sell my hair for. It's the second time it's happened to me this summer. I do have long straight hair that I've donated before but these wig makers shouldn't be chasing ppl on the street! If u go in these neighborhoods where wigs are worn for cultural/ religious reasons, I advise covering yr hair if it's long

Here in South Africa there was a whole trend of people stealing locs from people's heads. Even the news did a whole investigative episode on it. Like they would lure people through job interviews and cut their locs off, or even the hairstylist would sneak a few locs off your head and you'd realize this later, etc. I don't know of it's still a thing now since synthetic locs are the latest trend here. Edit: I actually wrote this before watching the video lol, that's the news episode😂

It’s because 9/10 when other women wear extensions it matches the hair that naturally grows out their scalp. A lot of the times when black women wear weave it is looser textured / straight and does not match the hair that naturally grows. So in comparison a lot of nonblack women go under the radar because they wear wigs and weaves that mimic their natural hairs.

I have “virgin hair”, I’ve been natural my whole life, and it’s currently down to my butt, but I’ve always had long hair. It’s gross thinking about wearing someone else’s hair, and it’s very scary thinking about the toxic chemicals like perms that others put in their hair. If I do any protective style, it’s with my own hair. When I was young, I was obsessed with long straight hair, so I began straightening it with a flat iron at a high heat setting with no heat protectant because at the time I wasn’t as educated about my hair as I am now. At this stage in my life I’ve embraced the natural texture of my hair and my now healthy hair has thanked me with how much longer it’s grown. Over the months I’ve added new things to my hair care routine, like oils, silk, scalp messager, wide tooth combs, detangling brushes, finger detangling, being gentle, natural hair products, etc. I’ve learned new terms like shrinkage, hair type/porosity, etc. It’s been a long and frustrating but rewarding journey.

white women and black women are the main consumers of the human hair industry. but the reason black women get more flack for it because they buy asian and latin American hair, and the donors from those countries are heavily exploited by individuals and larger companies. White women buy human hair from eastern Europe, and unlike the asians and latin Americans, they are appropriately compensated which is why European hair is more expensive than asian and latin american. The European hair trade is also a lot more regulated and ethics are followed that protect donors and individuals selling their hair.

I remember when the natural hair movement started on youtube I loved it. Women with highly textured hair were making videos and sharing hair care tips. It was awesome now it's been taken over once again motivated by greed and playing on women's self esteem. It went from natural hair to the wig and weave movement. I've never worn wigs and weaves if you put as much money time and care into your own hair like you do those weaves I promise you would learn to love it. I would see other naturals now it's either wigs weaves or braids to keep from dealing with their own hair. Please don't say other races of women wear them to I know that already. Who are they marketing to?? and those other races of women wear texture like their own hair most black women don't. Men always compliment me on my natural hair confidence and beauty go hand in hand. Many people are unaware of the hair industry from collection to retail. White women world wide consume a LOT of hair extensions, toppers, ponytails but at a considerably higher price point than black women. There are many black American women who have worked to try and sell authentically sourced hair but at a higher price point that most black women just don’t want to pay. To put the dark side of the hair industry on all black women is egregious and damaging. I don’t understand why black American women cant educate each other without shaming one another or all of us as a collective. My white friends & white hair clients would never do this to each other 😞

The truth however IS uncomfortable. Most BW who wear wigs etc do so much more often and routinely than other races, as well as wearing hair texture unlike their own. It's a squirmy truth no one wants to talk about. It's not perse to shame anyone but there's not really an upside to the industry at all. A consenting and well compensated individual would be the only acceptable way to do it, but since most people don't want to part with their hair, the poor are victims. It's like factory farming. No one wants animals to suffer but no one wants to pay for the cost of humane treatment and slaughter. All wig/extension wearing should be based on consenting and fair compensation as I said, but the intense demand and regular use by BW as the largest demographic really make that impossible. It's a sad reality that needs to be looked at and addressed.

And your video contradicted itself in so many ways I can’t even explain it in this one comment . First scalp issues are caused by not taking care of your hair in between installs, and yes you can wash the hair but after washing it should not cause any scalp issues so it’s clearly lack of hair care . second I like how we try to moralize the stealing of peoples offerings to their God because that was with the Indian people were doing most of the hair is being stolen let’s be honest it’s being stole off of people that’s why quality hair cost so much. And lastly I am really tired of the argument that white women wear extensions too yeah but not as long as we do ,and yes some people need hair weaves and wigs because of sickness and they want to feel feminine, but the extent that we go to avoid our hair is ridiculous but to each its own

That's true, and our hair is more attractive when it's something that grows out of our own scalps. I attract so many white and latino guys with my natural styles without even trying

Constructive criticism- I appreciate the explorative nature of this video and love there is a solutions portion, but sometimes it sounds like you’re yelling and it’s a bit jarring, especially if you have headphones. Think less “giving a speech/presentation in a classroom” and more “recording a podcast”. Because you have a mic, you don’t have the project your voice as much. Try to practice speaking as though we are having a conversation and sitting next to each other. I think the quality of the audio will go up if you make that change.

This is a fascinating topic! I researched this bc I'm a New Yorker & was approached twice on the street by men who offered me money for my hair. It's naturally blond, straight & hip length. I have no doubt that some women's hair gets stolen. This was in Brooklyn, & 1 of the men was so aggressive he followed me for several blocks, demanding I tell him a price. There's a big market for wigs in this area for cultural/ religious reasons & apparently they sell for many thousands of dollars depending on length & type of hair. I donated about 15" a few years ago but never thought about selling it. My advice if you have very long hair & are out in one of these areas, wear it up or covered. Stay safe all 💕🙏

This is why i limt tf outta how much human hair i buy at this point im just gonna find more ethical hair brands , the fact these capitalist make millions on these terrible quality hair wigs while not paying thier workers enough money nor the donors it disgust me , ive seen the insider vid on the human hair industry but this really ticked me over the edge . Im an atheist but the idea of religious people cutting ther hair for sacrifice and these disgusting capitalist basically steal it pay the temple (not even the women themseves) pennies of what the hair will be sold as then pay their basically sweatshop labor hair workers absolutely nothing while racking in copious amounts of money . Im done with this bs .

Imagine if we started wearing human nails as nail extensions? I think about it sometimes, getting a human hair wig or extensions, i think as a child of God I'm not scared of anything to do with spirits or other gods. But I'm still not ok with it for myself, I'll gross myself out because I'm a critical thinker and extreme analyser , when i start thinking about things like getting "human nail" extensions. Thinking about how there are people gathering hair from salon floors snd salon bins, robbing graves and so on... Ethics and disgust will get the best of me and then I'll toss money away in some kind of awakening... Before i get to that point of eventually what is a waste of my money... I'm sticking to synthetics and yarn ( i swear.. It's like I'm allergic to those anyway hence why i was thinking of human hair)... And just my hair.

If the rich and famous are making up for the one percent of this good hair then they are getting good quality then they are not purchasing a lot of times in a year. So yes black women we are the largest consumers of this hair because as you said we get poor quality hence it will keep us coming back. Otherwise afro types of wigs would be flying of cosmetic shops not latina and Asian hair that is synonymous to what black women are known to purchase. So let us be accountable and accept the fact even though other races are doing so it's not as much as black women that is indeed our desire of other women's types of hair is contributing largely to this industry to grow. Hence they are flooded in black saloons🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️

I’m only a few minutes into the video and maybe I should watch it fully before commenting but this topic as a whole doesn’t sit right with me. I feel like BW are responsible for all things then touch and enjoy. 1.) as a BW with thick coarse hair, I do not have to wear straight extensions but I do bc I don’t want to perm my hair and it simply takes less time to style. I’m an active, corporate woman. Planning my weekends around styling is not fun. It has nothing to do with self hate. 2.) this topic reminds me of the fast fashion conversation… the end consumer gets the blame but not the corporation. Again, I may be commenting too early but I’m over the policing of the how black women should wear their hair, where they buy it from, etc. bc are we having these conversations with other races? Are we having these conversations to women in general about the makeup full of chemicals and skin care full of cancer causing agents? If we don’t want to talk about the beauty industry and societal standards at large, let’s stop having this very much conversation that often singles out BW.
@kimsandy7869

So basically we should stop talking about unethical hair practices because we're "policing how black women should wear their hair", no one is talking about fast fashion or the beauty industry and societal standards oh! and you want to defend your reasons for wearing straight wigs too

Black women just stop wearing the damn hair. I'm a black woman you are who you are but when you see my beautiful women day in Day Out with hair that doesn't belong to them it's sometimes can be overwhelming we were always told that we weren't beautiful enough we need to get rid of that mindset and love us starting with our hair I'm a black woman with blue eyes my hair is nappy as hell and I love it my eyes is not what attracts men believe it or not it's my hair especially when I wear it out in the afro. And don't get me wrong sometimes I straighten my hair I don't like it but I do our hair is precious jewels and we need to embrace it more. I try wearing that in my hair about 4 years ago to a party I tell you no lie when I walked into this party every black woman I'm going to say out of 50 women 45 of them had weave in their hair including me I was so uncomfortable
